]]>Thad and I hit up the 7:15 showing of X-Files 2 tonight. Wow... it really did suck. Thad had looked it up prior to us going and Rotten Tomatoes had given it only a 21. But being the die-hard X-Files fan that I once was, I really wanted to go see it. It really never felt like an X-Files movie, or episode or anything. The storyline was weak but plausible, taking out the whole idea of "I want to believe" and making it something of a serious fight between religion fanatics and "believing" fanatics. There was a good bit of delving into Mulder's and Scully's relationship - which is what was promised, but to some degree that whole piece just didn't sit well with me. The series was very careful never to take their relationship to that degree, and to all of a sudden see that they had a kid together and a very weird relationship... I dunno. Maybe, but it was weird.
So... it was okay, it wasn't great, I had a hard time keeping attention on it and I wouldn't see it again. That said, I'd go see another X-Files movie if they did it well... maybe something Lone Gunmen next time?

I've been waiting for this movie for more than ten years, like allot of other Watchman fans. After seeing this trailer for next years release I can say it looks like the wait will have been worth it, in fact just see the trailer has been worth the wait.
Let's start this off by saying... being a mom is the hardest and most fun job I've ever had.
After having a conversation with someone about my boredom with life and my routine the other day, I decided to shake things up and find something fun for the kids and me to do last night. You would have thought I suggested pooring hot acid into their eyeballs the way they reacted.
Seriously.
They are use to coming home and going straight to their friends house to play until dinner. I know it's a right of passage during childhood to do so, but I kinda miss the little rugrats and wanted to do something fun with them. So I declared Thursday nights as "family night" and they have to hang out with me.
I suggested Joe's Crab Shack for dinner... then IHOP... then a movie... or go to the pool at the Gym. Each time it was "Can I bring _____?" ... they wanted to bring their friends WITH them. I was trying to explain to them that, no, we needed to do something together as a family. Actually, Nate was all for it, it was my 6-year-old-going-on-13 that claimed she wasn't leaving the house unless she was allowed to go play with her friends.
Sigh. Are you kidding me?!? I am willing to drop a good chunk of change on entertainment and food and you don't want to go?!? When did I stop being a good enough companion for my kids? Use to they couldn't wait to go somewhere with me. They wouldn't let me out of their site for more than 10 minutes. They couldn't even go to the BATHROOM by themselves. !!!
So I finally talk them into this restaurant with a huge-tastic sandbox/sand volleyball for playing in and live band on the patio. We ate dinner, Jenna played volleyball with some other kids... Nate ran from me and tried to bury my car keys in the sand (thank god the electric fob for the doors still works). I had a martini to keep my sanity. Yeah, It was fun.
Then they talked me into a movie. They wanted to go see "The Dark Knight"... but I have heard it's pretty dark and violent, so I nixed that. We decided on "Mamma Mia".
SUCH FUN! The singing and the dancing kept the kids enthralled, and although there is a bit of adult content, it's vague and vieled enough that it was easy to explain away to the kids (namely Jenna) when she asked some questions about it. Now we want to buy the soundtrack (and I am not even really an ABBA fan at all, but might be changing my mind now). I totally recommend it... the acting and singing is fantastic and humorous... and did I mention just FUN?!
The downside was on the way out. I am having HUGE (and I mean SERIOUS) issues with Nate running from me in public... he's fine at home, but get him in a restaurant, store, movie theater and he thinks is HILLARIOUS to run from me. The ONLY thing that works to calm him down and show him the seriousness of the amount of trouble he is in is to spank him. I swear to GOD one of these days he is going to get run over or stolen. I scares the crap outta me.
So last night we are at the movie theater, he had been really good until we went to leave, he TAKES OFF... so far ahead of me in the crowd that by the time we get to the lobby, I can't find him. My heart is hammering. I am scared and mad and embarrassed.
I am that frantic mom you see in public, oblivious to the stares, yelling for her child to come here. RIGHT. THIS. MINUTE. Then counting to one... Two... THREE... feeling my bloodpressure rise with each number uttered.
I finally find him OUTSIDE, by himself, without me, laughing through the glass door at me - as I am frantically looking and calling for him.
I was sooooo MAD. I gripped his little hand and stomped back to the car with him. I wanted to spank him soooo bad, cause he was still laughing at me, but was AFRAID to spank my own child because so many people were around and we live in the kind of nieghborhood that I would certainly be turned into CPS for doing such a thing. People don't spank their kids here. They spoil them to the point of ridiculousness.
But then that meant, by the time we got home, the situation is so long gone that a punishment is less effective. He still got a time out, but really could have cared less at that point. Time out does nothing for him. I was just so frustrated at the situation. And don't get me wrong... I HATE spanking him, but it's the ONLY thing that makes him stop laughing at me and take me seriously. He has ZERO respect for my authority. He doesn't listen. Everything I say is a big joke. I don't know what to do with him. It totally ruined the fun of the night for me because of his behavior.So moral of the story: Go see "Mamma Mia", but don't take your kid if he tends to run from you in public.

