I can't believe February is a short month...

Started on the February Sweater, but boy is it taking me a while. So I've not made buttonholes, and I've not really done any fancy increases before, but I've frogged and restarted this about thrice now. Hopefully I'll get the hang of it.

Am watching a Korean period drama (involving food, no less) while I'm knitting the sweater is not helping either. I'm so distracted I can't even count the rows properly. Anyway.

The Lorna's Laces I chose for the pattern is turning out fine, I just wish I had 6mm needles for it. I'm using size 6.5mm needles, and it's a little loose, but then again at least I get the right gauge. The yarn is so soft though, I'm glad I chose it. And it's superwash. How much better is that for a sweater?

Can't wait to see how Sharkie's turns out. This is our joint project so I'm a little more motivated to complete it. If not I'd have left it frogged and used the yarn for something else by now. So exciting, doing this together.

For Wee Baby Feet

First Cashmere Baby Moc-A-Socks

Little baby feet need little booties! I knit these with the Moc-A-Soc pattern found at Bekah Knits here. It's a great pattern. I'll make more in the future, no doubt!

Oooo...and she just came out with an adult size pattern for it as well!

I did leave off the inside sock, as I got sick and ran out of time for knitting. I used some recycled cashmere sweater yarn, held together to make a sport weight. I hope the baby is comfy in them. He should be...they're soft and warm!

I felt so badly that day, and had a wedding to go to later in the evening, that I only stayed for a short time at the baby shower. I felt terrible about leaving just after she opened the gift. Oh well, she's a friend. She understood, I'm sure!

Another Christmas present in progress

I have yet to post any information about the Jawbreaker Cardigan intended as a Christmas gift.

I've got the back and the right front made. I'm currently working on the left front. Because the yarn (my beloved Rowan "Plaid") knits up fast I may have the left front done by this evening. After that, I need the sleeves and the collar. A nifty abalone & wood button will provide the finishing touch.

I'm considering blocking the pieces before assembly, but it's been a while since I read through the entire pattern, and I don't recall at this point whether or not that's a good idea. Seems to me it might be, but the collar is made by picking up stitches around the neck rather than as a separate piece, so advance blocking may be problematic. I'll get back to you on that bit.

Knitting a cape

My mom taught me and my best friend how to knit when we were about 5 years old. We would have knitting races to see who could get the most done before bedtime. If there was a mistake, even if it was rows and rows back, she would unravel it back to that point for me to do over. I got mad at her more than once for that! But it taught me a lot.

Anyway, I found a lovely camel color of Paton's Shetland Chunky in a craft store the other day, and this cute pattern was next to it:

I'm about 1/4 done, and it's really a good way to pass the time. I've even figured out how to knit while I'm lying down. Funny thing though, I used to hate to purl, and now I like it just as much as the knit rows.

ZOMG I <3 this pattern and yarn!

Awhile back I saw a sample scarf in a yarn store that was absolutely gorgeous, but it took me 15 minutes of internal debate to convince myself it was actually knit and not crochet. Even then I had no clue how to do it – was it knit horizontally? Vertically? The pattern was advertised as free with the purchase of a skein of yarn… and of course the yarn was what I consider crazy expensive ($32.95). So then I spent another 15 minutes debating whether to buy it or not…

I bought it.

Anyway, get to the paying part and ask about the free-pattern-with-yarn, thinking it is from the yarn manufacturer or was designed by someone in house or something. The gal turns to the computer, goes to a website, and prints the pattern. As in, I could have gotten it without buying a skein of yarn if I’d known where to look. The yarn I bought wasn’t even the yarn the pattern calls for – I’m using Lorna’s Laces ‘Lion and Lamb’ 50% silk 50% wool yarn with size 9 needles instead of what the pattern calls for. But OMG this yarn is GORGEOUS and SOFT.

Anyway, the pattern looks crazy complicated, but it is actually insanely easy. After doing the first 2 rows a couple times, I don't need to follow the pattern and I can work on it in autopilot without meticulously counting stitches on every row like my other work-in-progress, which I can't detail here because it is a Christmas gift for someone I know reads my blog. Anyway, I expect I’m going to make many more of these (using more than one skein of a less expensive yarn) and experiment with making them wider and longer (I like long scarves, and this is going to end up being a fairly short and narrow scarf when its done).

