            <title>20 mile hangover</title>

            <description>    &lt;p&gt;Yesterday Anne and I went out...and on our -own- did 20 miles for training. The real plan was only 11, but last week when the plan was 22 we did 10.&amp;#160; We historically flub the suggested training schedule in some way. For the first time I think our plans have changed for other reasons that the flu- our 1st year I got the flu and the 2nd year she did.&amp;#160; As you can only imagine....your body needs to be &amp;#39;just right&amp;#39; to walk anything over 15 miles.&amp;#160; Our 3rd training cycle for a marathon with the Leggers and we have yet to complete the full 26 prior to a race.&amp;#160; (I will continue to support this decision--why walk an entire marathon and not get a medal??)&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We did well the entire 20 miles. We got to Santa Monica an hour early and did a quick 3 mile loop prior to meeting our group. Then we joined the LA marathon group to do 6 miles followed with the Pasadena marathon group for the remaining 5 (although that was only me, Anne, and our leader Harry) THEN headed south again through venice for another 6 miles.&amp;#160; That makes 20, right? :)&amp;#160; I enjoed doing the short segments. It certainly made it feel more manageable and we remained in the area that we know best in Santa Monica/Venice.&amp;#160; Sometimes on the really long walks we get abour 12 miles &amp;#39;out&amp;#39; and don&amp;#39;t really know where we are- only to have to turn around and walk 12 miles back.&amp;#160; (nothing like thinking, CRAP....12 more miles when you feel yucky)&amp;#160; Some highs and lows are to be expected. Luckly, Anne and I ususally flip our high/lows ...I&amp;#39;m not sure how that happens, but it is such a good thing.&amp;#160; She will be full of energy and chatty while I&amp;#39;m ready to keel over...and then the reverse.&amp;#160; We typically stop at the Broadway Deli after our long walks to refuel prior to driving home.&amp;#160; Both of us sat down yesterday and I wasn&amp;#39;t exactly sure we would get up again...but I did want to get home.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;SO....you may (or may not) be wondering what those LOWS actually feel like.&amp;#160; It isn&amp;#39;t like your body hurts any more or less...but your mind starts to go...and for me is usually accompanied with some sort of stomach distress- either nausia or lower GI cramping.&amp;#160; A particularly fun symptom of mine---when I get dehydrated I get more floaters in my vision and blackout spots in my central vision.&amp;#160; (RIGHT, THAT sounds healthy, doesn&amp;#39;t it?!)&amp;#160; And then...I also tend to get a little dizzy.&amp;#160; (lets just put that together: I&amp;#39;m gonna puke, I can&amp;#39;t see straight, and I&amp;#39;m dizzy.....and then Anne is going ON and ON about something that I really REALLY don&amp;#39;t care about right now)&amp;#160; hahha&amp;#160; fun times.&amp;#160; Usually I only feel this way for about 20 minutes and then it all goes away...but that is dependent on WHAT I do about it.&amp;#160; Being my 3rd marathon training, I&amp;#39;ve gotten pretty good about figuring out what my body needs and when.&amp;#160; I realy heavily on Clif Shot Blocks (black cherry flavor with added caffiene), water, and some sort of electrolyte drink...and some pretzels every now and then.&amp;#160; Last year I drank the Gatoraide endurance in orange or lemon lime- what ever they were handing out and it made my race so much better.&amp;#160; My drink of choice is Gookinaide...er, Hydrolite, err....Vitalyte??&amp;#160; They keep chaging its name.&amp;#160; If you google Gookinaide you can find the Vitalyte web page.&amp;#160; It cracks me up to read how it is great for endurance athletes, pregnant women...and hangovers. Well, I suppose each of those is pretty difficult on the body!&amp;#160; I was going on to Amazon to order some and thought I would check out the web page....THEN I read all the articles and thought...HUH, maybe I&amp;quot;m still dehydrated! SO I started drinking some again today.&amp;#160; I&amp;#39;m feeling better...but that could also be from the Claratin and Tylenol I just took as well.&amp;#160; I&amp;#39;m getting some gusto back and even my typing speed has increased from the start of this post.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&amp;#160; The stuff is also incredible when you have a cold or flu.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;No. I don&amp;#39;t really like gatoraide either. WAY too sweet for long training days.&amp;#160; After about 14 miles I want to toss it at someone. I usually dilute the gatoraide passed out at races with water.