A harried mother-of-two, who went to a movie tonight in order to prevent a mental breakdown, and had those two hours, those two hours alone, to regroup and recharge before going back home and attempting to be a good, patient mother until next year, when she just may get to go to another movie.
Dominic and I had a nice date night in last night. He picked me up early from work and we decided to ride around and look at a few houses... found one we LOVED only to discover it was just bought. that seriously sucks. the other one I liked because it was "pretty" has foundational problems and wasn't in the "best" neighborhood. ah well, it will happen eventually.
We rode into Springfield with our hearts downtrodden and decided to rent a movie or two - we usually have to get two because our tastes differ greatly in what titles a movie good. Case in point, Dominic decided on Revolver - a Guy Ritchie flix and I chose Penelope - a Christina Ricci and James Macavoy one.
We also grabbed some bbq for dom and yummy veggies for me to completely round out our evening.
Started with Revolver which started really great, but honestly could have been finished in an hour. And that's not an opinion just coming from me. The movie was a tad over 100 minutes and we felt we had been watching it for freaking ever. And I like Guy Ritchie stuff for the most part. sigh
Penelope was a surprising find in the fact that both Dom and I enjoyed it. Really sweet little movie with a good moral and very clean come to think of it. I may have to get that one for the niece.... It was nice to see Ricci play a character with life and personality and of corse Macavoy is both nice to look at and displays some serious chops.
All in all, it was a great date night and I'm glad we were able to chill out and forget about house hunting for 4 hours... sigh....
I didn't stay for the end credits, but whoever played The Joker in the latest Batman movie is like, really really good.
Oh, that's right it was Heath Ledger! Now let me crawl out from my rock and say this: he should be nominated for an Oscar.
I was, like some of you, a little inundated with all the press and coverage of "The Dark Knight" and Ledger's 'award-winning performance'. And I, like some of you, just didn't buy it. I was going to see the movie no matter what and I was going to like it no matter what, but I still didn't understand all the premature Academy Award hype. Picking Oscar nominees in July is like choosing the league MVP during spring training. There's still a loooong season to go.
Now, after wading through all the hysteria and hype, I actually made it to the movie theater. Heath Ledger steals every scene. He steals every line. He's freakishly perfect. He deserves an Oscar. And movie lovers deserved a lot more of Heath Ledger.
I recently tried to tell Clark that it was not a good idea to let Boogie watch the Spider-Man movies... He replied, "But he already saw the first one and wasn't scared at all!" I said that I still thought it was a bad idea, since it is a PG13 movie and all... Well, last night, I got the last laugh... The following is Clark's post to his gamer group's board:

About 2 weeks ago, the Boy and I watched the first Spider-man movie - you guys know, he loves Spider-man. We had a good time and he really enjoyed the movie even though he was playing around for most of it.
Now, last night, I was tucking him into bed and giving him a hug and kiss. When I leaned in to give him a kiss, he started sticking his tongue out ... I backed away and was like "Dude, what are you doing? That's not how you give kisses!" The little bastard says, "Well that is how that girl kisses Spider-man in the movie..."
So ... now you have proof - he's always paying attention whether or not you think he is ...

