            <description>    &lt;p&gt;One of the most perplexing problems in the field of anthropology over
the last hundred years has been the relationship between language and
culture. Does language shape culture? Does culture shape language?
Further, and perhaps more interesting, does language shape our
cognition, effecting the very way that we see the world? Similarly,
does culture shape our language in such a way that the very words,
concepts, and semantic structures within a language are the direct
result of the culture’s physical manifestation? These questions and
many others have been the subject of debate within anthropology,
linguistics, psychology, and other fields of inquiry for well over a
century. Out of this interdisciplinary debate, however, one theory has
been of particular interest to all parties – the theory of linguistic

Developed primarily by Edward Sapir and Benjamin Whorf (Sapir 1949;
Whorf 1956), linguistic relativity originally focused on controlled
comparisons between contrasting linguistic traditions and related
patterns of behavior in a culture, often with an emphasis on the
historical impact of cultural categories on the evolution of language.
The reason that the theory has been the subject of debate for so long,
however, is because of the lack of good, solid evidence to support it.
Although anthropologists, indigenous scholars, and a few psychologists
have long recognized the deep interconnection between language,
culture, and cosmology, in-depth studies of indigenous languages and
their grammatical and semantic differences has been lacking. Likewise,
comparisons of different indigenous languages across similar cultural
patterns has been hard to achieve. Contributing to the debate, and
adding much needed data and evidence, is the recent book by Sean

It&amp;#39;s quite likely that other languages use pigment based naming schemes for diseases, too.             <description>    &lt;p&gt;I was explaining to Lavender on the weekend about the word Fanny. And how whenever we here in australia hear you crazy americans say it, it makes us laugh. Because here in australia, fanny is the slang word for vagina. So when we hear you say something like - she had a nice fanny, or, he patted her on the fanny, well we just think they are being way to familiar. And I have never heard of an australian called Fanny. No one would do it, it would be too cruel.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But the word that really cracks us up and reduces us to ten year olds in the playground&amp;#160;is - root.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;See here in australia root means sex. But in a more vulgar way. You&amp;#39;d say root like you&amp;#39;d say fuck. So you might tell someone to - get rooted. Or you could be walking down the street and have a car load of guys drive by and yell out the window - hey, you wanna root?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So when we hear a sportsman on television saying - he hopes everyone back home is rooting for him, it conjures up images of everyone back home going mad at it in the bedroom in support.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Or funnier is when you hear someone saying they are rooting for such and such a team. Here, if you said you were rooting for a team, well, lets just say we&amp;#39;d be picturing you at the post game party after a few drinks, not at the actual game.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;So thats just a tip. If you come to australia don&amp;#39;t say you like the look of someones fanny and don&amp;#39;t say you&amp;#39;re going out to root for the team. You may get some funny looks.&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;p style=&quot;clear:both;&quot;&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;I am a teacher by profession. I have spent 3 years in Japan and 6 years in Canada teaching English as a second language. It was a good time. I met interesting people and learned some Japanese. And I learned a lot about the Teaching of English as a Second Language industry.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;One day I found myself completely at odds with the way my career was going. It became clear to me that my students didn&amp;#39;t really learn anything other than how to pass exams, if that was their goal. If not, 80% of them were happy to adopt a studious pose in class, which they immediately left behind at the door.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I tied myself into knots trying to make lessons that were more motivating. It was like hitting my head against a wall. Teachers that had a good rapport with students were generally not better at teaching than I was. They were much more willing to do what I sometimes call &amp;quot;hand-holding&amp;quot; in order smooth classes along, but with the same result: 20%... the driven students... would succeed under any circumstances.