&amp;#160; The Gookinaide isn&amp;#39;t very sweet. If this sounds like an infomercial...well, maybe it is :) haha (no, I&amp;#39;m getting no $ from them.... just it is GREAT stuff) ....the Fruit Punch flavor is gross. Stick to the orange or citrus.&amp;#160; Santa Claus- you can get me some for Christmas!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I was feeling pretty gross all morning. Yesterday I was over tired and couldn&amp;#39;t settle down and nap- just sat on the couch and was grumbly and in a bad mood. I&amp;#39;m starting to perk up. I did the dishes this AM...that was an endurance event in itself.&amp;#160; A co worker gave me a set of dishes- place setting for 12!!! (in my single small apt)&amp;#160; I only unpacked a set of 6..and sure enough...I managed to go through all 6 before doing the dishes.....the reason why i did NOT unpack all of them!&amp;#160; And I call pulling out the camping dishes and silverware being resourceful....not lazy. haha&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;my kitchen is so clean I barely recognize it.&amp;#160; pumpkin is a little lost. :)&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Moving is stressful and driving from&amp;#160;Wisconsin with&amp;#160;the last of our belongings&amp;#160;this past week has been no exception. It is a relief to finally have my family here with me permanently in South Dakota.&amp;#160; However, I haven&amp;#39;t slept all that well and felt tired all week.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Since running the &lt;a href=&quot;http://ultramarathon.vox.com/library/post/a-nice-sunday-morning-jog.html&quot;&gt;Boulder Backroads marathon &lt;/a&gt;10 days previous, I had only done one short recovery run. I was overdue for another run. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Only&amp;#160;two days before the event, I decided &amp;quot;what the heck&amp;quot; and&amp;#160;&amp;#160;registered for a local marathon held this weekend in the Black Hills.&amp;#160;A long training run would be just what I needed to burn the stress and mental fatigue out... or so I hoped. Not having run much since Boulder, I wasn&amp;#39;t sure how well my legs had recovered. I thought if I took it slow and at my ultramarathon pace, it should be no problem. My only&amp;#160;goal was&amp;#160;to at least&amp;#160;not get beat by any of&amp;#160;the walkers. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.mtrushmoremarathon.com/new/&quot;&gt;Crazy Horse Marathon&lt;/a&gt; is one of two marathons&amp;#160;this weekend, one&amp;#160;begun at the Crazy Horse Monument and the&amp;#160;other at Mt. Rushmore. They both&amp;#160;started at the same time and met at about the half way mark&amp;#160;with the final half run together. I chose&amp;#160;Crazy Horse&amp;#160;because except for&amp;#160;a few miles near Hill&amp;#160;City, most of the race was run on&amp;#160;the George&amp;#160;&amp;#160;Mickelson Trail, the gravel Deerfield Road and a&amp;#160;double track forest service four wheel drive road.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I was amused by the pre-race jitters&amp;#160;that many had. This was only a&amp;#160;training run so I had no jitters at all. In fact, I&amp;#160;was yawning and sleepy.&amp;#160; I&amp;#160;regretted not having&amp;#160;an extra cup of&amp;#160;coffee that morning to help wake me&amp;#160;up.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Many were pacing around, stretching and warming up.&amp;#160;For those planning on starting out fast, I suppose that makes sense.&amp;#160;Myself, I prefer to warm up during the&amp;#160;race itself. After five or ten miles, I am warmed up well enough. I&amp;#160;had contemplated parking at a trail head a couple of miles away and running in&amp;#160;along the George Mickeson Trail just to get&amp;#160;a couple of extra training miles in but thought the better of it. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Had I not run a marathon only&amp;#160;two weeks before, I just might&amp;#160;have done it. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Maybe I will next year?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The race started at 7AM. The sun was rising and cast a golden hue upon the autumn&amp;#160;hills. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We ran about 3 miles along a dirt road towards the base of Crazy Horse&amp;#160;Monument before&amp;#160;turning around. &lt;p&gt;We&amp;#160;connected onto the George Mickelson Trail. The next ten or so miles would be downhill into Hill City. I&amp;#160;blasted down that hill. &lt;p&gt;From Hill City to Deerfield Road, we ran a few miles along the pavement. That sucked. I&amp;#160;am a trail runner to the core. I despise&amp;#160;even the few yards it takes to cross a paved road. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We soon left&amp;#160;the gravel road and turned onto a four-wheel drive forest service double-track. The aspens are in their fall glory. In a week, all the leaves will be down. The Autumn beauty of aspen is beautiful but fleeting. &lt;/p&gt;