Hahahahahahaha... When the boy tried to stick his tongue in my mouth the other day, I just told him to knock it off and stop being silly... I didn't bother to ask where he'd seen that kind of kissing... (Quite frankly, I was sure he must have snuck up on Clark and me recently, but I digress)... 星期四很想去看死神的精準度，假如趕的完稿就去
週五瓦力上映，發覺很想找朋友看上午第一場，因為人很少，要是之後看就可能會遇到吵鬧的小孩，我不洗荒
說到電影，我覺得跟不同的人看電影是種好壞參半的冒險，我喜歡跟有能力說出自己對電影想法的人去看，無關優劣，卻總是刺激著我的思考。甚至能陪我坐著看完片尾的朋友更令我感動。
Eason的專輯終於被我拋下，但代價是每一首歌詞都背起來都會唱，常去唱歌的朋友總是很訝異，為何我連不是副歌的部分都會唱，而且會超多歌，那源自我強迫症的聽歌方式啊！然而 對eason有強迫症是幸福的！
預計再瘦三公斤、頭髮剪短、避免再曬黑、修鬍子，畢竟我長的也不差啊，還是弄清爽斯文一點好，我不要被說像五月天的阿信>"<

Dark Knight is the first movie I’ve seen in about 10 years where no
one’s cellphone went off during the movie. In a theatre of nearly 350
people, the dull din of conversation through the previews was constant,
but when the opening credits started to roll, the crowd was eerily
hushed. The hype, the money, the postmortem lookie-loos are really
irrelevant to the film and it’s quality. Dark Knight has very few flaws
for the nitpickers, and follows Batman Begin’s tradition of industrial
fantasy and dark horse heroes. Dark Knight is a landmark in what is
fast becoming a cinema trend of the new millennium, one that
specifically caters to web-savvy Gen-Xers.
In
Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne (Bale) laments his ex-girl Rachel’s
(Gyllenhaal) relationship with the new DA, Harvey Dent (Eckhart). Dent
cuts broadly into organized crime, enraging the bosses who are left.
New villain Joker (Ledger) advises the mob that the real problem is
Batman: the caped crusader emboldens the law while making even the most
seasoned criminal think twice about going out at night. Joker proposes
to eliminate the Batman, and becomes obsessed with revealing his true
identity. His maniacal plans rattle every level of Gotham government as
Joker gets closer and closer to unmasking Batman. Bruce Wayne continues
his tango with vigilante justice, hoping Dent will take over the role
of city protector, but is ultimately unable to (or forced to) don the
cloak and shuriken once again.
Oscar buzz is already underway for Heath Ledger’s posthumous performance as the Joker, but he’s not the only star of Dark Knight. In fact, Christian Bale’s Batman might have the weakest performance in the movie, as events force his hand, move around him, but his loved ones face the worst danger and have the opportunity to be more dynamic. Gyllenhaal’s earthy Rachel is a welcome update from Katie “scheduling conflict” Holmes’. Michael Caine is eternally Michael Caine. Morgan Freeman plays a more active role this time around, stepping outside of James-Bondian Outfitter status to assist Bruce Wayne with right-hand-matters.

