How We Met

Quite some time has gone by since then, 7 years to be exact. We've both been together for those 7 years, actually my anniversary was just this past April. We both met when we were very young, I was 18, he was 16... I know you're probably asking yourself what I was doing with someone so young. It wasn't that young to be honest, two years, yea he was still in high school and I had just graduated the summer before, but it wasn't young. I still remember the way we both met, seems like yesterday, or long ago, either way I still remember ti clearly.

We both came from different families, nationalities, ways of living. I come from a close and so has he, only things still seemed different. Neither one of us had been out of the close to our families, just a couple of friends on my part, I'm assuming the same went with him. Just a few close friends, so anyhow. We had originally met in an AOL chat room.

Sketchy, right? Back then it really wasn't though, the internet wasn't as it is now, at least it didn't seem that way, and he seemed honest. I still don't know what made me even want to talk to him over the phone that night, out of all the IMs I had been receiving, he was the only one that caught my attention. Probably because he seemed more real, we had shared interest and... he was attractive of course. Something about the connection we obviously thought we shared kept us on the phone that night for hours and hours and hours... I don't even remember going to sleep that night. Two days later, we met face to face.

Let's Begin...

It was a little about 8 years ago, March 2001. I had taken a trip out to Florida to visit my sisters and scope things out down south. I had just graduated high school a few months before and really hadn't had much planned out. I had an amazing time out there, my sisters showed me around and I got the feel of what it would feel like to live in the Sunshine State.

Two weeks had gone by... and it was time to come home but I wasn't really ready. I made it to the airport just in time to miss my flight. I even thought about turning back and just saying "To hell with everything..." I thought maybe starting a life down there was probably the right thing to do. Three hours later I found myself on the next plane back home. I knew I wasn't ready for that and had to go home to get things straighten out, or rather figure out what it is I wanted to do with my life. I did just that, well sorta.

Another Period of Massive Change!

So here I go again. I got a good year to settle down without any major changes and now here I go again.

- I'm getting married March 14th, 2009 - So there is ALOT of planning going on.

- As of October, I'm moving again...and I have NO IDEA as to where. Hello doors, need to open, please?

- Oh God I have to start packing!!!

- Possibly transferring jobs again or maybe a new job?

- There is a whole lot more but I don't have time to type them. LOL!!!

KaiserCartel - Oh No [Music Video]

Courtney Kaiser and Benjamin Cartel, together are KaiserCartel, a pop girl/boy band from Brooklyn, New York. They have a debut album called March Forth coming out June 10^th on Bluhammock Music (although wouldn't it have been punny if they released it March fourth?)

Their biography lists that Kaiser's early involvement with music was as promoter and also, notably, as John "Cougar" Mellencamp's backing singer. She eventually moved to New York as an elementary music teacher, which is, I am assuming, where she met Cartel, who was also teacher in the NY area.

KaiserCartel - Favorite Song (Minneapolis Version)

It looks like there will be heavy promotion for the new album, with the band already scheduled to appear on local (Minneapolis) station KARE 11 and on the Macy's Day Music. Then they're coming back in a few days to play Bryant Lake Bowl, which is a very tiny, tiny venue.

Apparently this duo loves Minneapolis ("Minneapolis remains our favorite big-small city, and more than anywhere else, a true home-away-from home."), and they even have a "Minneapolis Version" of one of their song, "Favorite Song", appearing on the b-side of Okay... And Other Things We Feel. The mostly Cartel-vocals song is pretty stripped down, compared to the "real" version appearing on their debut album (which features pianos, tambourine, and, what? alarm clock???).

KaiserCartel - Season Song (Live)

Digging around, I noticed that they offered a free song from their 300 limited EP called Live From BreakThru Radio called "Season Song". It sounds fantastic when performed live, I don't know how they do the whisteling part so clearly and on demand.

The studio version of that song (appearing as the second track on their album) sounds much fuller. You can hear the variety of instruments used in this song: xylophone, bass drums, maracas, clapping (!), and tambourine.

Listening to the album, they do a good mix of girl vs boy songs (when I say this, I mean the main vocals). Here is a breakdown:

As you can quickly see, it's a good mix, with the scale tipping in Kaiser's favor. Incidentally, there is a hidden track on the album, which I think is called "Shira", officially there's only 12 tracks.

I just read that the official single and video for their album will be "Oh No". I just got a chance to view it, it shows off the comfortable couple, complete with chairs, water, hands and yarn.

If you like boy/girl sweet melodies folk/pop music, be on the look out for their debut, March Forth on June 10^th, followed by a promotional tour throughout the midwest and the obvious California and New York spots.

ASPARAGUS SEASON SOON TO COME

The asparagus season has already started and we now can find that delicacy in most stores. At the moment, they are imported from Mexico, Peru, Spain or Marocco, but soon we will be able to find our local ones (personally, I prefer regional and seasonal products that are available a lot later)...