As I passed by, I heard&amp;#160;them make&amp;#160;comments to each other about the&amp;#160;fresh cow pies&amp;#160;in the meadow and&amp;#160;about&amp;#160;possibly&amp;#160;twisting an ankle. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Those road runners&amp;#160;don&amp;#39;t get out much, do they?&amp;#160; To bad for them, they&amp;#160;have no idea&amp;#160;what they are missing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I smiled to myself and used the irregular terrain to my advantage.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;Never fast, I am always at a disadvantage on the&amp;#160;flat wide-open road. However, after years of running on trails, I have developed quick and light footwork. &lt;p&gt;Pictured is one of the aid stations. The water and Ultima sports drink was brought in by four-wheeler. It reminded me of an ultramarathon aid station except that there was no real food, only fluids and gel.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I met a gentleman: Tom from Cincinatti. We ran together for a while. He admitted to worrying about twsting or breaking an&amp;#160;ankle. We had a nice conversation,&amp;#160;he is a social worker who works as an advocate for people with epilepsy. &lt;p&gt;Then we came across several signs that made me laugh out loud.&amp;#160; I thought these were&amp;#160;funny but the other runners didn&amp;#39;t think so.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I&amp;#160;stopped and took a few photos. Each sign was&amp;#160;posted by a tire rut or dip in the trail. I guess the race organizers thought it best&amp;#160;to warn the road runners in this event not used to rugged terrain. Perhaps they did so out of liablilty concerns or maybe they were simply being nice?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Feeling good and having run at my slow-ultra pace for&amp;#160;most of the race, I decided to kick it in the last miles. As everyone else was struggling in, I&amp;#160;floated lightly past them.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;It was the same way at Boulder Backroads two weeks earlier, only I didn&amp;#39;t get a gut-ache this time. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I think I will continue to include occasional marathons as part of my training plan, as long as they fit into my schedule and are not on the road. Getting to pass people while still fresh is one reason. I rarely get to do that at ultras. In fact, if I am close enough&amp;#160;to see&amp;#160;someone else ,&amp;#160;more than likely&amp;#160;it is because I have been running with them the last few hours and we&amp;#39;ll end up&amp;#160;finishing together by choice. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The other reason why I&amp;#39;ll continue to do marathons is that as much as I&amp;#160;enjoy the&amp;#160;solitude of my&amp;#160;long solitary training&amp;#160;runs, sometimes it is fun to be around other runners and make new friends and acquaintances.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Lisa introduced me to Larry who is from Houston and a member of the &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.marathonmaniacs.com/areyouamarathonmaniac.html&quot;&gt;Marathon Maniacs&lt;/a&gt;. He ran 93 marathons last year. He was&amp;#160;planning on&amp;#160;running a marathon in Portland the following day.&amp;#160; He also runs ultras and it turns out we have run in several of the same events of the past couple of years. We reminsced about our good and not so good ultra experiences. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Us ultramarathoners are a small and tight-knit group of people. After a while we all get to know each other. We are often misunderstood by non-runners and sometimes even by other runners, but we kinda like it that way. &lt;p&gt;Afterwards, we took a&amp;#160;not-so-short &amp;quot;short cut&amp;quot; back to our cabin. We&amp;#160;took&amp;#160;Hwy&amp;#160;244 south of Hill City&amp;#160;and passed&amp;#160;Mt. Rushmore Monument. Then we took &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Mountain_Road&quot;&gt;Hwy 16A or&amp;#160;the Iron Mountain&amp;#160;Road &lt;/a&gt;and enjoyed the one lane tunnels as well as the famous pig tail bridges.             <description>    &lt;p&gt;just finished watching nino&amp;#39;s marathon drama sp yesterday. yappari!!! sasuga nino!!!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;hats off to nino for another splendid performance..hontou ni subarashi!!