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In a classroom of 10 to 15 people, only 3 or 4 are ready to make the effort required to learn. LingQ-ing&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first one, and perhaps the one that stands out the most, is LingQ-ing itself. This is using flashcards to study problem words. After you choose a text, all you do is read, highlight problem words, click the &amp;quot;LingQ&amp;quot; widget, and you have a flashcard that contains the target word, the surrounding phrase, and a potential hint. The flashcard is networked with a series of dictionaries to easily retrieve definitions. The completed flashcards are stockpiled for further review according to a system similar to &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flashcard&quot;&gt;Leitner&amp;#39;s&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;2. Wordcount Measures Progress&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The second aspect is the idea that the number of words that you know is the criteria for how well you know the language. There is a little button next to each text that lets your LingQ account know that you are &amp;quot;all done&amp;quot; with that text. LingQ counts all the individual words in that text (that you haven&amp;#39;t LingQ-ed) and assumes that you know them. LingQ then ranks the remaining texts in the library according to how many &amp;quot;known&amp;quot; words they contain. Accumulating known words motivates LingQers when they are feeling bored with a text but they want to complete it for a given reason--- at low levels there is often limited amount of content that truly appeals to adults.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;3. Repetition&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The third aspect is the simple concept of repetition. Not only do you learn the problem words through repeated flashcard study, but the method emphasises repeated reading and especially listening of the same text. The idea is to repeat as much as you can to allow the flow of the language to become familiar. This is what I would call the grammar component of LingQ. Traditional grammar gives people problems because the appropriate forms are often based on patterns that stretch across many words, many sentences, or even paragraphs of text. The neat, phrase-level, explanations in traditional grammar books are usually full of exceptions. Accurate explanations are difficult for non-grammarians to understand. But repeated listening allows these stretched-out patterns to become accessible to anyone since they are embedded in the familiar context of stories, descriptions, or dialogs.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;At lower levels, when you everything is quite new, you may listen to a thirty second dialog 40 times over the course of a couple of weeks. You can put it down and pick up where you left off in a week, Or you can just start new stuff. This brings me to the fourth aspect of LingQ.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;4. Enjoyment&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The fourth aspect is enjoyment. Learning languages should be a pleasure, otherwise you will never spend the amount of time required to truly master a language. The vast majority of your time you are reading and listening to enjoyable material. Speaking and writing formulaic phrases at a beginner stage is effortful, awkward and is usually not going to help you in a real situation. So is trying to understand decontextualised and sometimes quite contrived grammar rules. Large amounts of listening and reading will eventually get you to the point that you can somewhat &lt;em&gt;spontaneously express yourself because you are actually moved by the topic or situation&lt;/em&gt;. It is possible to speak and write to tutors on LingQ but the discussions flow naturally and corrections are given via a text box so as not to interrupt the flow. Both of these activities lead back to the creation of LingQs.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;5. Community&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, perhaps the most important aspect of LingQ is the community. Much of the content is contributed by the learners themselves, making LingQ a clearing house of ideas, information. attitudes, and accents at the grass roots level. Each account at LingQ can be tagged with a picture, a bio, blog links, and activity scores (&amp;quot;known&amp;quot; words etc). You can make &amp;#39;LingQ friends&amp;#39; and see their profiles. There are lively discussions on the dozens of forums in 10 languages and counting. In the coming weeks, friends of different cultures will be able to tutor each other in a cash-structured language exchange format.             <description>    &lt;p&gt;I was looking up a few terms the other day, and something I read at Wikipedia got me thinking about the difference between terminology and jargon. The former is mainly written; the latter is mainly spoken. When jargon is written, it needs context in order to be understood by those outside the group in which it originally coined. When terminology is spoken, the same need arises.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;We all use &amp;#39;net terminology these days. But now and then I&amp;#39;m starting to hear very young people say, aloud, &amp;quot;wtf?