Language and Culture Contact in California Native Americans

One of the most perplexing problems in the field of anthropology over the last hundred years has been the relationship between language and culture. Does language shape culture? Does culture shape language? Further, and perhaps more interesting, does language shape our cognition, effecting the very way that we see the world? Similarly, does culture shape our language in such a way that the very words, concepts, and semantic structures within a language are the direct result of the culture’s physical manifestation? These questions and many others have been the subject of debate within anthropology, linguistics, psychology, and other fields of inquiry for well over a century. Out of this interdisciplinary debate, however, one theory has been of particular interest to all parties – the theory of linguistic relativity.

Developed primarily by Edward Sapir and Benjamin Whorf (Sapir 1949; Whorf 1956), linguistic relativity originally focused on controlled comparisons between contrasting linguistic traditions and related patterns of behavior in a culture, often with an emphasis on the historical impact of cultural categories on the evolution of language. The reason that the theory has been the subject of debate for so long, however, is because of the lack of good, solid evidence to support it. Although anthropologists, indigenous scholars, and a few psychologists have long recognized the deep interconnection between language, culture, and cosmology, in-depth studies of indigenous languages and their grammatical and semantic differences has been lacking. Likewise, comparisons of different indigenous languages across similar cultural patterns has been hard to achieve. Contributing to the debate, and adding much needed data and evidence, is the recent book by Sean O’Neill: Cultural Contact and Linguistic Relativity Among the Indians of Northwestern California.

tear

I'm writing a (very) short story for my creative writing class, and decided I wanted to use the word tear.

Then I got confused, realising that tear in fact has two meanings, and can be said two different ways. They're both very common words, and I can't believe it never occurred to me before.

tear(1) - noun
this fluid appearing in or flowing from the eye as the result of emotion, esp. grief.

tear(2) - verb (used with object)
To pull apart or in pieces by force, esp. so as to leave ragged or irregular edges.

I know it isn't some big discovery, but it just really surprised me that I've never noticed before.

YellowFeverVirus

I've just returned from an unsuccessful attempt to get my vaccinations for an upcoming trip. But the travel clinic has moved and no longer does a walk-in service. I now have an appointment to visit them at their new premises tomorrow morning.

While I was walking to where the climic used to be I started wondering why Yellow Fever got its name. The World Health Organisation suggests that it is because it causes jaundice in some patients. Yellow normally looks quite nice, so I suppose it's a much more cheery name than than Black Vomit or the American Plague, which Wikipedia suggests are also common synonyms.

I think I really quite like the idea of naming illnesses after the colours associated with them I've found that there are quite a few.

Black pague, more commonly known as the bubonic plague;
Green fever, or anaemia;
Pink eye, more commonly known as conjunctivitis;
Rose cold, or hayfever;
Scarlet fever, a kind of strep throat that can progress to rheumatic fever; and
White swelling, or tuberculosis of the bone

A few colours are obviosuly missing from my list and I was only looking for the English names for diseases. It's quite likely that other languages use pigment based naming schemes for diseases, too. They might even use different colours from English.

Political language

Feel free to refer to the list as the cacophony of political advocacy and advertising reaches its peak over the next few weeks. And don't let anyone con you into thinking that words don't matter.

rooting for the team

I was explaining to Lavender on the weekend about the word Fanny. And how whenever we here in australia hear you crazy americans say it, it makes us laugh. Because here in australia, fanny is the slang word for vagina. So when we hear you say something like - she had a nice fanny, or, he patted her on the fanny, well we just think they are being way to familiar. And I have never heard of an australian called Fanny. No one would do it, it would be too cruel.

But the word that really cracks us up and reduces us to ten year olds in the playground is - root.

See here in australia root means sex. But in a more vulgar way. You'd say root like you'd say fuck. So you might tell someone to - get rooted. Or you could be walking down the street and have a car load of guys drive by and yell out the window - hey, you wanna root?

