Drugstore Makeovers

Unlike a lot of women, I tend to be a fashion blivet. Rarely if ever am I tempted by the latest trends, and if the truth is known they're usually not all that trendy anymore by the time I even realize they're out there. If my mental radar IS in tune with "what people are wearing," I'm usually thinking something like "now, WHY would you wear a pair of jeans that give you back fat and exposed butt cleavage on purpose?" rather than joining in.

But while fashion has always evaded me, I used to be the girliest of girls when it came to makeup. From my teenage years on, I loved collecting vast quantities of eye shadows and liners, blushes and lipstick and experimenting with myself and my friends.

I'd try to find the best combos for the season or whatever I was wearing. I'd challenge myself to using my "face kit" to create the most understated, or professional, or goth, or rocker chick look possible. Half the time I'd never even leave the house wearing what I'd slapped on, it was just fun to play.

Come to think of it, I've always been fascinated with putting colors to some sort of canvas - living or otherwise - and seeing what I can do with them. In my teens and then again in my 20's, I went through stages of fancying myself an oil painter. I guess I WAS an oil painter - just a very average one. Remember the guy who did the oil painting TV show - the one with the fuzzy hair who would show you how to paint "happy little trees" and sunsets and mountains and lakes? I used to LOVE watching him and then trying to play around with my own paints.

Anyway, this week I was thinking about how busy my life has become - primarily due to work insanity but also because of the revamped exercise routine - and I realized I don't have many creative outlets in my life at the moment. I haven't even READ much lately, because when I do have downtime I tend to be glued to the political and economic news scene instead of having my nose buried in a piece of fiction. That got me thinking about all the time I used to spend writing, and reading, and then I delved farther back into my memory and recalled my oil paints, and even my makeup fiascos.

It dawned on me that after years of experimenting with my face, I have pretty much worn the same brands and shades of eye shadow, blush, etc since I was in my early 30's. I've gotten ... boring.

Well, there's not much I can do about the lack of spare time these days. Work is only going to get worse between now and March. All the writing I do FOR work leaves me with creative-writer's constipation, if you will. And I sure don't have time at the moment to take up the oil paints again. Besides, the happy-tree guy is gone, and he was my mentor.

So while out picking up a few things one night this week, I bought some new makeup. I picked all sorts of colors I haven't played with in a while. And yesterday, I went to work with a slightly new look.

It felt good to get out of the rut I'm in for a bit, like a breath of fresh air. It isn't exactly being an artist or a writer, but it gives me a few minutes of fun each morning.

As long as I don't decide to go goth or Ozzy Osbourne for work, I guess that's a good thing!

I am having the worst time figuring out eyeshadow colors. I keep buying and buying and nothing seems to make me as happy as this old color I used to wear. I hope it isn't a color that is toxic or something..... cross your fingers for me blog world. Someday I will find another.

Latest Love

It may seem strange to love an inanimate object- but this does happen all the time. Here is this weeks love list:

Sue C. has been wanting a new lipstick. On a recent visit to Loose Lips NY, she decided to purchase our lipstick in Heart Throb, a deep plum color, and perfect for this fall. She was seen shortly after wearing it with a coat of Hint of Mint Lip Gloss in Sugar Plum over it. She just loves it.

Speaking of Hint of Mint Lip Gloss, Christina’s daughter Jill begged her mother for more gloss in Mint Baby Doll. Perfect for teens. They love the minty scent. Jill was also seen afterwards, looking adorable with this light gloss on. She told me she loves it.

The Blog Beauty in Real Life just blogged about Loose Lips NY. They love the bronzer/blush duo in Too Fabulous. They also loved the Professional Blender brush to apply.

Wore my Michael Kors Rain Boots on Friday. Yes, they were from last year. I do love them. They are in style, in great condition and are functional to “boot”. Speaking of boot- We will be talking with Eileen Lewis, the Director of Fashion Strategy at Zappos on our pod cast Friday October 10^th at 2pm EST. Stay tuned for further details. We are very excited. Who doesn’t love shoes?

