Since I am in the middle of writing homework assignments and tests for my college class, I'll do a list of 13 important things to do to effectively complete a good research paper.  :D  (Doesn't this just sound exciting?  LOL)

Let's assume that we have been given this topic: "The Pawnee Tribe"

1. First, think about the broader topic...Native Americans (or possibly American Indians)
2. Find a good reference book (encyclopedia, dictionary, etc..) dealing with Native American Tribes
3. Read the article on The Pawnee and answer these 5 inquiries: Who, What, When, Where, Why (this is called 'gaining a working knowledge'.  You just want to have a basic understanding of the topic.)
4. Look at all the possibilities of how to narrow this topic down (The broader your topic, the more shallow and uninteresting you paper is.)  Here's a good narrow research topic "The economy of the Pawnee Tribe".
5. Think about a way to go beyond just listing facts about the topic (good research papers discuss and inquire, not just list facts.)  Maybe, "How the Pawnee Tribe's economy affected the tribe's survival."  Now we are discussing and inquiring...not just listing facts that are in every reference book out there.
6. Now, create a preliminary outline.  This outline will probably change, but you need to organize your thoughts in order to effectively and efficiently research your topic.  Choose about 5 or 6 ideas to search about.  Such as: Pawnee economy (how do they create sustenance...do they hunt, farm, trade, etc...); The Pawnee location and climate; The Pawnee's neighbors (other tribes in the area); Pawnee's interaction with the 'white man'; changes in economy - did they change how they acquired food? did they suffer at times? why?; Pawnee economy through history - early times, strongest time, affects of interactions with white settlers, current situation (do they even have an economy now?).  These small topics will allow you to search for information.  During the search, you might find some good things to include...or find that one of your focus points isn't going to work...then you can edit your outline a bit.
7. Decide on good keywords and terms for your topic.  Native Americans, American Indians, Pawnee Tribe, Pawnee, sustenance, economy, hunting, gathering, farming, agriculture, etc...
8. Take keywords and make good search strings - these keywords are only going to be useful if you combine them in the correct way.  Computers are not smart, they do not know what you want...you have to tell them, in the computer's language, what you want.  You wouldn't want to just search for economy.  You would want to combine it with either Native Americans or Pawnee Tribe...so we only get results for economy relating to this group of people.
9. Take these good search strings and search the catalog in the library. Start by reading books on the topic: Books often are more comprehensive and have established knowledge. Articles often are more experimental...discussing possibilities.  AND...books give you awesome bibliography lists of articles where you might find more information on the topic.
10. Now search in the databases for articles - both articles you found in the bibliographies of the books and search with your search strings to find more articles about the topic.  Remember, articles often cover more specific topics.
11. Look for research that has been done, such as case studies, surveys, and other statistics.  These add depth to your paper and help you to back up your arguments.
12. Organize your notes.  Everyone will have a different method that works for them.  I'll tell you mine:  As I'm reading through the books and articles (many times, I'll do a quick read through and then go back and read with the intention of pulling out good pieces of information), I keep a Word document open, with a landscape grid on it.  I color code the information.  Each piece of info goes into a separate cell on the grid.  All the stuff that is statistics is in one color and all the stuff about Pawnee farmers is in another color and so on.  I also list what book and page that piece of info came from.  (often I'll just come up with a key or legend to follow...like on a map.  Everything from book #1 has something like this attached to it: RS-B.pg3-5  It tells me the title (Research Strategies), the author (Badke), and the page numbers the info was on (pg 3-5).)  That's helpful to me...but could be complicated to others.  Maybe just typing the whole thing out every time is better for you.  :)  After I've read everything and have my color coded notes, I can pull all the green stuff out and just work with it to write up a little blurb about that part of the topic and then the same with the next.  This also helps in determining what part of the topic you need to find more information on.
13. Now you can start putting that paper together.  I work in parts...each piece of the topic (like, all the green stuff first and then all the red stuff, etc..) and then I think about what points should be in the introduction and conclusion and then I connect the different parts with nice transitions.  And then it's all about the reference list and editing until it's perfect.  :D

   Comedy
   You stumble from one unrealistic situation to another, upset quirky people wherever you go and generally get kicked out and chased around until at the end, everything gets wrapped up in a hurried, almost unplanned fashion. Basically, the exact same thing as the action star, but with more laughing... hopefully...
   