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;i knew nino would do well acting his part as an autistic person. i mean, we&amp;#39;ve seen him being dorky in their shows when he&amp;#39;s not in his &amp;quot;bitchy&amp;quot; mode and i thought it didn&amp;#39;t feel like nino was acting at all in this drama...it was like his usual &amp;quot;other&amp;quot; side...lol&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;but seriously he really played the part well. even the way he says his lines, his voice...perfect. i was really at awe with him while watching it. my friends &amp;amp; i agree that nino &amp;amp; ohno were probably the only ones who can pull off the character the best (&lt;del&gt;we can&amp;#39;t imagine the hime playing autistic at all &lt;/del&gt;XD). i never thought i&amp;#39;d find an autistic chooo adorable...hehe!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;and i was even teasing cathy that nino&amp;#39;s legs looked mecha sexy...haha! i think his legs are even prettier than mine! lol&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;i didn&amp;#39;t cry watching it (contrary to what i expected) but it was really a touching &amp;amp; inspiring drama. i&amp;#39;d definitely re-watch it again some time (or whenever i want to flail at nino again XD).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;after watching this, my arashi ranking is messed up again...&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;on the local scene, i&amp;#39;ve watched John Lloyd Cruz &amp;amp; Sarah Geronimo&amp;#39;s movie (A Very Special Love). i don&amp;#39;t usually watch a lot of tagalog movies but since it&amp;#39;s lloydie i wanted to watch it..hehe! he&amp;#39;s one of the few local actors that i like &amp;amp; actually have a crush on. the story&amp;#39;s simple but nice...really a feel good film if i may say so. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;i wish i had a boss as goodlooking as him...hehe!&amp;#160;and since i&amp;#39;m already in flailing mode, let me just say that he looks sooooooo good in this film!!! kyaaa!!!!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;and speaking of sarah, i saw her &amp;amp; howie (yes, the BSB member howie d.) singing in one of the local channels. their duet&amp;#39;s nice. it also kinda has a BSB feel in it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;before their number, some of the hosts did a BSB dance number and howie was saying they did good &amp;amp; it did bring back some memories to him. actually it was a nice &amp;amp; hilarious number..hehe! i really think howie enjoyed how the guys were trying to imitate them...haha!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;and i didn&amp;#39;t know howie was married already!!! uwaaahhh!!! now baby nick&amp;#39;s the only one left who hasn&amp;#39;t tied the know yet...yabai!!! well, realistically speaking they should really be married by now. i mean they&amp;#39;re already in their 30&amp;#39;s right?&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Marathons are definitely different than ultras. For one, they are much larger. This race was small&amp;#160;compared to&amp;#160;the larger more&amp;#160;popular marathons: 1656 half marathon finishers and 405 for the marathon.&amp;#160;In comparision,&amp;#160;if I go to an ultra with more than 200 runners, that is a lot. I was even impressed&amp;#160;by the number of porta-potties. I would have taken a picture to post here but my camera decided to&amp;#160;not&amp;#160;work that morning. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;OK, so I don&amp;#39;t get out much.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We picked up our packets the afternoon before and enjoyed a meal at Sherpas in Boulder. Mmmm.... good food!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We arrived early&amp;#160;Sunday morning after a meal of &lt;a href=&quot;http://haliku.vox.com/library/post/this-runners-favorite-food-pancakes.html&quot;&gt;Haliku&amp;#39;s secret recipe sour milk pancakes&lt;/a&gt;. Delicious! The sun slowly rose and bathed the Front Range in warm golden hues. The marathon began an hour before the half which was great. This&amp;#160;minimized us having to deal the the half-marathon pack. Most of the race&amp;#160;was&amp;#160;run on gravel/dirt back roads passing green hayfields, horse pastures, ranches and hundred-plus year old cottonwoods. Had this race not been on such a soft&amp;#160;surface, I probably would not have run it. Pavement sucks.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The pack soon spread out as we each found our pace. Early on, it was difficult to not get caught up in the pack and start out too fast just as later it was difficult to not instinctively fall back to my effortless&amp;#160;run-all-day-and-all-night ultra pace. I didn&amp;#39;t want to race&amp;#160; but on the other hand, I did not want to&amp;#160;slog at my 50+ mile pace. That would be wimping out. According to race prediction calculators, a 5 hour marathon finish translates to a just less than&amp;#160;28 hour 100 mile finish, if you did all of the other essential&amp;#160;training. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Another difference I noticed between ultras and regular marathons, is that the runners are less conversant. Not because they are unfriendly but simply&amp;#160;because they are running at a relatively faster pace. This is a short race after all.&lt;/p&gt;

