Do you feel compelled to buy something whenever you go out?

Can’t you walk out of a shop without buying anything? Are you unable to control your impulse to shop? Then, you might be a victim of shopaholism or compulsive shopping disorder.

Call it oniomania or shopaholism or compulsive shopping disorder more numbers of people are becoming victims to shopping addiction and end up spending their hard earned money recklessly. Retailers are thriving on the shopping sprees of these addicts and credit card companies are making explosive profits too.

Be it the teenagers or homemakers’ shopping has become a favorite pastime for many. Shopping makes them feel good, relieves them of their tension and stress and revives their spirit. Many people even believe that, it is shopping that can bring back the smile onto their gloomy faces.

For some compulsive shopping is a disorder, the moment they enter a shop they are compelled to buy something irrespective of whether they really need it or not. Beg, borrow or steal-these people must buy something or else they will become restless.

When we go out, some attractive item in a shop might draw our attention and we will have an urging impulse to buy it. We use our discretion and assess several things like its purpose, its price etc before buying it. Shopping addicts overlook such things and keeping buying whatever they see only to be burdened by moral guilt, debts and financial loss later.

Identifying a shopping addict is relatively easy when compared to other kinds of addictions. You might be a shopping addict if you have these symptoms:

§ You buy things which you really don’t need.

§ You buy things without caring for its price or purpose.

§ You buy things but you will never use them.

§ You buy things just to make yourself happy.

§ You are always haunted by the urge to shop whenever you go out.

§ You feel restless unless and until you buy something.

Shopping addiction can lead to disastrous consequences like-emotional guilt, financial loss and impaired relations. Some Tips to minimize the ill-effects of shopaholism are:

§ Go for shopping only when you ‘really’ need to buy something or ask somebody else to get that item for you. Don’t accompany your friends to a shop when you don’t need anything for yourself.

§ Stop the habit of ‘window shopping’. Most people usually go for window shopping and end up buying things.

§ Draw a budget plan before you go to a shop and stick to it. Do not carry extra cash with you.

§ Never shop beyond the credit limit of your card. Don’t take debts from your family or friends for buying things.

§ Divert your attention when you are bothered by shopping impulse. Try reading a book, taking a shower, watching a movie etc.

When you realize that you have become a victim of shopaholism admit it and seek professional help to get rid off it.

still recovering from the jet-lag after managing to be up for a straight 30 hours, i have been having a nice time getting situated to the future life here in london. although for a short period of time for the present moment (see above title), i told boBo earlier today whilst shopping for some much needed winter gear (ya know, hats, gloves, the whole kit and kaboodle) that this move feels just right. everything is up in the air. no job, no place to call our own, no idea what exactly we will be doing here. but the inner sensation, the gut, tells me that this is good. it is, as they say in california land, all good.

This was my first day off since LAST Friday. If I wasn't off tomorrow too I'd murder Cindy.

I apologize for being a little out of it right now. After all of my healthy eating recently, the sugar, salt, and chemicals I loaded up on today are making me a bit loopy... since my body's not used to them anymore.

Sometimes I wonder what my life would be like if this or that happened to be different.

If I'd never gone through hell with Chelsea, would I still trust people?

Or have ever become such a good poet?

If I hadn't tried to use Bridget as a stairway to popularity in seventh grade and seen into "their" world, how long would I have wanted to be friends with the popular girls before realizing what they were really like?

If I wasn't shy growing up, would I be a partying slut?

Would that be as fun as it looks... if it wasn't so empty?

Do I just wonder about that because I feel like I was deprived of the whole "dating" part of life, like I just... picked a husband?

As glad as I am to have been handed the most beautiful flower, I feel like I missed my chance to walk through the field.

If I'd met Cameron before I quit being shallow, would I have even given him the time of day?

If I'd never met him, how much longer would I have survived alone?

If I lost him, what would become of me?

What would I be like if I'd had a father?

Or if I'd never met the sad creature that claims to be mine?

Or if I didn't spend my whole life wishing I had something... money to get what I need, people to be close to who care, something to make me feel like my time here is worth anything.

Will I ever feel secure enough to risk having children?

Will I ever look at sex as not being a terrifying risk?

Will I ever stop having pimples?

Who's driving me to work on Sunday?

If slicing meat is how I earn my living, what is my life?

The two days a week I spend typing journals and waiting for Cameron to fit me into his schedule?

I need a car.

Ugh.

I played my clarinet today.

It was the first time in five years.

I showed my mom the biggest spider I've ever seen in my yard today.

She killed it.

Cá estou eu numa tarde sem grande coisa para fazer. De manhã tive uma workshop sobre safety & health regulations. Foi interessante, mas confesso que no fim já estava a morrer de sono... Felizmente acabou ao meio-dia e eu vim-me embora.