   Downside: Nobody takes you seriously, and if you do too much physical comedy, people on the street start to think that hitting you with stuff is funny and harmless.
   
   Romance
   You're the guy who gets the girl... or the girl who (unlike in real life) ends up with the sweet, caring, gentle man at the end. And when that's over, you move on to the next film and get to experience it all again!
   
   Downside: When that's over, the perfect man/woman goes back to their trailor, drinks, fights with their actual spouse and pretty much leaves you in the dust. Oh, and you never get any "action". That's a different genre...
5. What was the last movie you watched at home?
   Fool's Gold.

   Nope.

• My trip to Ohio. It was fun and relaxing. Good to see everyone again. :)

• Having a nice fellowship meal with church family
• Not puking on the plane.  I was sick, but I didn't puke.  Yay me! lol
• Seeing all of Crystal's animals (4 dogs, 2 ferrets, and 4 birds)
• The fall colors are here!
• Not having to pay for my luggage.
• Getting two research projects (for professors) at work. Got one done. Working on the other.
• My allergies were really tolerable the whole trip...even with 10 animals around me! :)
• Having a good night sleep on my own bed. :)
  

• My laptop AC adapter cord has shorted out. Have to buy a new one....will be w/o my computer for 5 days. :(
• Air sickness is yukky.  :(
• paying 25 bucks for parking at the airport.

This weekend, I've been in Ohio, visiting my BFF and other friends.  I used to live here.  The main purpose of taking this trip this weekend was the New Kids on The Block concert in Cleveland.  It was Friday night and it was FUN!  We really enjoyed ourselves.  It's pretty exciting to have them back.  This group was a big part of our childhoods.  :)  We have pretty much only listened to NKOTB music all weekend.  You can listen at Last.fm.

I'm going to a NKOTB concert tonight...LOL  I feel 16 again.  I went to 3 New Kids concerts when I was younger.  I'm really not a concert going type, but this reunion tour is just plain FUN.  My best friend and I were big New Kids fans.  Not really into the music so much (neither is she...she loves Metal music)...although there are some good songs.  They put on a good show and they were popular in a time when both of us really needed an escape from reality.  Both of us had really tough childhoods and teen years...with family drama and bad men doing bad things to our mothers and our families and us.  So, NKOTB was that outlet.  We have awesome memories of them.  :)

This new album is actually not too bad.  I like some of the songs.  Some of them are a little too racy for me.  LOL  But, the beat is good and some of them are rather catchy.  :D

So, here's my list

3. There are 5 members (there were some other members at the beginning...before it became NKOTB): Donnie, Joe, Danny, Jon, and Jordan

• G'ma's birthday party on Friday (she's 92!)
• The leaf shaped cut-out cookies I made today...they are very yummy.  :)
• It's nice and cool today.
• Got the yard mowed, probably for the last time this year.  Got all the summer stuff put away and the winter stuff pulled out in the garage.  :)
• G'pa got to come home from the hospital, on G'ma's birthday!  :)
• My brother announced his 30th birthday party...and I realized that my little brother is turning 30!  Wow.
• My nephew gave me lots of kisses and hugs and we played with a toy car.  fun!

• I got paid today.  It's not much at all, but it's something. :)

Saturday 9: You've Got a Friend

1. Who is your best friend?
   Vivi, Susan, and Danny.
2. How did you meet?
   Vivi and I went to the same university. I met Susan on-line. Danny is a friend of Vivi's and my friend.
3. How long have you known each other?
   Vivi and I have been friends since 1988. I can't remember when I met Susan, my guess is 2001-2002. Danny has been a close friend of mine since 1997.
4. Have you traveled anywhere together?
   Vivi and I went to Bali once together and she visited me once when I was in Singapore. I've never traveled anywhere with Susan and Danny, but I hung out with Susan in Singapore.
5. Did you ever have a problem over a romantic interest that you shared?
   Hahaha. NO! We always fell for different guys :)
6. Have you ever not liked your best friend’s choice of lovers?
   Yes, when they treated my friends badly - but anyway as long as my dear friends want to keep their relationship then I should be happy for them.
7. How long since you have seen your best friend?
   I just met Vivi few days ago. The last time I saw Susan was before she migrated to the UK. The last time I met Danny was on August 17, 2008.
8. Do you remember each other on birthdays and holidays?
   Sure!

   We almost never have had a fight and I hope we will never have one, no matter how small it is.
