I've been tagging my Dad's mp3s for days. -_- For days, meaning, it's a LOT of mp3s. I'm getting tired of it, so I should resume tagging some other time especially those assorted ones (not in albums, if you know what I mean.) I've been thinking of what to do next. There's a lot, but I should list down what I should finish first. Hmm...

you can look at pictures and remember things from way back when. but there's something about hearing (and possibly getting up and grooving) to a song. songs can transport you back to certain places and times the way pictures can't. yes, a picture is worth 1000 words... but a song is worth a whole boatload of sensory flashbacks!

I always thought Live's album Secret Samadhi got a bit of a bum rap. After Mental Jewelery and the radio play of chart-toppers from Throwing Copper, I know a lot of folks that felt very let-down by Samadhi (although not as much as by Bush's Razorblade Suitcase after their hit Sixteen Stone). But if you give it a chance, there are actually some really interesting/catchy songs on the album. Here's one of my favorites...

Wouldn't life be so much better if the work week was only 4 days? Tomorrow would be Friday.

Before I forget...Dr. Horrible premiered Part 1 yesterday. Most of the day the site wouldn't load for me but finally saw it yesterday (and then couldn't get it to load again) Hopefully...'everybody has seen it' and I can grab another look later...

Been slowly catching up with Mad Men...and found the whole first season is available on both AMC On Demand and HD On Demand. Good stuff. Speaking of good stuff....so was the season premiere of The Closer. Brenda Lee Johnson rocks!

Finished up I Thought There'd Be Cake by Sloane somethingorother. Some funny stories. Its back to mystery/action with The Cleaner by Brett Battles...

Heading to Rocky Mount to hang with the family for a little while next Friday. Birthdays for the maternal one and one of the nieces. Should be fun.

Heard last night that Chuck Berry will play Raleigh Wide Open at the beginning of September...alog with Soul Asylum, Arressted Development, the Annuals and others...and again..the price is right...FREE.

OH..and cranky...Didn't know you were a publisher!?! ;) Saw this in the latest issue of BookPage (picked up last weekend at the library) Its the first sentence in an article titled "Author tips from a broadcasting pro"

The last few weeks have seen me on a major iTunes-reorganizing kick, segregating and categorizing and shuffling files around for hours at a time. I’ve now got playlists buried down even to a fourth level of folders and thank god at least I know where they are because once finished they’d never see the light of day otherwise. My total iTunes library is something like 54 gigs and 9000 songs – there should be more songs at that gig count, but I have a thing for really long trance-like dance and groove world pieces (see: Transglobal Underground, Nation Records, DJ Cheb I Sabbah etc.) – which is why I’m nowhere near the end of the project after several weeks. It beats looking for a new job, I’ll say that much.

Putting music into categories helps me realize how deficient my collection is in most areas that aren’t world-groove, classic punk or modern indie pop. To that end I’m currently ransacking the Austin Public Library for the folk-rock or just plain radio-rock I grew up with. Already I’ve added Simon & Garfunkel’s Sounds of Silence and Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Joni Mitchell’s Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira, Steely Dan’s Countdown to Ecstasy, the Zep's Physical Graffiti (which I somehow got to 48 without once hearing all the way through), Tull's Stand Up and Benefit, Warren Zevon’s Excitable Boy, the Floyd's Wish You Were Here, and Elton John’s Honky Chateau and Tumbleweed Connection, with more to come as I can find 'em and get the holds available. The APL only lets you put 10 items at a time on hold – can you believe it?

Also: the Ramones’ first album. Because I can’t believe I ever let that bugger go.

Yet there are still glaring omissions, big honking gaps you can drive a flower-painted microbus through. I’m not sure how it happened that my collection includes absolutely no:

Hendrix
Dylan
Moody Blues (staple of my middle-school years)
Allman Brothers (ditto)
Grateful Dead (OK, I've got a few select tracks from Deadicated, and the Dead generally made shitty studio albums anyway, but still. I thought enough of them to see them play live something like five times, y'know)
Clapton (although: fuck Cream [except Disraeli Gears and maybe Goodbye], fuck Blind Faith, fuck Derek and the Dominoes [yes, I know that includes Duane Allman], and fuck Clapton's whole spineless mumbling solo career. The guy is massively overrated)

just to name a few. Give it time and the grace of the APL, I guess.