Tinha em mente juntar-me aos meus colegas do DTC para podermos decidir qualquer coisa entre nós e tirar dúvidas sobre aquilo que amanhã temos de decidir. Mas ninguém se ofereceu, queriam todos para "mais tarde" e acabou por ficar para amanhã.

Confesso que isto deixa-me preocupada, pois eu acho que seria mais útil termos uma meeting com os professores que sugeriram os projectos, ou seus representantes e só depois é que poderíamos ter capacidade decisiva sobre a questão. No entanto, já me disseram "no stress!"

Com a mudança de casa, arranjar tempo para me sentar a mandar emails aos profs também não tive lá muito... acabei por deixar para hoje, mas hoje acho que não faz lá muito sentido se amanhã vamos ter a tal meeting.

Fabrico de Nanopartículas?

Em termos de housemates: confesso que ontem a reunião de decisões do plano de limpezas da casa até correu bem. O problema começou quando eu sugeri ligar o aquecimento de vez em quando [a noite passada ia congelando, e acho que tenho as pernas doridas de tão encolhida que andava a dormir... já comprei um edredon de 10.5 tog!]. A housemate inglesa disse que ganha pouco por mês e por isso precisa da guita e preferia passar frio.

CREDO!

eu cá não quero saber, nem que eu pague a conta dela!! mas frio é coisa que não quero passar mesmo!!

How many times do we have to go thru this?

Well, now that the government is really taking over, buying investment companies, homes from financial banks, bailing out homeowners who never learned the phrase, "If it sounds to good to be true", helping disaster victims, watching city, state and federal taxes always growing in one form or another, food prices sky-high, gas outrageous. Well, back in 1973, we had the "gas shortage, and a beef strike. Who else remembers the "odd/even" days to get a tank of gas. Seeing very little beef in the markets was horrible. I was pregnant with my second then, and hubby was in the Navy on a ship across the Atlantic.

From that is where I finally got it. From that year on, we began reducing our debt. When hubby got out of the Navy and was sailing as a Merchant sailor, we bought a house in Washington state. One we "could afford". Raised 3 kids and I learned everything I could about cooking, gardening and canning. We never had a "newer" vehicle, or vacations except for "stay vacations" in our town. No frills. When I began to take care of my mother, we decided to move in with her to care for her, we sold our house in Washington to our youngest who was 30 then. We took a loss so he could afford the place. Now that Mother has passed, yes I inherited this little house that I grew up in. It's only my second house ever.

Today, hubby and I have NO debt, no mortgage, and we are kind of put down for it. Now, even without debt we have to budget and watch our pennies too. That's not fair! We didn't get help with our mortgage or debts. But, now we are suppose to shell out for others to keep their homes? We are suppose to shell out to get things moving in the economy? I am so tired of the "whiners" who just want someone to "bail" them out. If I had my way, most would lose their over-inflated, bloated price homes. People really have to learn to live within their means. Use cash for large purchases.

My childhood home is 70 years old. We upgraded it last year using inheritance to make sure this 2 bedroom, one bath home is up to code. After all what good is your home if the basics is crap. We didn't have to have the giant plasma screens, or the latest i-phones, or the huge monster SUV.

I plan on "living well" thru this. Cooking and relaxing because I can. Just quit taking my money for yourselves. In fact there is a quote I like.

It was former U.S President Calvin Coolidge who said, “There is no dignity quite so impressive, and no one independence quite so important, as living within your means.”

Guess what, he was right!

Lodge Update

This house is going awesome right now. It was tough the last couple weeks because we lost two roommates within a week of eachother. But now Matt has moved in and we cleaned everything. We went over to Matt's to pick up his stuff and he pretty much fit everything in 2 small crumpler bags and a backpack. He really doesn't have much to his name. He also only brought the bear essentials. All his kind of fun stuff he left back at his house and he wants to slowly move that stuff in. The first thing he did was hang up a Naruto poster in his and Chris's room. Chris is not a fan and has a lot of other posters up all over his room. Matt really likes that naruto stuff and other cartoons like it. He also is a big Dragon Ball Z fan. Chris doesn't like any of that stuff so watching how their room goes will be interesting. We bought Matt a funny welcome to the house present too. It was a T shirt that says "WELCOME!" and has a big fat bunny smiling at him. My sister has clothes like this but I've never seen it on a guy. Its something he can always remember us by, even though he will be living with us. I see the future of all of us interacting like a sit com. Really weird stuff happens to us and our reactions are typically not ordinary. Stay tuned for the next episode, same Lodge time, same Lodge channel.

