Dear Vox, I have a grievance to file

Listen. I know you have to make money. In fact, I have no problem with the idea of you making money through advertising or whatever. Vox is a business like any other and needs to stay afloat like any other business.

Unfortunately, I have to call into question your respect for us, the users, in your quest to make money. The sponsored weekly questions are starting to look more and more like things that are straight off of surveys, which tells me that our answers to those questions are being used for marketing research. And even that is fine to an extent, but here's the thing: Vox, the most offensive thing about this is that you are obviously using our blogs for market research and not being explicitly forward about it. It leaves a very, very bad taste in my mouth to see something being displayed innocently as a prompt for something to write about, without full disclosure of why the question is being asked.

So here's what I propose: if you are going to continue this practice, at the very least, include a splash page informing people that their response will be used for marketing research between the click of the button and the actual compose page. Include a box to tick to opt out of inclusion in that marketing research for people who only wish to respond to the question. To me, doing otherwise seems pretty sneaky and underhanded.

Anyway, while I wish you all the best, I hope this practice does not continue in the same way it has.

I really have no idea how many people on here share my objections, but I hope that if anyone does, Vox will listen to us and maybe take some of these suggestions into consideration. Any comments on this are definitely appreciated.

Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting

That song brings back so many memories. My dad always aspired to bring more culture to his kids - so when we were growing up we saw a lot of international films. Some were great, inspiring even…but others were not so awesome. In the mix, my dad would always get us to watch Kung Fu films…sneaky little man. But, I have grown to love every Bruce Lee movie, and…and others which right now all I remember are certain scenes - but no names.

The reason I write about this is I received an email today from Creativity-online.com - it held the new commercial from Pepsi. I really can not say enough of how AWESOME it is! Take a look....

Social Media and Networking: the End All Be All of Message Vehicles?

While working as a content provider on a contract gig, a colleague schooled me on the meaning of the "Interstitial" and "Portlet" in the context of Web development. I thought I had an idea of what he meant, but in reality I had to pull an online and print dictionary out and look both of those things up. It was clear I had 'no clue' as his e-mails implied (copied to my manager of course) and I sat at my desk skulking and wondering if I had hurled an insult at him, based on the extent of his annoyance.

In an effort to educate myself, I learned that an Interstitial webpage" is an in-between page, originally developed for pop-up advertising, but now may also be for additional information beyond what appears on a main web page. This is what I was writing for, a referral page from a "teaser" blurb, which referred back to this interstitial page. Many folks find these pages, especially when they are used as an advertisement, as an annoyance and basically something in the way of them viewing what they intended to view. What my colleague took issue with was not only my lack of understanding of the purpose of the proposed page, but the fact that I hadn't created an original message for it. Lesson learned on my part, and I sat corrected in my Eon "wannabe" office chair.

A Portlet is a self contained box, often with software components embedded, that provides live and refreshed data. Less odious than an interstitial webpage used for advertising, usually portlets contain unique and timely information.

This coworker, an avid proponent of Social Media and to give him credit where it's due, is fighting an uphill battle to get a "regulated beyond belief" workplace too effectively communicate a message to an audience of non-tech and tech-savvy employees without stifling opportunities for creative brilliance or understanding. Part of his plan was to get the powers that be to get beyond calling something a "Webpage" but accurately describing what it was, in this case a portal ....

International Medical Corps Wins $100,000 Grant from American Express to Save Malnourished Children

October 14, 2008, Los Angeles, Calif. –International Medical Corps (IMC) has been awarded $100,000 through the American Express Members Project. The grant will be used to treat malnourished children worldwide. IMC is one of five organizations to receive funding in the nationwide campaign where American Express Card members submit and vote for projects that are meant to bring people and organizations together for positive change.

The funding will be used to implement the project, ‘Saving the Lives of Malnourished Children.’ Submitted by American Express cardmember Paige Strackman, the project focuses on treating malnutrition through nutrient-rich, ready-to-eat food, which International Medical Corps provides to more than 35,000 children every month through a network of 215 supplementary and therapeutic feeding sites in some of the world’s most food-insecure environments, including Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Somalia. The project was selected by an elite panel out of 1,190 others and received more than 14,000 votes in the final round of competition.

“I submitted this project because, as a mother, I cannot ignore that five million children under five die every year due to malnutrition,” says Paige. “This funding will save thousands of malnourished children around the world who otherwise may not have been reached. I am so grateful to everyone who supported this project and helped make it a reality.”

While the project was submitted by one individual hoping to make a difference, it gathered public momentum. The project’s message was shared in the media from Los Angeles to New York, on nearly 200 blogs across the Internet, through thousands of emails and on social networking sites, including Facebook, My Space and Twitter.

The grant from American Express comes at an opportune time when rising food costs are driving millions deeper into poverty everyday while trying to afford basic staples. As a result, hunger and malnutrition kill more people each year than HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria combined.

“We are incredibly grateful to Paige for not only submitting the project, but also for fueling it with the passion to make it so successful,” says Rebecca Milner, Vice President of Institutional Advancement. “There are approximately 178 million children around the world who are malnourished and only 3 percent get treatment. This funding makes it possible for International Medical Corps to reach more of those children who desperately need our help.”