I got this done over a hair appt today.

New Scarf!

This little girl needed something to keep out the cold!!!

I was knitting this scarf to be adult-sized, but the lace pattern, while pretty, was starting to really get on my nerves. I had knitted maybe two feet and decided today that it was now a baby scarf! I added that cool button on one end, and since this is a lace scarf I can button it anywhere, making it the ultimate in adjustable winterwear.

She is feeling a little better, I guess. We had no more incidences with the bulb syringe, so that was awesome (for us both). Hopefully we can ward off future colds with her new scarf ;)

Sock it 2 me

After nearly two years of knitting, I had never made socks, and desperately wanted to learn. So many cute patterns! Such a great gift idea! And so I signed up for a sock class at my beloved LYS, The Sew-So Shop in downtown Marysville. We would be making socks using the two-at-a-time technique. I bought the book:

2-at-a-Time Socks: Revealed Inside. . . The Secret of Knitting Two at Once on One Circular Needle Works for any Sock Pattern!

And some sock yarn:

And a pair of size 2 Addi Turbo Lace 40-inch circular needles.

Double pointed needles were the reason I avoided socks to this point. DPNs scare the snot out of me. Sometimes I have enough trouble with two needles. Why on earth would I want to mess with four or five? However, I understand circular needles and how they work.

The verdict? So far so good! This method of making socks is sooooo easy! Okay, the first couple of rows are a little tough, mainly because they're so tight against the needle, but once past that, it's smoooooth knitting. In fact, this method may have helped me get past my fear of DPNs. At least now I'm willing to give them a try, with something other than sock yarn.

At any rate, I've finished the cuffs:

and am ready to start on the heel flap. If all goes well, I'll get the heel flap done before our next class on Thursday. That way I can have a hands-on lesson in turning the heel.

Knitting for Charity, Browncoat style

Recently, the actress who played Saffron on Firefly auctioned a handknit scarf on ebay for charity. The winning bid was $255.00.

Some folks at work thought there was enough of a resemblance to suggest we could be sisters... not sure I agree with them, but still, it got me thinking. I'm not an actress but I do knit and there are lots of deserving charities out there. So here's the deal: donate $250 to either Children's Hospital or Climb for Kids and I'll knit you one of Jayne's Cunning Hats, or a Fibonacci Scarf in the two colors of your choice.

when assembling skuvnar it is best to be two people

I am just so proud of myself. I was working on this great capelet pattern on my own, no pattern or anything. I used top-down raglan calculations, cast on, worked back and forth for an open cardigan style, did kfb increases, 2x2 ribbing, the whole shebang. But then it was a GIANT. It was seriously so big and droopy. I don't understand how. My gauge must have changed as I knit. I thought, what the hell, blocking will help, right? No. It didn't. So then I said, fuck it, I'm felting this badboy.

And then it was magically perfect. I mean, it felted SO easily. All I did was wash and dry it with a load of towels. And it felted up so beautifully. And it fits perfectly! The back is a bit short, but I really like how it looks. I need it for when I'm a bridesmaid in a wedding later this month. The weather in the Chicagoland area is supposed to be in the 60s ... after acclimating to this 95 degree weather in Texas I am going to freeze my bum off up there. So I'm hoping this helps.

As always I have a few things on the needles, but the memory card for my camera broke two weeks ago so it's been hard to document correctly. Also, blocking takes forever. BUT. I finished my Clapotis.

I might give it to my mom for Xmas, but I'm not sure yet. I had some dyelot issues so one of the ends is a tad darker than the rest. I dyed it with some black cherry Kool-Aid, which actually did help, but didn't help enough. So we'll see. I may buy some nice Lorna's Laces or something to make another one for her. I think she'd like it. I can't really do anything until my fellowship money comes in, though. Oh ... that will be a glorious day.

Moving right along...

The mini Pom is nearly done. Some assembly is required, but all the pieces are ready.

Stupid fiddly mohair yarn nearly drove me insane on the little bits. *grrr* The body, legs, tail, and ears need brushing out to fluffy fullness, and then all the bits will be sewn together. I expect to finish it tomorrow. In the meantime, here's a pic of the latest finished Christmas present, a scarf for my niece:

Project details
Yarn? "Dream" by Dark Horse Yarns, 1 skein, colorway 106.
Pattern? Don't make me laugh. I simply cast on 15 stitches using size 17 circular needles, and worked row after row of stockinette until the yarn was gone.
Satisfaction with end product? I like it. I hope the 5-year-old for whom it's intended will, too.