This exquisite and versatile vegetable comes in various colors, depending on how long they stayed in contact with the light (photosynthesis). The asparagus which has only stayed in the soil and never saw the light is white. Then, once it's ends start to point out of the soil, it is slightly violet. But, if it stays totally out of the soil (15-20 cm) and is exposed to the rays of the sun, you'll get a green asparagus. While the white ones are very tender and have a light aroma, and the violet ones have a more fruity flavor, the green ones are undoubtedly the most complex in taste and are therefore more popular than the two other kinds.

When you buy asparagus, always choose those which have snappy and firm stems as well as those with tight points. Never take asparagus that have destroyed feet, soft/limp stems and flowering points. All those details are there to tell you that the asparagus which you are about to buy are NOT fresh at all!

It is very interesting to know that this vegetable is calorically poor, rich in fibers, and is a very good source of folate, vitamin A and potassium. It also contains asparagine, an acidic substance which confers it's particular flavor and which is a highly diuretic....

~ Asparagus With Parmesan And Fried Onions ~
Recipe by Rosa @ Rosa's Yummy Yums

Serves 2.

Ingredients:
A bunch (500g) of Green asparagus
1-2 Tbs Melted butter
1 Clove garlic, finely chopped
5-6 Tbs Freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1 Tbs Breadcrumb dressing (optional)
2-3 Tbs Fried onions/shallots
Salt, to taste
Pepper, to taste

Method:
1. Trim the woody ends from the asparagus.
2. Cook the asparagus in simmering water (with a pinch of salt), until tender, but still crisp.
3. Drain and place in a buttered oven dish.
4. Pour over the melted butter.
5. Sprinkle with the chopped garlic, the parmesan, the breadcrumb dressing (optional), then the fried onion/shallots.
6. Salt and pepper to taste.
7. Bake in the preheated oven at 180° C (350° F) for about 15-20 minutes, or until the parmesan is slightly golden in color and has melted.
8. Serve warm.

Remarks:
To test if your asparagus are cooked through, use the tip of a knife.
You could also use some béchamel for this dish. In that case, don't add any butter to the asparagus and pour the mixture before you add the other ingredients.

Serving suggestions:
Serve alone with a salad or as accompaniment to meat or fish (ham, lamb steaks, salmon fillets, tuna steaks, etc...).

letting go

I've been going through some of my old photos, thinking about changing my layout (not significantly it must be said), and i came across this one.

At noon, a small group of senior buddhist monks broke off from the main marches (calling for an end to junta brutality in Burma) to release handfuls of petals into the air. I believe (please correct me if i'm wrong) it was in tribute to the Burmese monks that chose to risk their lives so valiantly in Burma a month earlier (and still do).

It was actually an accident that I was witness to the moment at all - prior to setting off for London, i checked the march itinerary and mistakenly read the beginning to be at the Tate Modern gallery. I duly arrived outside the gallery at shortly before 11am, the time the march was scheduled to begin. Now, the march organisers had requested that all participants wear red, so i was alarmed to see that the number of people wearing red around me was woefully low, and suspiciously similar to the number of red-shirts odinarily present in any random crowd. Furthermore, the crowd in general was very sparse, and there was not a placcard in sight. This contrasted vastly with both my high expectations for such a potent and highly publicised cause and also my experience of past marches (which, even if they were small, would invariably be very obvious).

I began to panic, thinking first that the march had left without me, and later that i had, inexplicably, been the only person in the whole of the UK (including the organisers) to have remembered that the march was today (a thought that i entertained for an embarassingly long time before discarding). Just as I was about to start the march on my own, shouting slogans and waving my red shirt around my head anyway (ok... i'm not that brave - or imaginative - my actual thoughts were far less admirable - they were turning to slinking off dejectedly into the gallery for an hour or so of anti-climactic wandering and then driving the 200 miles home) a lovely lady holding a clipboard and wearing a flourescent jacket came up to me and asked me if i was here for the Burma march. I don't know what drew her to me - was it my uniquely alluring smell? my come-hither eyes? my 'deer facing the headlights' look? or maybe the fact that i was wearing red and looking hugely confused and staring slightly longer than is normal at anyone else in red? who knows what it was. All i know is that she came over to me.

The lady explained to my, increasingly red, face that the march was actually beginning at Tate Britain (a couple of miles up the river), not the Tate Modern (i must confess, i wasn't actually aware that there were two Tates in London). Apparently forseeing that i would be so stupid, the march organisers had kindly placed a couple of helpers at the Tate Modern to direct stragglers to the real march.

Anyways, by this time it was too late to go on the march with everyone else, so i decided (after being told by clipboard lady that it was my best hope) to meet the march at the pre-arranged stop on Westminster (?) Bridge at noon, where the senior monks would be paying their respect.