Slightly more bothersome are all the bands that had one or three moderate-size hits on Philadelphia radio in the years right before New Wave that nobody but me and the DJ will remember. Detective, featuring Michael Des Barres and Tony Kaye (“Grim Reaper,” “Recognition”). Charlie (“No Second Chance,” “Watching TV,” “Johnny Hold Back” – from England, weren’t they?). Racing Cars (“Downtown Tonight”), Skyhooks (“Crazy Heart”), Sad Café (“Run Home Girl”), Metro (“Black Laced Shoulder”), Backstreet Crawler ("Stone Cold Sober"). Bands that barely had a chance on the radio then but would have none at all in this ultra-tight formatted era.

Except maybe Detective, since Jimmy Page produced both their albums. They always got a little extra push on the Philly 'waves. One long-ago day I remember a WMMR jock concluding a spin of “Grim Reaper” in all its slashing-opener-riff glory with, “Man. That just sounded so good… the only thing to do here is play it again.” And he did. Right then. When was the last time you heard a DJ who wasn’t left of the dial abuse his/her privilege like that?

I wouldn’t know how to go about locating all those songs. Not sure I want to, since some of them were as much out-and-out shite as, say, Rock of the Westies. But just like everything from that album, it would be good to get them out of my head where they’ve been stuck since 1977. Believe it.

TuneUp, the iTunes plugin that uses digital fingerprinting to help clean up your iTunes library, has launched to the public. The plugin is currently available to Windows users, with a Mac version expected this fall (annoying, by the site’s own admission). You can download it here.

Users can get a free version of the software that limits them to 500 song tag cleanups and 50 album cover lookups (suitable for only the smallest music libraries), or a paid version with no usage restrictions. The cost of the paid version is $12 per year, or $20 for a lifetime subscription. Both versions of the software also include features that will show YouTube videos related to the song currently playing, as well as concerts in the area.

Nielsen Online is publishing stats about the mobile industry in general and the iPhone in particular today. They note that Apple still trails HTC, RIM and Palm in the smartphone market (that’s likely to change rather suddenly over the next few months), but leads the pack when it comes to user satisfaction (they clearly didn’t poll users today).

2/3 of the 2.3 million US iPhone users are men, say Nielsen. 55% are under 35, whereas only 34% of all mobile users are under that age. Most iPhone users make over $75k per year. Most iPhones are also used with email, wifi and as a MP3 player, too. Basically, the typical iPhone user is a young, wealthy, male tech geek type.

What’s in store for the iPhone 3G?
- Nielsen Mobile reports that 3G networks can improve data transfer rates by about six times over 2G and 2.5G networks, on average
- Although some consumers may be frustrated at the mandatory in-store activation of the new iPhone, just 15% of current iPhone owners say they bought their phone online, compared to 68% who said they bought theirs in a store.
- 30% of smartphone users are likely to upgrade their device in the coming year

How many iPhones are already out there?
- Nielsen Mobile estimates that there are 2.3 million US mobile subscribers using an iPhone
- The iPhone accounts for 1% of all embedded mobile phone users in the US

How is the iPhone faring?
- HTC (25.2%), Research in Motion (23.4%), and Palm (19.3%) continue to lead the smartphone industry in market share, with Apple (11.6%) trailing in fourth place.
- Apple iPhone users report the highest overall satisfaction scores among major smartphone manufacturers
- 8% of recently acquired devices by AT&T subscribers were Apple iPhones

Who is using the iPhone already?
- Two-thirds (67%) of US iPhone users are male (compared to 48% of all mobile subscribers)
- 55% of iPhone owners are under the age of 35 (compared to 34% of all mobile subscribers)
- iPhone users tend to be more affluent with 63% earning above $75k (compared to 38% of all mobile subscribers)
- 24% of iPhone owners are Hispanic
- 9.7% of streaming video users and 4.9% of mobile internet users own an iPhone

