I miss Melissa Etheridge. Every time one of her CDs came out, I devoured it. Poured over every single syllable of every single word she sang. Her lyrics told a story, drew you into her world and made you see your own. Her lyrics inspired me as a poet, as a writer, as a person. There's something about Sugarland's lyrics on the new CD that remind me of Melissa. They're quite heartfelt and tell a story with each song. So I'm on a lyric kick... and I guess a Sugarland kick... This song is called Wishing and I can think of a few people in my neighborhood that could relate to this lyrics right now. There are few stellar lines that make me envious... Enjoy!

I've been wanting to use that expression and it's perfectly fitting to describe yet another year of band camp. It started this week. I know I'm not in the band myself, but my daughter is and this is her final year and I want to be as involved as possible. It's rough on me because I have to do so much driving back and forth but it's so worth it! Since I want Hailey get as much possible driving time with me in the car (as opposed to just riding with a friend) I take her and pick her up, over and over and over during band camp! All the while going back to work in the interim! It's crazy! I'm very fortunate that my boss is willing to work with me during this very important time of year.

This week:

Tuesday through Thursday, music camp in the band room 9am-12pm. This is when the instrumentalists start working on their songs for the show. There's always a huge learning curve because of an incoming batch of inexperienced freshmen. Even though the middle school band puts out some impressive musicians it takes them a while to adjust to the demands of the high school band, which are very different.

Tuesday and Thursday, marching practice, on the band field from 6pm-8:30pm. This is when they teach the Freshmen how to march and they don't even play their instruments at this early stage of marching. Tuesday was rained out, Wednesday they do not practice because it's church night. Last night was their first marching practice. Hailey was beaming with pride after her first time being a section leader. She has a whole group of newbies that she has to teach to march. I think this is going to be a great year!

I also, finally found out what their songs are going to be. This is going to be a knockout show! All patriotic songs. Here are three of them and I know that Mr. Pence will have some awesome arrangements cuz that man has got connections!

Next week will be the real killer!

Monday - Thursday either on the field or in the band room, 8-11, 2-4, 6-8 (except for Wednesday, no 6-8 because of church).

Once school starts on August 9th they will have their regular rehearsals Tuesday - Thursday after school.

They have a lot to learn and not much time to learn it because the president of the Tournament of Roses Parade will be here on August 21st and the band will do a special stadium performance just for him. The band is then performing their show during a local college's halftime on August 28th and our first football game is August 29th! Whew! It's going to be crazy but I'm getting really excited! Can't wait to get out there with my camera!

Thanks to Last.fm, I've become aware once again of the band Goldfrapp and have been listening to them as often as possible. To suddenly be presented at once with four new albums worth of listening material is awesome. My first exposure to them had been by a free download through iTunes from the Black Cherry disc, but for some unknown reason, I never explored any of their other material at that time. Now all of that has changed. I can not get enough of Alison's voice.

I usually listen to a few songs on repeat a lot during any given week...So here are my favorites of this week. These are my good July songs.

Angeles, by Elliott Smith, I must have listened to at least 20 times while driving/riding in the car with my Dad from Dallas to Los Angeles, relaxing, and staring at my feet in a pink blanket up on the dashboard. It also accompanied the saddest story I've heard in my life, which I heard a mere few weeks ago.

The Tempest, by Pendulum, is off of their new album, In Silico. It's an awesome driving song, and just a good thinking song. I think it's the least "in your face" of the entire album, and I LOVE the rest of the album, but there's something about this one that gets me.

I got this Beck song from an LJ community, and I liked it. It's called Walls.

Cyberbird by Yoko Kanno is off of the GITS soundtrack, and I have to say, I love this song so much. It's probably my favorite of the four at the moment(at the moment, yall, at the moment!). It's so haunting, it makes me think of forbidden love and rain and such things. It's wonderful.

I always enjoy telling myself that I'm starting a new "segment" on my blog, so let's go ahead and say this can be a new segment--knowing I will probably never make another post like this again.

Final Fantasy VIII--FFVIII, for us cool kids--came out shortly after I'd gotten my Playstation and fallen in love with Final Fantasy VII. FF7 I loved, but 8... 8 was something else for me. It remains probably my favorite game of all time (perhaps even trumping the classic NES, Sega, and SNES games I love so much!), and although my gaming days are mostly over, I still can't think of FF8 without getting all squishy inside. (For you other gamers, I know, I know--FF7 is apparently infinitely better, but I can't help it. Nothing ever moved me the way 8 did.) My most memorable moment of the game is the scene I'm about to post. Now YouTube has made it convenient for me to watch whenever I want; back in the Day, however, I reserved a precious memory card spot for this video alone so I could watch it whenever I wanted. (And I'll never forget the nice/nerdily cute guy who worked at Electronics Boutique who confessed he had done the same thing.) Aside from the fact that this was just gorgeous animation (especially at the time; I think it still is), I love love loved the music, and the music of Nobuo Uematsu continues to remain that nagging inspiration in me: "Don't score films; score games!" Mmmph.

This morning I was walking around and singing one of my favourite road trip songs, "Good Life" by Inner City. I love this song! I haven't heard it in awhile so I google'd the lyrics and sang it in every room of the house. The kitchen, by the way, has awesome acoustics for this tune.

Then I went to a career website and there was a banner at the top: Good Life.

I clicked on a link at another site and went to the WWF, which is the World Wildlife Fund and not the other thing you are thinking of, and that site had a big graphic header that said... yup. Good Life.

So I'm either online way too much... or the universe is sending me a signal: it's all good, ya dummy.