In Democratic Republic of Congo alone, International Medical Corps’ supplementary feeding centers admitted 3,500 new children in the past two months. At one center for severely malnourished children, IMC has a 35-bed capacity, but is accommodating 82. Another 30 children await treatment. This trend is symptomatic of the food insecurity affecting East Africa and much of the developing world. The World Food Program estimates that 15.7 million of those in need are in East Africa, and another 8.6 million are in Afghanistan.

With a mission that focuses on training, International Medical Corps works to empower individuals and communities, providing education on how to treat malnutrition, identify warnings signs, and intervene before malnutrition worsens. Health care workers and parents are educated on proper diet and hygiene, and communities are equipped to grow their own food and reduce their vulnerability to rising prices.

In light of recent events, the economic crisis, the on-going presidential debates and so forth, I believe that now is a delicate, though effective time to speak out about public relations in the government.

The statement that I am about to make may turn out to be a deal breaker as I know that President George Bush is not the most popular man in the United States right now. However, I sincerely consider the time that he has served this country as our president to have been quite fruitful. On the other hand, he, as well as the presidential cabinet have been the victims of much ridicule, in large part, due to poor public relations.

In the production of "Hamlet" William Shakespeare words were immortalized: "To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the day the night, thou canst not then be false to any man."

Allow me to use the Presidential Debates, particularly those of last night, as an example. The fighting words that Senators Obama and McCain have been using against each other are not an indication of men who are being true to themselves. Understandable......

Honda Grooves

Lancaster, California may not have been one of the more publicized cities in Los Angeles County…and now it will probably stay that way. Honda had received permission to use a road at the edge of the town to create a musical road. The quarter-mile stretch of road which, features grooves in the pavement in such a way that if you drive at the right speed, you would have heard: "The William Tell Overture" by Gioachino Rossini – you might know it as the theme to: "The Lone Ranger".

I say would have, because on September 22^nd (just 17 days after it was created), the road was paved over. The people of the town complained that the volume was too loud. They stated that "When you hear it late at night, it will wake you up from a sound sleep". RPA, Honda's agency, will include the musical road in an ad that should be airing at the present.

Funny how the city originally signed onto the campaign for more publicity, thus passes Lancaster's primary attraction. Anyhow, here is the new commercial from Honda:

Being Careful with the Words We Choose

Please someone tell me–how many more days until the election? SIGH. Although this highly charged political year has been exciting and entertaining, it's also been exhausting. Now nearing the home stretch, it appears that nerves are becoming frayed and a sense of common sense has been lost.

We all know the historic nature of this year's presidential election, and we know why it is historic. With that said, communication directors of both campaign's owe it to their candidates to advise against the use of inflammatory language and innuendo to "rally their base of support".

We've all heard it, we know that Senator Obama was the first of any presidential candidate to receive Secret Service Protection. If you have ever paid attention to Senator Obama work a crowd, the Secret Service detail is rather thick, especially if you compare the number of suits guarding the other candidates..............

The Importance of Color

Daily, I am amazed at how important color can be to some people. Where I might see that the color should be Blue, others (clients, friends, family – whoever), see Red – and then blame you for the color problem :o). Now, if this is a client then – obviously – they are right. But what if I see no color? What if all they see is color…and have a problem with that…what do you do?

During this election, I have been flabbergasted by the violent outcry of people against Obama. I cannot remain silent any longer; America is not as far evolved as we would like to think. Now, I am not trying to sound pro- anyone – I am not a Democrat or a Republican, just an Independent who is merely making a point. I read on CNN.com, that people are actually expressing their decision to not vote for Obama merely because of his skin color. Gerry McEntee is the President of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. He is also a leader in the AFL-CIO's 2008 election program. He recently spoke at a labor rally in Ohio of his frustration about the refusal, of some white union members to support Obama...

What Is Happening People??

Like my fellow blogger, Pamela, said earlier: "Please someone tell me–how many more days until the election? SIGH." This campaign is getting really strange, and to a point…scary - people are getting "verbally violent". Pamela was right, America is not as far evolved as we would like to think. I was watching the news on Friday, and could not believe me ears as I heard people scream out that Obama is a…"terrorist" or "bomb obama". WHAT??!!

Then I figured out what the problem is (besides the definite racial issues): McCain. Like everyone in the good ole US of A should have been watching last Tuesday, I was watching the Presidential debate. What I saw, put everything into perspective. It took me some time to find this clip, but here is a perfect example of the nature of the old U.S.A.

I know that recently, McCain has tried to calm down the attacks on Obama, by stating during a rally that "he indeed respected Senator Obama, and thought of him as a decent man…a family man, and that there was no need for anyone to fear him if he were to be elected president." But I think the damage is done.

Economy Bailout Song: AIG, Freddie Mac, Lehman Bros

I don't need to tell you this, but our economy is doing just horribly. Just like everyone else in America, when I found out the news about AIG, Freddie Mac and Lehman Brothers…I was floored, flabbergasted.

You see I worked at AIG, about 3 - 4 years ago; and during their new hire orientation - which lasted 4 hrs - about 90% of the time was concentrated on how big and powerful AIG was. AIG was the parent company of "hundreds" of companies, had thousands of employees; and was making millions of dollars. In the end you left thinking, "Wow, I work for a great and powerful company." But anyway, I digress.

With all that is happening, I thought that we could use a laugh or two. Here are a couple of guys who made a very funny song about the state of the economy.