A beret I knit - pardon the deranged expression

this is a work-in-progress i started last march. i apparently don't knit in the summer generally (excepting the occasional bikini) but i dragged this out while i was staying out in the cabin, frogged back to the most major screw-up, and continued on.

i ran into a few snags, sure - but i've finally come to the point where i feel like it's okay to "fake it" through a mistake - as in, knitting a couple stitches together when you wind up with an extra here and there, or whatever.

all i knew is that i wanted to finish something, and so... last night i caught up on one of the only TV shows i've ever watched and put an end to this, so I plowed through it, overlooked a couple of minor mishaps, and put it to bed.

I had an excessive stash of this orange, Lion Brand acrylic/wool blend yarn from an unsuccessful attempt to start a shrug last fall. I used two strands held together to make a "chunky weight" yarn for this.

it was terribly easy - so if you're feeling inspire to knit one, here's a free pattern from Crazy Aunt Purl. This should NOT take you half a year to complete. The chunky version could possibly take you an hour or two, and somewhere in there is a link to a worsted-weight version as well, if chunky isn't your style.

socks are taking me too long - so, i'll keep a sock project on the needles continuously, while i whip out quick and easy hats - at least while i'm in northern climes... if i wind up in the tropics for winter again, it's highly likely i probably won't be knitting much (unless, of course, i find myself spending a lot of time on Ravelry again - that's always what gets me rollin' with the sticks all over again - how did I ever knit before Ravelry?).

for now, probably this. and since i'm on a roll with finishing things, i've got a few new Etsy items to list, believe it or not - including a necklace that will be done by this afternoon. It's something that should have taken me an hour, but three days later and it's almost complete.

Finally!

Alright, so I have finally got some pictures of some recently completed knitted items!

My shrug

This shrug I did over last weekend! It's double strands of Caron's Simply soft Heather blue (i think!) and white. I used a purse stitch so it looks nice and open, but really...it's pretty warm!

I wore it to work today for casual Friday...got quite a few complements, that was pretty awesome!

So now that I have made 2 successful shrugs, I think I'm going to start making them for my Etsy shop!

I also finished this beanie and got it listed in my Etsy Shop I finished another one last night, but didn't get pictures yet...but they will be coming!

I have also been practicing my new found crocheting abilities and making granny squares. Still need to get pictures of that too!

Hopefully this weekend, being a 4 day weekend for me, I will be able to get a lot of things done. I think what's really going to happen tho is that I will work, and sleep a lot, and then be too lazy/tired to do anything really productful!

Today I finished my first ever handknit sock.

I'm currently working on another sock, one that will be part of a pair because I have enough yarn for it.

Yesterday I emailed Ben J. and Meredith S. letting them know that I came across a photo of the Alf lunchbox I've been telling them about. And also letting them know that if they ever want to get me a gift, it will suffice sufficiently.

I watch an episode somewhat recently.
It was kinda awkward and depressing---still kinda funny in that bad way. And I couldn't really figure out why people thought it would be a good idea to make it into a show.

I'd watch more episodes, though.

The textures are just great, and I loved the colors in this yarn (from the swap I mentioned before). I can't wait for it to cool down so that I can put this to good use. I do hear it gets a bit cold here, down to the 30s or so. Perfect for cowls.

Amy Caterina's Knit Creatures

You know, that fuzzy yarn that most knitters have in their stash from their beginning knitting days? Most of the time it’s sent to the bottom of the stash once you realize you can’t really see your stitches to know they’re done correctly.

Artist Amy Caterina, current artist-in-residence at CalState Fullerton’s Grand Central Gallery in Santa Ana, CA has managed to use up quite a stash of fun fur. In her installation “This used to be real estate, now it’s only fields and trees.” she knit up several forest creatures—not tiny ones, either—placed in a faux environment of trees and sunny skies.

I guess there is something back in the OC that I have to miss! I’m trying to remember what David Byrne song this artwork reminds me of, but I can’t at the moment.