So when we hear a sportsman on television saying - he hopes everyone back home is rooting for him, it conjures up images of everyone back home going mad at it in the bedroom in support.

Or funnier is when you hear someone saying they are rooting for such and such a team. Here, if you said you were rooting for a team, well, lets just say we'd be picturing you at the post game party after a few drinks, not at the actual game.

So thats just a tip. If you come to australia don't say you like the look of someones fanny and don't say you're going out to root for the team. You may get some funny looks.

I am a teacher by profession. I have spent 3 years in Japan and 6 years in Canada teaching English as a second language. It was a good time. I met interesting people and learned some Japanese. And I learned a lot about the Teaching of English as a Second Language industry.

One day I found myself completely at odds with the way my career was going. It became clear to me that my students didn't really learn anything other than how to pass exams, if that was their goal. If not, 80% of them were happy to adopt a studious pose in class, which they immediately left behind at the door.

I tied myself into knots trying to make lessons that were more motivating. It was like hitting my head against a wall. Teachers that had a good rapport with students were generally not better at teaching than I was. They were much more willing to do what I sometimes call "hand-holding" in order smooth classes along, but with the same result: 20%... the driven students... would succeed under any circumstances.

In a classroom of 10 to 15 people, only 3 or 4 are ready to make the effort required to learn. The rest are satisfied to be passive learners at best. LingQ gives those 3 to 4 learners a chance to succeed at a much cheaper price (there is a free version and a very useful version starts at $10 US/month) and with a much more sensible methodology. I invite everyone to read this lens and find out more.

It is ok to feel like this LingQ is going to be about the same old stuff. For example:"This is a perfect method for learning languages!!". Or, "We have finally found the answer to all the laziness, boredom, and general blah that surrounds the learning of languages!" I assure you, LingQ does not offer paradise in 10 minutes. The first and most important thing you must understand, and I am a language teacher/administrator with 9 years' experience, is that language learning is not for those who aren't ready to dedicate time and effort to it.

The following is a more in depth description of one of my favourite web spaces. It is the best language learning website I have come across for its marriage of principles, methodology, and execution. It could be the next great Web 2.0 phenomena.

On the face of it,LingQ, operated by Mark Kaufmann,is just a cluster of on-line audio-text libraries in 10 different languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Swedish, German, Russian, Chinese,and Japanese. These just happen to be the ten languages that the creative force behind LingQ, CEO Steve Kaufmann, speaks. When you look a little deeper you can see that after you choose one text, the audio can be downloaded to your MP3 player. Further along, you can see that there is a flashcard widget, the actual "LingQ" in LingQ, which gathers a database of all the words you chose to study from the text. Finally, you see that anyone can import texts with audio to the libraries.

When you start using LingQ you see it is made up of 5 main aspects.

1. LingQ-ing
The first one, and perhaps the one that stands out the most, is LingQ-ing itself. This is using flashcards to study problem words. After you choose a text, all you do is read, highlight problem words, click the "LingQ" widget, and you have a flashcard that contains the target word, the surrounding phrase, and a potential hint. The flashcard is networked with a series of dictionaries to easily retrieve definitions. The completed flashcards are stockpiled for further review according to a system similar to Leitner's.

2. Wordcount Measures Progress
The second aspect is the idea that the number of words that you know is the criteria for how well you know the language. There is a little button next to each text that lets your LingQ account know that you are "all done" with that text. LingQ counts all the individual words in that text (that you haven't LingQ-ed) and assumes that you know them. LingQ then ranks the remaining texts in the library according to how many "known" words they contain. Accumulating known words motivates LingQers when they are feeling bored with a text but they want to complete it for a given reason--- at low levels there is often limited amount of content that truly appeals to adults.

