Chairlift in a Mac Ad

It’s always fun for us here when a band we supported early on ends up in a Mac commercial. It's happened a bunch, most recently with the Ting Tings (and a little known fact is that KCRW DJ/ Music Supervisor Liza Richardson placed Jet's song “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” in the iPod ad that launched their career).

The newest band is Chairlift, you know, “I tried to do handstands for you…” -- it’s catchy and sweet and really grabs your attention. Nic first played that song in July 2007 off a demo. His girlfriend was at a show and liked it so much she grabbed the CD for him. Bands out there – it just goes to show, you never know who is going to be in the audience! It’s another one of those “this is how you get on KCRW” stories.

He’s been playing “Bruises” again so keep an ear out for it and other new bands he is digging at the moment, including Australia’s Boat People, The Peth (Super Furry Animals drummer Dafydd Ieuan along with Rhys Ifans, Dic Ben, Kris Jenkins and Mick Hilton), Courteeners (a tip from our guest DJ Morrissey), and local singer Emily Wells.

When Nic Harcourt first took the reins as host of Morning Becomes Eclectic, producer Ariana Morgenstern asked him who he would like to have on as a guest. Morrissey was on the shortlist but it has taken over 10 years to fulfill that request! The music legend will make his KCRW debut as a guest DJ during Morning Becomes Eclectic on Friday, August 29 at 11:05am PST (on air and streaming at KCRW.com.)

As everyone knows, Morrissey is not one to hide his strong opinions but he is as much an outspoken fan as he is a critic. He shares some of his favorite music and talks to Nic about life and his new album

Breaking news: I just got this press release for Morrissey's Live at the Hollywood Bowl DVD for release in the UK on October 6th.

As of this writing, I'm not aware that this DVD will be released in the US, our last major DVD release for Morrissey was Who Put the M in Manchester in 2005.

You Brits are so lucky.

UPDATE: Of course this is typically Morrissey. Given the opportunity, he denounces everything from Babylon Books to Johnny "rodent" Rogan. What he doesn't say that he actually does get music publishing royalties, granted it may not be a lot of money derived from the DVD sales... Anyway, you gotta love the guy.

The slapdash release of Morrissey live at the Hollywood Bowl is done by Warner without any consultation to me whatsoever, and is in breach of their terms as laid out by themselves in an agreement made for the film between Warner and my ex-manager. Being Warner, predictably the sleeve art is appalling. It is the work of cash-hounds, and I urge people NOT to buy it. I am not signed to Warner, and no royalties from this dvd will come to me. Please spend your money elsewhere.

UPDATE 8/27: This doesn't surprise me, given Morrissey's dispute in the matter, that I have been told "The Morrissey 'Live At The Hollywood Bowl' DVD has been postponed pending a new release date."

Skybombers - It Goes Off

Here's a quicky, just because there are some news & notes. Since, you may have noticed, I like doing these theme posts, this theme are one-song submissions.

I actually really love San Francisco's Loquat, so imagine my surprise to find that I have an advance copy of their brand new album, Secrets of the Sea - which is not out until the third quarter of this year. Since I can't unveil any music from the new album, I will tell you that I first discovered her a few years ago when Loquat covered The Smiths' classic "There is a Light That Never Goes Out". Since I was already a huge Morrissey/Smiths fan, it's easy to fall in love with her version... which is a safe and very faithful cover.

Theresa Andersson - Birds Fly Away

Since I am in love with all-things Swedish, here's a handsome girl called Theresa Andersson. Looking over her press release about her tour dates and the dazzling 700k youtube views. The weird thing is that the press release doesn't indicate any link to the actual video, but if you were curious, it is her playing in her kitchen (in New Orleans?).

I was given one of her song, "Birds Fly Away", from her upcoming album Hummingbird, Go! (is that a nod to Thunderbirds Are Go!?) on September 2^nd, and I thought it was very 60s pop girl-sounding, but with weird percussion instruments. I was happy to see that Mr Tobias Fröberg is producing her album.

The Dares - Love Me When I Leave

Speaking of keeping an eye... Here's The Dares, an up-and-coming power pop trio from California, by the way of Vermont. Maybe I'm just old, but usually this kind of high-energy, on the verge of punk, type of music really isn't my cup of tea. However, I would have to admit this "Love Me When I Leave" is pretty catchy. It's very short, I had to re-play it a few more time to hear how well produced it is.

They're currently signed to Zomba Recordings, which is a division of Sony/BMG, so expect a push from them on popular radio this Summer. Even if they don't do much this year, youth is on their side, I'm sure you'll hear from them next year.

The Space Between Things - Towel (More Vocals)

After three version of his "Towels" song, Chris Hobson, aka The Space Between Things finally settled for his perfect version of "Towels". The irony would be if I f-ed up and uploaded the wrong version :/

I'm not given a whole lot to work with here, just one song and no biography. Instead, he directs me to an interview he did at Daydream Generation, which showcase the awesomely snowy Toronto (which means, shock, he's Canadian). Daydream must really like him, as he's also on their Daydream Generation 5 free compilation (over 300mb of music!)

Taking a break from tagging

I've been tagging my Dad's mp3s for days. -_- For days, meaning, it's a LOT of mp3s. I'm getting tired of it, so I should resume tagging some other time especially those assorted ones (not in albums, if you know what I mean.) I've been thinking of what to do next. There's a lot, but I should list down what I should finish first. Hmm...

Yesterday, me and my mom were driving around house hunting in another neighborhood (over the fucking rainbow, pretty much, considering where I actually live). After we split a foot long at Subway, being the thrifty Recessionistas that we are, stepped into the Goodwill next door.

Thrift stores to my mom have become somewhat alien since she hasn't frequented them since the early to mid-90's when we lived on basically nickels. I have somewhat of a hard time shaking my poor habits and have never stopped going to them and I find it more beneficial anyway. The entire time I went to school, I never faced the ill-received fiasco of showing up wearing the same outfit as someone else who got it--big surprise here--AT THE MALL. I can think of a few things, including jump roping with my aorta, that I'd rather do than shop at that god be dammned mall (it's more of a 'fugly' thing than 'consumerism' thing, btw).

Anyways, we had failed to realize that the Goodwill that we walked into was a 'hipster' spot and I, unfortch, happened to be wearing a really old Morrissey Bona Drag t-shirt. My mom philandered through the housewares while I went through the clothes. A really nasal-sounding hipster came from behind his cash register and asked me, "Are you really a Morrissey fan?"

Maybe I'm a snot but I just detest being approached by staff when I'm especially involved in going through a rack under 30 minutes. And I was hating this even more if for the fact that it was one of these skinny jean and vintage shirt wearing hip people who I have to add was giving me the one over.

I don't know if it was reading on my face at that exact moment how much I wanted to throw a shoe at his forehead. Like uh, naw, I'm not a Morrissey fan! His shirts are just part of my leisure wear!

FTW, dude. What kind of question is that?

I loathe these hip people. With a passion. And I didn't give him the satisfaction of a reply.

Um, a little OT maybe but I am putting together my fall wardrobe and sadly with incoming recession and laziness on Mona's part, I'm reverting back to my regular Juno-wear composed of flannel, skirts, wool hosiery, windbreakers and Chuck Taylors (that bitch stole my wardrobe, btw. I have photographic evidence of that Mona Edward Lopez was the original Juno). I'm going to be watching rich people's brats and maybe, if I work up to it, work on my entry for the 2009 Nicholl fellowship that my ex-teacher wants me to to participate in (something about keeping the left-side of my brain squishy with creativity in the meantime before I go to college place thing), so really, there's no reason to dress. At least not for a while.

Sigh.