What features do they use?
- 75% use the phones MP3 player
- 68% use the Wi-Fi functionality of the phone
- 76% send e-mail over their phone

How do iPhone users consume mobile media differently?
- 37% of iPhone users watch video on their phone (making them 10 times as likely as the average mobile consumer)
- 82% access the internet over their phone (making them 5 times as likely as the average mobile consumer)
- 17% stream music over their phone (making them 7 times as likely as the average mobile consumer)
- 20% play online games on their phone (making them 9 times as likely as the average mobile consumer)

Business or Pleasure?
- 15% say their company foots the bill
- 24% say they use their phone for business, but pay the bill themselves
- 61% say they are a personal user

[+]The rises and falls of Apple

In March 2008, Apple, led by "legendary" Steve Jobs, topped Forbes Most Respected Companies in the United State, where Google ranked No.4 and Microsoft far behind - No.16. Being respected while making money is not an easy thing.

Nobody foresaw the company, once in its low, would come back in glory. Back in history, Apple was left alone in the cold due to the introduction of product platforms (open standard) and industrial platforms (labor division within the industry) built by the PC group led by Intel and Microsoft.

Apple's proprietary system throttled the enthusiasm of players in the industry to collaborate in the manufacturing of hardware/software and peripheral products, resulting in few applications usable, which, on the other hand, held consumers back from buying its products. Eventually, Apple was cornered by the PC group into a niche market.

Nobody would deny that Apple's computers had more elegant and appealing shapes. However, it was no rival of the Wintel legion, because they could dig deep into the personal computer market with the power of the entire industry after open standards were formed.

Remarkably, the first surprise Steve Jobs brought the world after coming back to Apple was iPod, which was launched in October 2001. Back at the time, iPod could only be connected with Apple computers through iTunes. Persisting on Apple's tradition for fashionable design, however, it was able to win the favor of its loyal users.

In June 2002, Apple launched iPod Windows version, and then the mid/low-end series, and successfully infiltrated into non-Apple users. Once mocked by its rivals as a "clumsy MP3 player with a mini-hard drive", iPod finally became an icon of imitation.

[+]Beginning to reap the benefits of a "platform"

iPod successfully built two platforms. The first one was a platform of peripheral products, with open interfaces allowing other hardware manufacturers to develop products compatible with iPod, e.g., plug-in FM radios, special voice record pens and digital cameras.

The second platform was iTunes, the one most talked about but none of the rivals could successfully copy. It was first introduced to enable users to synchronize music files with iPod and assist them to manage music files in their computers. Surprisingly, Steve Jobs used it to build his music stores.

The more iPods were sold, the more likely users would buy music. For the traditional music industry, iTunes turned out to be a platform to sell music products in the digital world. With the increase of users who chose to pay for digital music, labels found themselves tied more and more tightly to the platform.

So when Steve Jobs insisted USD 0.99 per song, the labels that originally planned for a price rise had no choice but to agree. Some labels did build their own music distribution websites, but failed to achieve the sales level of Apple.

The support of the admirable iPod sales is the key to the success of Apple, which offers the benefits of a powerful platform of hardware + software + Internet service - benefits which Yahoo! and other Internet players cannot offer. Maybe it is the reason that Google wants to introduce its own cell phones.

The platform can be further expanded. The first approach is to infiltrate into the film distribution market. Now that Steve Jobs has reached his hand into their pockets, film makers, however afraid of following the fate of the music industry, cannot afford to ignore the presence of the platform.

[+]Building a powerful platform with contents

The second approach is that iTunes, while adapting to the Web 2.0 trend, enables ordinary people to make music, broadcasting programs or even films themselves and move them onto Apple music stores. A wide range of PodCast programs are really amazing and of good quality. What's more, the rich contents have increased the confidence of iPod buyers in its value.

However, it is time to use the content platform to introduce new hardware. In June 2007, Apple launched iPhone, an unprecedented achievement through a partnership with AT&T. To use iPhone, users had to register an iTunes ID, and telecom operators share income with Apple.

Such humble operator was never seen before. If not for Apple's bargaining ability backed by the powerful content platform and the user number, the arrogant operators would never have given in.