3. Repetition
The third aspect is the simple concept of repetition. Not only do you learn the problem words through repeated flashcard study, but the method emphasises repeated reading and especially listening of the same text. The idea is to repeat as much as you can to allow the flow of the language to become familiar. This is what I would call the grammar component of LingQ. Traditional grammar gives people problems because the appropriate forms are often based on patterns that stretch across many words, many sentences, or even paragraphs of text. The neat, phrase-level, explanations in traditional grammar books are usually full of exceptions. Accurate explanations are difficult for non-grammarians to understand. But repeated listening allows these stretched-out patterns to become accessible to anyone since they are embedded in the familiar context of stories, descriptions, or dialogs.

At lower levels, when you everything is quite new, you may listen to a thirty second dialog 40 times over the course of a couple of weeks. You can put it down and pick up where you left off in a week, Or you can just start new stuff. This brings me to the fourth aspect of LingQ.

4. Enjoyment
The fourth aspect is enjoyment. Learning languages should be a pleasure, otherwise you will never spend the amount of time required to truly master a language. The vast majority of your time you are reading and listening to enjoyable material. Speaking and writing formulaic phrases at a beginner stage is effortful, awkward and is usually not going to help you in a real situation. So is trying to understand decontextualised and sometimes quite contrived grammar rules. Large amounts of listening and reading will eventually get you to the point that you can somewhat spontaneously express yourself because you are actually moved by the topic or situation. It is possible to speak and write to tutors on LingQ but the discussions flow naturally and corrections are given via a text box so as not to interrupt the flow. Both of these activities lead back to the creation of LingQs.

5. Community
Finally, perhaps the most important aspect of LingQ is the community. Much of the content is contributed by the learners themselves, making LingQ a clearing house of ideas, information. attitudes, and accents at the grass roots level. Each account at LingQ can be tagged with a picture, a bio, blog links, and activity scores ("known" words etc). You can make 'LingQ friends' and see their profiles. There are lively discussions on the dozens of forums in 10 languages and counting. In the coming weeks, friends of different cultures will be able to tutor each other in a cash-structured language exchange format. Ultimately, the community is what will keep the learner coming back to the site and doing the work necessary to learn.

On language

I was looking up a few terms the other day, and something I read at Wikipedia got me thinking about the difference between terminology and jargon. The former is mainly written; the latter is mainly spoken. When jargon is written, it needs context in order to be understood by those outside the group in which it originally coined. When terminology is spoken, the same need arises.

We all use 'net terminology these days. But now and then I'm starting to hear very young people say, aloud, "wtf?" or "omg." That's just as problematic as written jargon, though for an additional reason. Beside the fact that it presents an "insider" code to outsiders, possibly without context, it also just sounds extremely silly, unless used with liberal quantities of irony. And when is the last time you encountered a young person who truly understood the use of irony? Most people take awhile to develop that skill, many never do. :-)

Here's a quote from wikipedia on the use of jargon, which sounds like it could have been spoken by one of my excellent high school English teachers, "Jargon to the outsider usually comes across as pedantic, nerdy, and divorced from meaning."

My husband has spent over 20 years in the advertising industry, mainly in the business-to-business sector, and most recently in the pharmaceutical field. You would be hard-pressed to find a more jargon-addled world. When he uses business-speak at home or while we're dining out, I have to remind him that these terms are not common to an outsider. He spends so much time in that world, it's easy for him to forget that the world at-large is not privy to the code.

And when he, on occasion, claims that everybody knows what x or y means, I gently remind him that his daily environment is fairly insular, and that everyone else is off somewhere else forming codes of their own.

Issuing pathology

Here are some communication issues I'd like to see addressed over the next few months in everyone's lives.

First, how often do you say "That's wrong on so many levels," or "That was a great experience on so many levels?" When people say "...on so many levels," aren't they really just saying, "very?" Should we blame Emeril for always taking things to notches yet unknown in the stratosphere? Should we ask the King of Hyperbole to maybe take it down a notch?

I have noticed that when you ask the people how many levels they mean, or what the difference is between these levels, they're generally quite put-off. Or else they just ignore you for being some sort of dolt.