And speaking of my gal pal Eb, from Make me Over Eb, she has been loving the Knockout Lip Gel. She is now selling some of the Loose Lips NY line in South Carolina. She said the ladies down there also love this color gloss. She loves that it really stays on. She even sent me a picture of her wearing it. Make mental note to post picture!

Let me note a first. I purchased a “Chanel” inspired clutch recently. What I loved about it was the size of it. When going with girlfriends for a night out- you need your keys, wallet, mints, lipstick, and cell phone, etc.- you get the picture. Well you need room. When going out with the hubby, all you might need is your phone, gloss and a piece of gum- so you can wear a small little bag. My friend Robin actually purchased the same bag as me. I actually bought it first- this is history!

Well, that is the week of love!

If you haven't discovered him yet, get on it! I found Josh (aka Petrilude) on YouTube, and I've been watching his videos for a while now. This is a man who knows his craft, and continually flexes his artistic muscle over and over again. On top of that he's just this amazing, charismatic personality.. so yes, I'm a bit of a fan. :D

Smokey Eyes or Smoky Eyes Make-up Tips!

I’ve always adored the smokey eye look. It is so sexy and dramatic, mostly used for the night look. However, if done in lighter shades and not heavy layering, it can still be appropriate for the day.

Like yourself, I have searched the net for hours when trying to learn on how to get the smokey eye look. Found tons of video tutorials and read many instructions on how to create the look. Many of them were way too long and complicated, stating that you need about 20 make up tools to create the look. Obviously, it’s quite useful to have all those tools and colors, however, you can still create the same look by using your basic brushes, sponges, and colors. What I decided to do is create a 3 minute easy-breezy tutorial, that will create the perfect smokey eye look that can be used by make up challenged people such as myself!

I was browsing my youtube subscriptions, when I came across one of Debbie's videos with swatches of Pure Luxe mineral eyeshadows. The photos were absolutely gorgeous, and so I headed over to the website and started looking through their selection.. which is massive!

Between what caught my eye on the video, plus my own preferences.. I ended up with a list of 40 shadows! LOL - yes, I have an eyeshadow addiction. However, what I love is that they offer sample sizes in 2g jars for $1 (USD)! There are few shades that are $2 - but still, that's a great deal since I don't tend to use much when applying loose shadows. Yes, 40 shadows seems like a lot, but for about $50 all in with shipping.. that's a lot of product for the price. Now all that's left to do is to look up some more reviews on the line, and then when it checks out.. it's time to buy.

And then.. dun dun dun..

..I checked Twitter. Only to find out that one of the recent updates on Temptalia is for the new releases from MAC. The website has the Emanuel Ungaro collection available, plus the Halloween face charts AND coming soon photos of some of the holiday sets. I saw the three brush sets, the lip & eye compacts and the Adoring Carmine lip/gloss sets.

Admittedly, I'm surprised. I thought I'd be lusting after more. As it stands, I'm only interested in one of the brush sets, the neutral lip set (Adoring Carmine), maybe the smoky eye compact.. maybe. That will change when the lip/pigment sets are released. ;)

At least for a moment today I was able to feel like I found a good deal, but now my wallet is doing some pre-emptive wailing.

A first..

A while back, I picked up samples from the Overrich pigment collection. While I do enjoy all of them, I fell hard for Blonde's Gold. So hard in fact, that I actually went back and bought the full size. The story thus far is all well and good, but when I opened it for the first time the other day I was shocked. It looked like there was about 1/4 missing!

I do know that pigments are sold by weight, and I have heard people talk about receiving jars that are less than full. My experience so far has been that the matte formulations 'drop', but even my last pro pigment was full up to the brim.

I'm going to call the counter today to inquire, to see if any of the others were so low.. and if not, I'll be running over today or tomorrow for an exchange.