This turned out to be very fortunate for me, as it meant i got to see the tribute (whereas if i had gone to the correct start point, i'd have missed the tribute) from quite a good vantage point! At the time i didn't realise this however, and for the second time in about twenty minutes, i had to face the possibility that i had missed the march - there i was, standing on the bridge, with a couple of people milling about (that i thought to be stragglers), wearing red. Having come to the disappointing conclusion that i had yet again failed miserably - I decided to watch the river for the time being, hoping that something would come along to make my trip to London not quite so pointless.

Once again, fate came up trumps for me as i saw coming over the hill a small group of marroon-clad monks surrounded by a scrum of media types. My heart leapt! i hadn't missed it, and even more miraculously, i was actually in the right place!

I sat jolly for a while, waiting for noon to come around, and as i did so, the monks were engulfed in a braying pack of media types (every type of journalist you could think of - the public with their camera phones, photographers with their impressive lenses, videographers, pen and paper people and everyone in between). Not being a fan of having my ribs crushed (or crushing other people), i decided to hang back, as i often do when it comes to these things - at the time, my desire to throw myself into the crush was tempered by my sorrow that the monks' private moment for reflection, a moment i imagined to be wonderously peaceful and subtle, would be intruded upon by such a ghastly fact of modern culture. Having chosen to hang back, i felt slightly better about taking photos (in truth, i don't think i could have resisted no matter how hard i tried) - i vowwed to take a minute to watch the petals float by on the water after the event.

My dischord with the media pack wasn't total, i understood that it was good that this historic gesture would be publicised well, (wasn't raising awareness one of the main reasons for making such a gesture?), and one of the reasons i didn't want to go into the pack was that i didn't want to get in the way of the professional's (in addition to being more comfortable away from the pressure zone) photos - it was more important that they should get good images, because theirs would be seen.

Shortly after i got settled on the bridge wall (where i had a *slim* chance of seeing something of the monks in the moment through the scrum around them), noon struck and the petals were released and allowed to float down onto the Thames. It felt really odd at the moment, sounds were muted but there was a huge flurry of activity in the media scrum. Afterwards, there was a warm round of applause for the monks from every watcher, which was really nice.

It was during this time that i took the photo above. I sort of discarded it at the time, because i thought the composition was sort of awkward, with too much sky (which i think, is still true) and i didn't see any cohesion between the media-pack and the monk's hand; but now, looking back, i realise that i really like this image. I think now that the monk's hand is *intimately* connected to the media pack, and there's a real purpose behind both parts of the image - the monk's action is obviously loaded, and so are the press pack's. I like the tension in the scene between the various components and the fact that neither the beautiful gesture nor the brutal mechanics can be iignored, if you want to get the overall picture (no pun intended :)).

International Workers Day, 2008

Okay, so this is a little late, but I just now figured out how to upload photos from my cell phone to my computer. Don't laugh, I am slowly catching up with the rest of civilization. Anyway, these are a couple of photos from last Thursday, ie May Day, ie International Workers Day. I met up with Andrew and a couple of his classmates on Muni, where a large group of SFSU students had swarmed and taken over an entire train.

I'm just glad I knew what was going on, because if I had innocently been taking Muni and all of a sudden a mob of students pounding drums and chanting "Si se puede!" had appeared, I might have found it mildly irritating. But as it was, it was pretty fun to be caught up in the excitement. We (our little group, not the entire mob) stopped in the Castro for a couple of beers before the rally in Dolores Park, and then joined the march to Civic Center before everyone wandered off in different directions. I'm not the most political person, so for me the best part was just being out in the sun. But like I mentioned already it was easy to get caught up in everyone else's enthusiasm, which made the whole thing pretty fun in the end.

5 & 10

With all the press that 5 & 10 gets (best new chef, best restaurant in Atlanta, love from the James Beard Foundation, etc) it's nice to know that it continues to live up to the hype.

The asparagus was tender without being mushy, and the combination of the poached egg yolks and the bacon vinaigrette was even more delightful when I mopped it up with a slice of bread. The scallop special (both as an appetizer and a entree) was fantastic, perfectly cooked with the crispy sauteed tops and silky interiors. The apples helped cut the saltiness of the caviar and the sauce, and the tuft of microgreens proudly played the roll of trendy objet de jour. The frogmore stew, though tasty, needed a smidge more salt. The cava gelee didn't last long, with the two of us elbowing for bites. Think champagne jello shot mixed with fruit, and you've got the idea.

03.31.08 Organic Cotton Set

My sister, Robin, asked that I knit her a pair of pants for a friend of her's new baby and I was thrilled. These were made from Blue Sky Alpaca's Organic Cotton in Sage and Willow colorways. The hat was a sweet little surprise. I'll have to ask for a photo of the newbie wearing the set soon.