I adore hyperbole. I really do. But the current use of it reminds me of George Orwell's statement on the use of metaphor. "A newly invented metaphor assists thought by evoking a visual image, while on the other hand a metaphor which is technically 'dead' has in effect reverted to being an ordinary word and can generally be used without loss of vividness." Put another way, saying "on so many levels" all the time about everything renders the phrase impotent, and frankly, tiresome.

Well, really, now is the perfect time to tell you, all you dear readers and writers, to read this essay excerpt on making good language choices.

He makes me feel so lazy, but I agree with every word. Some of his examples are outdated, but they should remind you of many that are used and overused in today's vernacular. And by vernacular, I really just mean speech. :-)

This brings me to my next pet peeve of the era, the term "issues." We've all got loads of them. They are our excuse for everything, and I've come to loathe the word. In fact, when I used it in my first sentence, I cringed, until I realized that was a legitimate use of the word. It still feels a little slimy, but I left it there to prove my point.

Issue originally meant "bring forth," but when I looked it up just now to be certain I wasn't making that up, I found that dictionary.com lists 28 common definitions for the word, and several others which are archaic or idiomatic.

Think "magazine issue," or the issue of blood coming from the chick in the crowd who was healed by Jesus when she touched the hem of his garment. The 6th definition sort of relates to how the word is commonly used now, "a point, matter, or dispute, the decision of which is of special or public importance: the political issues." But all the rest have to do with proceeding, distribution, and the like.

My "issue" with the word "issue," is not the false use of it, however. It's the continual use of it. When you say to someone "I've got issues with that," what are you really saying? You're saying you disagree. Well, why don't you just bloody disagree? British readers, feel free to translate "bloody" into "fucking," if that makes you more comfortable. ;-)

Here's the problem. We've emasculated our thoughts, so afraid to offend by merely disagreeing. To disagree in our supposedly polite society is to denigrate the views of the other person or group. BUT THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE. You denigrate your own views by watering them down this way in order to placate those who hold different ones. You subjugate the value of your opinions, which leads me to believe you don't hold them very strongly. Why bother, then?

The other misuse of the term is the psychological application of it. We're all psychologists these days. Everyone has issues with everything they don't handle well. Having issues means it's something not entirely within your control. I have some issues of my own. I have issues with acrid and sour smells. They make me start to puke, so I don't like to be around them. I have issues with bureaucracy so I avoid phone calls, forms, and formal procedures as much as possible. I have issues with competition so I don't enjoy "reality" television.

The first problem, the smell thing, that's physical, and it's always been there. I can't get attuned to it. And since I actually am now allergic to many forms of mold, it's probably self-protecting, since mold smells are akin to those I've always felt sick around. But then, it's not an issue, is it? It's just a problem; sometimes a minor annoyance, sometimes a situation to avoid.

Those other issues aren't problems. The red tape thing, that's borne of a reserved nature and some bad experiences. It's a reaction. The competition thing, possibly the same set of causes. It's not an issue, it's a preference.

But I get to call them all issues.

You might have issues with waiters who act like they're your best friend instead of someone who's paid to serve you. So do I. You might have issues with people who eat meat in front of you, or the soap dispensers in public restrooms, or the guy in the cubicle next door who rolls his chair around so violently your little fake walls shudder with every movement.

You might have more serious issues, like alcoholism, dyslexia, or fear of bacteria, but really, they're all the same at this point. When you call every challenge or annoyance an issue, you kind of make them all the same, don't you? They're just a lot of elements in life that you can't, or won't, or don't know how to control. Three different problems, all mushed into one vague ball of wax.

Language matters. It really does. I could blame the internets for the watering down of it all, but obviously Orwell, and C.S. Lewis, and many other fine writers of past eras have commented on the same problems. I suppose we're all just more hopelessly aware of the situation now that everyone can fire off an electronic comment on any topic they choose, using tired and vague terminology and then backing it all up with the ubiquitous YMMV. That means "your mileage may vary," of course, and is virtually the same as saying "I've got issues with that, on so many levels. But it's okay if you don't agree with me in case you weren't clear on that!"