Ledger’s performance is a must-see. He’s quippy and a self-professed “agent of chaos”. It’s easy to laugh when he deals wit, even at the most inappropriate times. Joker has at least two different stories for how he got his scars, and each story is equally convincing. His plans are devious, and usually end with his minions betraying each other for a larger share of the pot. He’s deeply disturbed: mutilating or torturing for kicks, tongue darting like a lizard’s, turning friends against friends in perverted games of paradox. The most chilling scenes are the Joker’s video manifestos: off-kilter, too close up, and full of annoying-yet-creepy microphone clicks. One of Joker’s stunts made everyone in the audience leap with shock, another made them squirm for two minutes before the situation resolved. Joker’s a true character, and it’s very hard to believe that’s Heath Ledger beneath the cracking makeup and stringy hair.
Most surprising is Eckhart’s performance as Harvey Dent. Dent’s downfall is foreshadowed lightly and chronicled carefully. We want to trust Harvey Dent for his good-natured attitude and boyish good looks, but simultaneously distrust any brand-name politician or lawyer. He’s set up to be Batman’s legal alternative and a possible means for Bruce Wayne’s retirement, but this is ultimately not meant to be. The two become very close, and then shatter apart in an instant. Scarier than a psychotic clownster in makeup, Dent is the everyman gone wrong.
With
all of these characters, it shouldn’t surprise you that Dark Knight is
2.5 hours long. The story progresses nicely through most of this time,
up to the end, where you realize your butt is sore and the film starts
playing fast and loose with the moral message. Stances are changed,
villains are dispatched, and resolutions are offered, but they’re
decidedly fluffy ones. Thankfully, they’re the kind of
slightly-inelegant fluffy that wraps up a long film and sets up a
sequel.
Artistically, the movie doesn’t miss a beat in picking up the tone and style from Batman Begins. There’s a certain dark-tech aesthetic blended with martial arts that was popularized by The Matrix and continues to permeate the action genre. More than style, the themes are hyper-relevant: cynicism and love of the underdog. Baby Boomers may claim influence over their offspring, and certainly the disillusionment with a government’s effectiveness is a common complaint among this age group and their children alike. But there’s a certain love of the underdog, paired with angst and acidic sarcasm, that is found only in the now 30-somethings, contemporaries of most of Dark Knight’s cast. These underdogs are championed from reality TV to elections, and Batman is certainly their hero.
It’s no wonder that the film is breaking records and resonating with fans of all ages. Beyond the kick-ass action and stainless steel style, Dark Knight plays on issues of the age. Believe the hype: this is an excellent companion to Batman Begins, and sets up the franchise for another stellar movie, if and when Joker’s enormous shoes are filled.
]]>I’d been looking forward to this film for weeks – in fact it was the deciding factor for me to stay in New Zealand for the Auckland International Film Festival – and I wasn’t disappointed. The scenery was as stunning as expected – vast plains and simple nomadic settlements framed by dusky mountain ranges on the great steppes of Mongolia. In this first part of the planned trilogy I don’t know whether Director Sergei Bodrov challenged the genre but he certainly made a good job of it.

I caught The Dark Knight with my buddy Nesh on Sunday. Our consensus? It's great but not as good as it's hyped up to be.
To me it was highly entertaining for sure, well-paced even at 2.5hours and chock full of action and snarky humor which I was thankful for because 2.5hours is a long time in Woodland's Causeway Point. That cinema totally fails.
Anyhow, I loved Batman Begins when it came out because it was refreshing and I enjoyed how the franchise looks to grow increasing darker with TDK. Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent was quite cool actually, probably the stand out performance of the show, IMO at least. The late Heath Ledger as The Joker? Yes, it was an excellent performance, definitely better than Jack Nicholson's portrayal but I'm not sure if it's really his best work. The character itself has been layered as such but I felt Heath's more sinister, psychopathic portrayal fitted in well with the direction that Christopher Nolan's taking. Two-Face stole the thunder for me. I am awaiting how the next instalment turns out.
On a side note, Singaporean actor Ng Chin Han (last remembered for being part of the amazingly bad local drama Masters of the Sea) plays the Hongkie baddie Lau. Good to know that clipped British accent came in useful somewhere.
In other news, I met up with Dondi, a secondary schoolmate of mine who I haven't seen in 14 years! Yeah, we're super old. It was a last minute thing - he was in Batam leading his bank's incentive trip for some of the guys under him, so he's in town till Tuesday.
I managed to pull Mark Lee, Marcus Tang and Almeric (the rest pulled out or had family to take care of) for a dinner and drinks get together at Brewerkz. Fun times reminiscing and catching up on things and grappling with the fact we're turning 30 and some of us are married and have 2 kids. Deep down though, we're still the same snotty 16year olds pulling pranks on one another.
Right now, we're trying to organise a proper reunion next year. It'll be 15 years since we all graduated and would you believe we've never had a single reunion? We tried last year but one of us got arrested and erm, it didn't happen. We're thinking some sort of golf tournament, though I don't golf myself but yeah whatever, it'd be nice to catch up with everyone. I miss my school days, not for the academic part, but for everything else.