&amp;quot; or &amp;quot;omg.&amp;quot; That&amp;#39;s just as problematic as written jargon, though for an additional reason. Beside the fact that it presents an &amp;quot;insider&amp;quot; code to outsiders, possibly without context, it also just sounds extremely silly, unless used with liberal quantities of irony. And when is the last time you encountered a young person who truly understood the use of irony? Most people take awhile to develop that skill, many never do. :-)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Here&amp;#39;s a quote from wikipedia on the use of jargon, which sounds like it could have been spoken by one of my excellent high school English teachers, &amp;quot;&lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jargon&quot;&gt;Jargon&lt;/a&gt; to the outsider usually comes across as &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedantic&quot; title=&quot;Pedantic&quot;&gt;pedantic&lt;/a&gt;, &lt;a href=&quot;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerdy&quot; title=&quot;Nerdy&quot;&gt;nerdy&lt;/a&gt;, and divorced from meaning.&amp;quot;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;My husband has spent over 20 years in the advertising industry, mainly in the business-to-business sector, and most recently in the pharmaceutical field. Or else they just ignore you for being some sort of dolt.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-size:78%;&quot;&gt;I adore hyperbole.&lt;/span&gt; I really do. Some of his examples are outdated, but they should remind you of many that are used and overused in today&amp;#39;s vernacular. And by vernacular, I really just mean speech. :-)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-size:78%;&quot;&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This brings me to my next pet peeve&lt;/span&gt; of the era, the term &amp;quot;issues.&amp;quot; We&amp;#39;ve all got loads of them. They are our excuse for everything, and I&amp;#39;ve come to loathe the word. In fact, when I used it in my first sentence, I cringed, until I realized that was a legitimate use of the word. It still feels a little slimy, but I left it there to prove my point.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Issue originally meant &amp;quot;bring forth,&amp;quot; but when I looked it up just now to be certain I wasn&amp;#39;t making that up, I found that dictionary.com lists &lt;a href=&quot;http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/issue&quot;&gt;28 common definitions&lt;/a&gt; for the word, and several others which are archaic or idiomatic.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Think &amp;quot;magazine issue,&amp;quot; or the &lt;a href=&quot;http://scriptures.lds.org/en/luke/8/43a&quot;&gt;issue of blood&lt;/a&gt; coming from the chick in the crowd who was healed by Jesus when she touched the hem of his garment. The 6th definition sort of relates to how the word is commonly used now, &lt;em&gt;&amp;quot;a point, matter, or dispute, the decision of which is of special or public importance: the political issues.&amp;quot;&lt;/em&gt; But all the rest have to do with proceeding, distribution, and the like.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;My &amp;quot;issue&amp;quot; with the word &amp;quot;issue,&amp;quot; is not the false use of it, however. It&amp;#39;s the continual use of it. When you say to someone &amp;quot;I&amp;#39;ve got issues with that,&amp;quot; what are you really saying? You&amp;#39;re saying you disagree. Well, why don&amp;#39;t you just bloody disagree? British readers, feel free to translate &amp;quot;bloody&amp;quot; into &amp;quot;fucking,&amp;quot; if that makes you more comfortable. ;-)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-size:78%;&quot;&gt;Here&amp;#39;s the problem.&lt;/span&gt; We&amp;#39;ve emasculated our thoughts, so afraid to offend by merely disagreeing. To disagree in our supposedly polite society is to denigrate the views of the other person or group. BUT THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE. You denigrate your own views by watering them down this way in order to placate those who hold different ones. You subjugate the value of your opinions, which leads me to believe you don&amp;#39;t hold them very strongly. Why bother, then?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The other misuse of the term is the psychological application of it. We&amp;#39;re all psychologists these days. Everyone has issues with everything they don&amp;#39;t handle well. Having issues means it&amp;#39;s something not entirely within your control. I have some issues of my own. I have issues with acrid and sour smells. They make me start to puke, so I don&amp;#39;t like to be around them. I have issues with bureaucracy so I avoid phone calls, forms, and formal procedures as much as possible. I have issues with competition so I don&amp;#39;t enjoy &amp;quot;reality&amp;quot; television.