I was going to redress my "issues" with irony and the use of "ironic" in this essay as well, but I think it deserves a separate post.

Funny Japanese speaking lesson...sorta

HOW TO SPEAK FLUENT JAPANESE WITHOUT SAYING A WORD

This is actually a bit old, but I recently re-watched it with a friend while we were talking about Japanese. There's something peculiar yet really true-to-form about this video. I don't know why this works, but it really does. Try it sometime on a few of your Japanese friends, and see if you get a nice laugh out if it!

Speaking of Japanese, the application for the JPLT (Japanese Proficiency Level Test) is ending this month, so for those of you hoping to see how well you fare in your reading, writing, and listening skills, this test is a must-recommend. The actual test date is far off in December, so get out your books and study aids and start cramming. Maybe we'll bump into each other there! :)

Up and Down

There are many phrases in the English language that contain words implying direction, when no direction is implied in the meaning.

We say "slow up" and "slow down" to convey the same meaning, though one isn't necessarily slowing with a particular direction in mind. Nor would we ever say "slow sideways".

But though we urge people to "hurry up", we never urge them to "hurry down" in the same sense, unless they read an ad urges them to "hurry down to the XYZ store for great savings!"

"Sit up" and "sit down" have complementary meanings that do involve direction. "Stand up" is the opposite movement from "sit down", but "stand down" isn't the opposite of "sit up".

We "wake up", but we don't "sleep down".

Parents tell their children to "settle down", but they never tell them to "settle up" -- unless the kids owe their parents money!

People "boogie down", but they never "boogie up". They also "fuck up", but never "fuck down", though I'd be willing to give it a try!

We "put people down", to insult them, but to "put people up", is to offer them lodging and hospitality.

One can "put up with" something or someone, but we can't "put down with" the same thing. And then there's "Put in" and "put out", which can both involve the sex act, but that's for another post on "in and out"!

The problem with standardized tests.

They only fulfil their purpose if the questions are written properly and if the answers on the answer key are correct. If the standardized test is full of errors, then it serves no purpose other than to fuck people up.

The guy who supplies us with standardized tests popped by today. On this test he was peddling today, there's a long reading section where some guy in London is writing his friend in Toyama. He says:

I decided to volunteer to clean small rivers in London because these rivers join the Thames.
In the past, these small rivers were used for garbage and other things. They became very dirty. Later, factories were built beside them, and they became even dirtier. The dirty water went to the Thames, and the Thames became very dirty. It was dangerous for everyone. But then, people started to take care of the rivers, and clean them. Little by little, the small rivers became clean. Then, the Thames became clean.
It is important to keep the Thames clean, so I volunteer to clean small rivers in London.

Afterwards, there is a comprehension question:

Why did Paul volunteer to clean small rivers?

Now, for you and I reading it, of course we'll say "Because it is important to keep the Thames clean" or "To keep the Thames clean" or something about clean water being good or something. However, according to the answer key, this is not the correct answer.

The correct answer is: "Because the rivers join the Thames." This, of course, is the answer many of the students will choose, and if you've been teaching ESL a while it's clear to see why, but it's not right at all! The passage needs a minor re-working (really, just remove the "because"), and the question's answer on the answer key needs to be fixed. I pointed this out to the man, and he's like "... oh, oh my, oh my".

GIVE ME A JOB WRITING AND/OR PROOFING YOUR GODDAMNED SHITTY STANDARDIZED TESTS, SO THAT WHEN EVERYONE TAKES THEM, EVERYONE LEARNS A PROPER FUCKING LESSON FROM THEIR MISTAKES ON IT, INSTEAD OF LEARNING INCORRECT SHIT LIKE THEY WOULD FROM THIS ONE.