He ran a 3:15 marathon in Utah the day before and was running a 5 hours&amp;#160;Boulder marathon as his recovery run. We discussed&amp;#160;ultra race tactics and he asked me many&amp;#160;questions about blister prevention, nutrition and other topics. I lost a few minutes talking to him but it was worth it. I am sure he will kick butt&amp;#160;at his upcoming ultra and I told him so.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;At mile 20, I decided to pick up the pace.&amp;#160;I was feeling good and a&amp;#160; fast finish long run is good training.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Another difference between ultras and traditional&amp;#160;marathons: I get to pass people... lots of them. In ultras, the pack separates out and other runners are few and far between. Often if there is someone running&amp;#160;a similar pace as you are, you stick together, especially if it is dark, for safety and support. I am&amp;#160;usually not competitive&amp;#160;when I run my ultras, my only goal&amp;#160;is to finish. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Ultrarunners are proud to say: &amp;quot;we run &lt;em&gt;with&lt;/em&gt; others, not &lt;em&gt;against&lt;/em&gt; them.&amp;quot; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;However, I have to confess: on that day, and that morning, I really enjoyed jogging past others who were&amp;#160;slowing down. I wasn&amp;#39;t going fast at all, they were just slowing down. As the&amp;#160;finish&amp;#160;approached,&amp;#160;I looked ahead eagerly toward the next potential&amp;#160;runner I might be able to pass. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I even shouted words of encouragement: &amp;quot;We&amp;#39;re almost there!&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;C&amp;#39;mon let&amp;#39;s speed up!&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;Lookin&amp;#39; good, it&amp;#39;s not far now!&amp;quot;&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Then a strange thing happened. Only&amp;#160;a couple of miles from the finish line, I&amp;#160;got a sharp knife-like cramp in my&amp;#160;lower gut. It was not the upper abdomen stitches&amp;#160;I have gotten before. No, this was different. If I slowed down, it went away but if I tried to run faster than a 10&amp;#160;min/mile, it came back.&amp;#160;Odd.&amp;#160; I guess that is what I deserve for getting cocky. &amp;#160;&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This being only a training run and&amp;#160;not an important event, I decided to&amp;#160;back off. Honestly, I was afraid if I didn&amp;#39;t, I might just&amp;#160;end up pooping my pants.That was the kind of cramp I was having.&amp;#160; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Now I&amp;#160;know why there were so many porta-potties!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I finished in 5:07, a few minutes longer than I planned. No problem. It still was faster than my 50 or 100 mile ultra pace. For a couple of days afterwards I had some soreness but only as I would expect after a good workout, nothing signifying an injury or that I had overdid it. But this is what I expected,&amp;#160;after all I had only jogged &amp;quot;half&amp;quot;&amp;#160; a race!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I have toyed with the idea of running the Crazy Horse Marathon here in the Black Hills next week. However, it will be the weekend right after I finally move my family from Wisconsin to be out here with me in South Dakota. I don&amp;#39;t know if it will work out or not, I need to spend time with them. However, if there happen to be open spots and they allow race day registration, maybe I&amp;#39;ll decide at the last minute. Otherwise, there is always next year.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Even though I have no interest in&amp;#160;racing marathons for time or PRs, I have to admit that they do make great training runs. &lt;p&gt;This coming weekend I&amp;#39;ll&amp;#160; be down in Denver and decided to run the &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.boulderbackroads.com/&quot;&gt;Boulder Backroads Marathon &lt;/a&gt;with &lt;a href=&quot;http://haliku.vox.com/&quot;&gt;Haliku&lt;/a&gt; on Sunday September 21st. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Having just run a 64.5 mile DNF at Lean Horse a few weeks ago, I&amp;#39;m not concerned about my endurance at all. However, my main question is how in the heck am I supposed to&amp;#160;pace myself for a short race? It would be easy to just slog (slow-jog) it out at my 50 or 100 mile pace. But that would be completely wimping out.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;My greatest challenge will be to not unconsciously fall back to my ultra-slow easy-slogging pace of 12 min/mile or slower after mile 18 or 20 as if I were running 50+ miles instead of 26.2. If you train and practice at a slow pace then you will race at that pace too. Although this marathon will be only for &amp;quot;fun,&amp;quot; I&amp;#39;d like to push it a little faster than I might on one of my usual long extra-slow training runs. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Because I have never done a previous road marathon to use as comparison,&amp;#160;last week I did a marathon time predictor work out: &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/rununiv/marathonpredictors.htm&quot;&gt;Yasso 800s&lt;/a&gt;. These were popularized a few years ago by a &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-244-255-624-0,00.html&quot;&gt;writer for&amp;#160;Runner&amp;#39;s World magazine&lt;/a&gt;. They have always been a difficult workout for me. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I must confess: I absolutely HATE intervals.... half&amp;#160; mile.... one mile...it doesn&amp;#39;t matter- I HATE &amp;#39;em all! &lt;span style=&quot;FONT-SIZE: 12pt; FONT-FAMILY: &amp;#39;Times New Roman&amp;#39;,&amp;#39;serif&amp;#39;; mso-fareast-font-family: &amp;#39;Times New Roman&amp;#39;; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA&quot;&gt;&lt;/span&gt;But&amp;#160; l do understand their importance in maximizing cruising speed.&amp;#160; Even after only&amp;#160;two or three interval workouts, I already note an increased rate of leg turnover.&amp;#160; They are effective but I still hate&amp;#39;em. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;My average time for these 10 x&amp;#160;800 intervals was 4:17 minutes&amp;#160;and&amp;#160; I actually sped up on each of the the last three intervals to&amp;#160;3:44&amp;#160;minutes for the last one. Not fast for a speedy short distance runner but it was plenty fast for me. This average&amp;#160;time predicts my &lt;em&gt;potential&lt;/em&gt; marathon time as 4 hours and 17 minutes. Of course,&amp;#160;Yasso 800s are&amp;#160;only a predictor to give us a general&amp;#160;ball park estimate of what&amp;#160;we &lt;em&gt;might&lt;/em&gt; be able to accomplish with proper training and good running conditions.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A prediction of possibly doing a marathon in&amp;#160;under 4&amp;#160;and a half hours&amp;#160;actually surprised me given the usual extremely-slow ultra-slogging pace&amp;#160;that I run my&amp;#160;50+ mile races.&amp;#160;Because I will be running this marathon for fun and have no interest in a PR, I think that trying to run it under 5 hours should be a very reasonable goal.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;However,&amp;#160;it will be a PR for me&amp;#160;no matter how long it takes, given that this will be the first official&amp;#160;road marathon I have ever run. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Using other &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.scrunners.org/calculator.php?hrs=28&amp;amp;min=0&amp;amp;sec=0&amp;amp;distance=100&amp;amp;units=1&amp;amp;Submit=Calculate&quot;&gt;time predictor calculators&lt;/a&gt;, doing a 26.2 marathon in&amp;#160;under 5 hours translates&amp;#160;to a potential&amp;#160;100 mile finish around 28 hours- as long as I did all of&amp;#160;the necessary other&amp;#160;training, of course.&amp;#160; With&amp;#160;another ultra coming up in Mid-November, the last thing I want to do is be stupid&amp;#160;and injure myself simply because I worried about too much my time and pushed myself too hard.&amp;#160; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I got a massage Friday and feel great. There were a lot of tight spots and adhesions that I didn&amp;#39;t even know about. Stretching is fine but sometimes manual terapy is just what is needed. This was the first time I&amp;#160;tried this&amp;#160;massage therapist; however she was absolutely&amp;#160;wonderful and I will certainly be back. My ITBs were tighter and&amp;#160;more tender than I realized but they are better now. I think that getting a massage at least&amp;#160;once a month during the racing season would be a good goal.