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The first problem, the smell thing, that&amp;#39;s physical, and it&amp;#39;s always been there. I can&amp;#39;t get attuned to it. And since I actually am now allergic to many forms of mold, it&amp;#39;s probably self-protecting, since mold smells are akin to those I&amp;#39;ve always felt sick around. But then, it&amp;#39;s not an issue, is it? It&amp;#39;s just a problem; sometimes a minor annoyance, sometimes a situation to avoid.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Those other issues aren&amp;#39;t problems. The red tape thing, that&amp;#39;s borne of a reserved nature and some bad experiences. It&amp;#39;s a reaction. The competition thing, possibly the same set of causes. It&amp;#39;s not an issue, it&amp;#39;s a preference.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-size:78%;&quot;&gt;But I get to call them all issues.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You might have issues with waiters who act like they&amp;#39;re your best friend instead of someone who&amp;#39;s paid to serve you. So do I. You might have issues with people who eat meat in front of you, or the soap dispensers in public restrooms, or the guy in the cubicle next door who rolls his chair around so violently your little fake walls shudder with every movement.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;You might have more serious issues, like alcoholism, dyslexia, or fear of bacteria, but really, they&amp;#39;re all the same at this point. When you call every challenge or annoyance an issue, you kind of make them all the same, don&amp;#39;t you? They&amp;#39;re just a lot of elements in life that you can&amp;#39;t, or won&amp;#39;t, or don&amp;#39;t know how to control. Three different problems, all mushed into one vague ball of wax.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style=&quot;font-size:78%;&quot;&gt;Language matters.&lt;/span&gt; It really does. I suppose we&amp;#39;re all just more hopelessly aware of the situation now that everyone can fire off an electronic comment on any topic they choose, using tired and vague terminology and then backing it all up with the ubiquitous YMMV. That means &lt;em&gt;&amp;quot;your mileage may vary,&amp;quot;&lt;/em&gt; of course, and is virtually the same as saying &lt;em&gt;&amp;quot;I&amp;#39;ve got issues with that, on so many levels.             <description>    &lt;p&gt;They only fulfil their purpose if the questions are written properly and if the answers on the answer key are correct. If the standardized test is full of errors, then it serves no purpose other than to fuck people up.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The guy who supplies us with standardized tests popped by today. On this test he was peddling today, there&amp;#39;s a long reading section where some guy in London is writing his friend in Toyama.&amp;#160; He says:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;I decided to volunteer to clean small rivers in London because these rivers join the Thames.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In the past, these small rivers were used for garbage and other things. They became very dirty. Later, factories were built beside them, and they became even dirtier.&amp;#160; The dirty water went to the Thames, and the Thames became very dirty. It was dangerous for everyone.&amp;#160; But then, people started to take care of the rivers, and clean them.&amp;#160; Little by little, the small rivers became clean. Then, the Thames became clean.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It is important to keep the Thames clean, so I volunteer to clean small rivers in London.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Afterwards, there is a comprehension question:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;Why did Paul volunteer to clean small rivers?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now, for you and I reading it, of course we&amp;#39;ll say &amp;quot;Because it is important to keep the Thames clean&amp;quot; or &amp;quot;To keep the Thames clean&amp;quot; or something about clean water being good or something.&amp;#160; However, according to the answer key, this is not the correct answer.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The correct answer is: &amp;quot;Because the rivers join the Thames.&amp;quot;&amp;#160; This, of course, is the answer many of the students will choose, and if you&amp;#39;ve been teaching ESL a while it&amp;#39;s clear to see why, but it&amp;#39;s not right at all!&amp;#160; The passage needs a minor re-working (really, just remove the &amp;quot;because&amp;quot;), and the question&amp;#39;s answer on the answer key needs to be fixed.&amp;#160; I pointed this out to the man, and he&amp;#39;s like &amp;quot;... oh, oh my, oh my&amp;quot;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;GIVE ME A JOB WRITING AND/OR PROOFING YOUR GODDAMNED SHITTY STANDARDIZED TESTS, SO THAT WHEN EVERYONE TAKES THEM, EVERYONE LEARNS A PROPER FUCKING LESSON FROM THEIR MISTAKES ON IT, INSTEAD OF LEARNING INCORRECT SHIT LIKE THEY WOULD FROM THIS ONE.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL TO COOL etc.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;/p&gt;    &lt;p style=&quot;clear:both;&quot;&gt;