Acting on your beliefs

A point wants to come out of me in these rather compressed times (I
am doing the final packing for the move tomorrow); it is not even a
fully formed idea. It's something that peeks from inside for a second
and you think you got it, then you don't know what to do next and
then start to doubt whether it was a fully-formed thought in the first
place. But here it is.

If people would manifest the beliefs they say they believe, or that
they think they believe, things would be very different, their lives
would be very different.

When people do not act on their beliefs, they either do not believe,
or they are weak, craven, insecure, in need of help.

Conclusions:

Most people do not really believe in anything.

Most people need help.

Since no man is an island, societies that do not support individuals
to have beliefs, passed-on or self-made, and to manifest these
beliefs are pointless societies.

(Beliefs must be acceptable to the societies concerned.)

(West)End Times

Having finally achieved a somewhat normal daily routine, gotten everything to work and having met old friends that I've finally been able to catch up with, I've finally had some time to survey and get in touch with my surroundings, as well.

No longer feeling crippled because the washing machine makes funny noises or by the fact that the local park looks like a scene from Hitchcock's Birds due to the incredible amount of nesting Canada Geese ( as well as the stupefying amount of birdshit everywhere), I've gotten over what scientists call the Negotiation Phase of culture shock and have achieved some sort of personal acceptance of my surroundings; in short, everything's peachy - more or less.

Being a busy capital as it is, Helsinki's can amount to quite the hustle and bustle of a modern metropolis; there are people, cars and high rises all around, and everyone seems to be in a hurry somewhere. "Where" I don't know, maybe everyone just keeps forgetting the stove on or something or they like jogging in suits, but either way, loads of running.

I, however, technically don't live in Helsinki myself, since I live on the outskirts of Helsinki Major, in a much more quaint area generally known as Tapiola. Unlike Helsinki itself, Tapiola ( and it's neighboring district, the Westend) is a much less stressed out area, populated by well-to-do old people and their accompanying villas and mansions, with good services and easy access to central Helsinki thanks to the freeway that whizzes by just out of hearing range.

Me? I live in an apartment block.

But that's not to say I'd be living without the benefits of living in Tapiola just because I'm dirt poor; the apartment block I live in was built somewhere in the mid 50's by world renowned architect Alvar Aalto, which means that not only does the building look like someone designed it on crack, but the lovely orange paint on the walls and doors of the stairwell is a cultural heritage, meaning that even if it looks horrendous now, people fifty years from now will not be bereft of feeling the same kind of nausea as I do, every single morning I step out of the apartment ( whenever it's not because of a hangover, that is).

Tapiola also has a very good local center, housing not one but two high-end malls nicely tucked away in avantgarde-constructions, five banks within a 100m stretch and some very good restaurants - not that I've been able to afford going to any of them, but I hear the food's wonderful. A point of irony would be noting that the local deli is in fact cheaper than the local supermarket when it comes to basic necessities ( and they sell llama).

The amount of clothing stores in the center is also quite surprising; bearing in mind that most local centra generally tend to have one or two supermarkets, one bank and perhaps a shoe store, Tapiola boasts with not only high fashion boutiques, but also considerably cheaper ( yet still quite fetching) stores for "those younger people". The fact that there are stores like these there should probably be credited to the fact that my univeristy's just a few klicks away, otherwise they probably wouldn't be caught dead selling H&M.

I have to admit, though, that the only thing that doesn't really fit in is me. Walking around the wives and kids of big business execs and such in scruffy clothes and a shirt that seriously needs ironing must make me a complete eyesore.

Either that, or they just don't notice me - strenghtened by the fact that, whenever an old lady walks into me, I'll be damned if they even look your way in a slight manner of apology. But at least you don't have to hear them saying "***** kids" whenever you bump into them by accident; it's quite refreshing to instead hear them say "Do you have any idea who my husband is??"

No ma'am, but I'll be sure to tell him what a wonderful choice he made back in the day when he decided to marry you.

But don't get me wrong; I love living here. There's hardly no crime rate, there are more parks than parking lots here, and even the junkies are friendly. There are lots of nice cars to look at, and whenever the old folks have their daughters flown in from France and Italy over for dinner and champagne, there're lot's of other nice things to gawk at.

And as soon as they lift the ban on hunting Canada geese, I'm getting a shotgun.

The gangbangers tagging up the wall are really hired artists commissioned to paint a beautiful mural.

The littered alleys are yellow brick roads lined with Jacaranda trees.

The sirens from the firetrucks, ambulances, and police cars are church bells tolling 12 o'clock.

The prostitutes standing on the corners are picturesque statues from the Roman Empire.

The bad kids throwing rocks at the cars in the parking lot are well refined children playing croquet on the lawn.

As I can't lay in my bed any longer, I open my eyes and everything was what it really is.