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;She said&amp;#160;that my legs were very&amp;#160;interesting to work on because&amp;#160;I have&amp;#160;muscle development that she does not&amp;#160;normally see, even in other&amp;#160;runners.&amp;#160;I wish that&amp;#160;such muscle development also&amp;#160;translated into&amp;#160;faster finishing times for my ultramarathons but that&amp;#39;s OK, I am completely fine with simply being able to finish.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I just learned this morning that on October 4th there will be a local marathon, the &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.monumentalchallenge.com/new/&quot;&gt;Crazy Horse Marathon &lt;/a&gt;run&amp;#160;on some of the trails I frequently train on. There actually will be two marathons: Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore which start at either of the monuments but finish at the same park in Hill City. I wonder why I wasn&amp;#39;t aware of this before? I suppose it must be because we ultramarathoners are in a different world than marathoners. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Hmmm... I think I will see how Boulder goes first. This marathon will be only two weeks&amp;#160;later.&amp;#160;As long as I don&amp;#39;t do Boulder too hard, Crazy Horse could be another nice long training run&amp;#160;for me. &amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I have heard many explanations for why us ultrarunners do what we do. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Some of us have moved up in distance because we seek a challenge beyond PBs, pace and time. Others, like me, were never fast to begin with but we are too stubborn (or too dumb?) to mind&amp;#160;going all day and into the night. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;For many, if not most of us, ultrarunning is not just about the running. It is not about the&amp;#160;buckles or the finish times. No, it&amp;#160;is about the spirit and the community, it is about being amongst other like-minded individuals striving for the same goal. It is about running &lt;em&gt;with&lt;/em&gt; and not &lt;em&gt;against&lt;/em&gt; others. It is not only about answering questions such as&amp;#160;&amp;quot;&lt;em&gt;what was our time?&amp;quot; &lt;/em&gt;but also&amp;#160;about discovering &amp;quot;&lt;em&gt;what kind of time did we have?&amp;quot; &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Ultrarunning has become a spiritual endeavor and an all-consuming passion for a lot of us. Going long puts all things into perspective... everything that is superficial and unimportant falls away... Our family, friends and other loved ones, our happiness and our health: these are the&amp;#160;things that truly matter in life. We&amp;#160;retain this mindset&amp;#160;even when&amp;#160;we are not actually&amp;#160;running. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And yes, one side benefit of so much running is that it&amp;#160;also allows us to eat whatever we want whenever we want! &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;And&amp;#160;I&amp;#160;LOVE to&amp;#160;eat!&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When asked by non-running friends and family or even some other runners why do we do what we do, many of us reply with the mountain climbers adage and variations: &amp;quot;Because it is there&amp;quot; and &amp;quot;Because we can.&amp;quot; But I read a recent article in &lt;em&gt;Ultrarunning&lt;/em&gt; magazine taking this one step further, &amp;quot;We do it because we can.... and also&amp;#160;because we can fail.&amp;quot; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Most ultrarunners are successful people in their personal and professional lives. So&amp;#160;why do we&amp;#160;choose an activity with such a high chance of failure?&amp;#160; Why don&amp;#39;t we choose golf or something else easier and&amp;#160;more socially acceptable?&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;We chose ultrarunning precisely because it is so&amp;#160;difficult. Precisely because&amp;#160;the odds for success seem unlikely... humanly impossible even.... and because the odds of&amp;#160;failure&amp;#160;are so high. The outcome of any race is never a given... until you finally run, walk, shuffle or crawl across that finish line. Even the elite sometimes stumble, make mistakes and DNF. They too&amp;#160;are mortals, just like all&amp;#160;the rest of us. Amazing and unbelievable mortals they are,&amp;#160;but still human. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;With great&amp;#160;effort&amp;#160;comes great rewards, but also&amp;#160;risk&amp;#160;of failure.&amp;#160; No one ever said that&amp;#160;ultrarunning is easy. If&amp;#160;it were, everyone would be doing it.&amp;#160;&lt;/p&gt;