Interestingly enough, it is said that the same cooperation model proposed by Apple was rejected by China Mobile. Apart from that the latter was the largest mobile operator in the world and hence even more arrogant, it also indicated that the platform was not powerful enough in China to offer a bargaining ability against China Mobile.

Will Apple, which was beaten in the PC market a decade ago, realize the importance of platform and open its iPhone? Currently, iPhone uses Mac OS X operating system. With the increase in sales, there would be more hardware/software and service vendors around the OS, and eventually, new platforms would emerge.

This, however, is not the style of Jobs. iPhone is a proprietary device. In each country, Apple would choose only one operator as its partner. In addition, Mac OS does not have many software service developers. Completely relying on itself, Apple is expected to sell only tens of million cell phones at most.

In terms of building a large cell phone-based platform, wouldn't Nokia, which has much larger sales, present a bigger chance than Apple?

[+]Continue to be proprietary?

Currently, Google is trying to build a series of platforms ranging from cell phone operating system to browser to online service, which it intends to offer free of charge. Apple is doing virtually the same things, but doesn't seem to consider to offer them free to other manufacturers.

The key is Apple does not regard Internet as its core business, at least as of the present time. Both Google and Yahoo! hold Internet as their core business. While the former chooses to develop hardware standards independently and offers them free of charge to the public, the latter chooses to be compatible with all hardware standards.

Other than its own online stores, Apple does not seem to be interested in any other Internet service. Unlike ordinary cell phones, which can only view WAP sites, the iPhone browser enables the viewing of HTML websites. Nor has Apple considered building a wireless portal for all iPhone users to make itself more popular.

As a matter of fact, Apple's understanding of the Internet remains to be around computers. A China Mobile executive once had a negative comment on Apple, saying that downloading music from a computer to a cell phone was not consistent with the experience of cell phone users, who were supposed to download music directly from portals of telecom operators.

Anyhow, Steve Jobs has successfully attracted the eye of the world. Although traffic volume or ad revenue-based profit model is beyond his vision of the Internet market, the success of iPod, iTunes and iPhone is powerful enough to shock traditional cell phone manufacturers. Love me some Saturday.

My ears feel like they need to pop...and its driving me insane! Could my netti pot have done me wrong? (used it at the beginning of the week) or do I have a deep sinus infection or is there gunk all build up? Or...or...maybe its an actual earworm!?!?! Eww. Me thinks its the 2nd choice as the q-tip came back with a normal amount of gunk. I've taken a decongestant to see if that'll help...but nada so far. It's like this weird pressure feeling and sounds are some how muted but at the same time I'm sensitive to them all. Can make a guy's eyes water, I tell ya! If its not better by Monday...I'll make an appointment to see good ole Dr. Patel. I like my doc. He gives me drugs when I ask for them. (The gods were looking down on me when my first choice for a new doc...Dr. Bong...wasn't taking new patients. Ha!)

Finished up The Story of Edgar Sawtelle yesterday afternoon ~~at work~~ during lunch. I liked it...even if I didn't like it.
Not sure what's next. I have a few reserved books to pick up from the 'brary so I'll decide after that trip. I'll probably peruse a book on the history of Cameron Village after reading this post over at Goodnight, Raleigh. Soooo cool! I've always heard about the Underground/Village Subway but never seen it. I really really want to go down there and it is underneath the library but I don't think access is easy.

There will no doubt be some PS3in' in my immediate future. Got the new Battlefield: Bad Company game last night. Still in the getting used to it phase...but I think I'll like it.

On the movie front, I have Michael Clayton....mainly because I was too lazy to rearrange my queue. Its not must see for me...but I've heard its good. I'd also like to knock out a few more eppys of Mad Men. Only 3 in...but I'm liking it.

Gah....my life is boring, huh? But in two weeks, I'll at least get to see The Connells FREE when their turn comes 'round at Raleigh Downtown Live. Been years since I've seem'um and the price is right. Till then...my weekends will be numbingly boring...which for a hermited slacker is actually A-OK.

This ain't The Connells...but it is an actual Earworm. ;) Full circle...ppl...full circle.
