A. left at 10am to go visit my sister and her friend R who had just become a mother. She drove far and met somebody she had been corresponding with since R found out she was pregnant. A had advice to give, I think, because she had my beautiful babies.

Today was my day to stay home with beautiful babies. I fed them, cleaned their puke, changed their diapers, and in JJs case, hid behind doorways and in our alleyway kitchen and jumped out and growled at him. He growled right back. Arrr. So cute when a 1 1/2 yr old growls back at you. He said banana multiple times when I brought one out, and when he was playing with his dinky cars/hot wheels he would say "uh oh!" I hope he learns to talk more so he can prove to everyone how smart he is. I already know.

When A finally got home I bathed JJ and went to meet with KT, the pastor of the church that A and I like to attend. He wanted to talk to me about my depression and my life with my family. I told him about my negative opinion of myself and how I felt like I had lost my centre. He told me that people think they're tougher than they are, and that things like that are supposed to hurt, and not to be so hard on myself. I think I can do that. Taking risks is part of life. He suggested I go back to keeping a diary (here I am!) and find career counselling, to make sure I'm headed in the right direction. I think any direction is good right now... you can only tread water for so long. I'm doomed at PYS, just because my heart is not in it any more. Time to move on ASAP.

I'd like to become a police officer or a teacher. I think I would be good at either job. I think they both pay about the same. Being an officer is a little more dangerous. I wouldn't want my kids to worry about me... but it just doesn't seem that scary to me. I think officers take care of themselves pretty well, and you don't hear about them being injured very often around here. Seems like more often they are getting in trouble for being inappropriate. But maybe that's just the way it works in the news. Teaching is really appealing but five years of school (at the least in my case) seems like a lot. It really would be a great job to have, though.

A suggested I go out when I got home so I did. I met up with uncle J and his friend JC. We drank beers and shot the shit a little. JC seems to have grown up a little, but not much. He's still 19 at heart I think. Uncle J was excited about the catering gig he had finished for JHs parents, they paid him well and pimped his business. He's a good caterer, he did JJs first birthday. Excellent food. I hope he makes something of his culinary self.

I listened to Art Blakey and the Unicorns on the way home, and ate Hawaiian pizza. The pizza place said no slices after 6pm, so no wonder they charged me only a dollar for two slices. Still, the ale made me hungry. It was good to walk and think. Every step I take towards myself brings me closer to my centre. I thought a lot about what I wanted my family to have in ten years. We need 3 bedrooms and a backyard, and I want A to have a nice car. It's too much for us now but I think it's in our future. Let's just start walking towards it.

My life will be better the further I move from nowhere and closer to myself and my family. I really want that and it's time to take action and move towards it. I love my kids and wife and I want them to know that I am happy with my life and am thankful for them.

Some of my friends have asked me to let you know of any opportunities to see/hear me playing music at local venues. Here's a chance to catch some good live jazz and support a worthy cause. Mark Klein is a friend of mine and a very talented pianist. He's put together a core trio (piano/bass/drums) and has invited several vocal and instrumental soloists to join him for a fun evening of eclectic music. I'll be playing EWI on a few songs. I have been away for a little over a month but it seems like a lifetime. The month of June was a trying time for me but a very humbling time...a time for reflection, a time for getting my act together in reference to my priorities and I thank God for his mercy, his grace, my beautiful wife and big shout out to my brother Doug Fresh for his encouraging words. It's good to be able to put together these music selection for it gets me back to my roots when it comes to my podcast. I hope you enjoy the tracks I bring you.

Nighthawks Bebop

Opening Scene

Setting--- "Cup O' Joe" Cafe, on Lexington Avenue. It's 12:37 a.m. and there is a slow and steady crowd that comes and goes as they please. The only thing we hear is the melancholy Mute of the trumpet. It's one of those nights. While the city refuses to sleep the "Cup O' Joe" Cafe supplies endless amounts of strong Arabica coffee to the nameless faces of the night.

Ike. A young black 23-year old whose been unemployed for the last week or so. The economy is in one of those slumps, and the bills still haven't been paid. He takes in a long profound sigh, as he swivels that black coffee from side to side. He hopes he'll be able to leave that poor waitress a tip. At this point, he feels it's unjust for society to ask a poor unemployed black man to leave a tip, but hey, no one ever said life would be fair. He takes his old man's hat off, and runs his fingers through the worn out fabric. He recalls those simple days when his dad would come home from the old Georgian Granite Factory, and come home beat tired and covered in the red Georgia clay. He remembers Daddy's words, "Say son, yo' old dad's ti'ed and his bones ache, but I tell you what this ol' man has gone an earned a mighty fine livin' for his wife and kids. Just like y'all be able to one day." Yes, just like he would be able to some day. If his old man could see him now. Living in one New York's dirtiest slums, and practically a penniless beggar. He takes in the final drop of coffee. Looks to the mirror, and finds that his reflection resembles that of his father, the shame is almost to much to bear. He gathers what is now yesterday's paper, and puts that hat back on. Today is new day, and he'll job hunt until he can't no more. He searches his pockets, and finds the last 5 cents he has. Society can forgive his indecency for now, but this poor black man isn't no mood for courtesy.

Estelle. A hard and over worked 47-year old waitress. She's been working nights at the ol' "Cup O' Joes" cafe for the last year now, and that extra dough has hardly helped her support herself and her two young ones. She run's back and forth from table to table supplying the same old burnt black coffee for all the whores and pimps of the night who stopped here for a brief moment of silence. She shouts the next order up, and hopes that grumpy cook don't give her any lip for so help her God she'll giver her a piece of her mind and then some. She runs up to Cindy, and asks her to keep an eye on her tables while she goes out for a smoke. She lights one up, and takes in that first bittersweet scent of tobacco. She watches the smoke fade into the pitch black of the night, and wonders what it must feel like to be that weightless, and that free. She shifts her weight from one leg to the other, and swallows the shooting pain that has been afflicting her for the last 3 months. She doesn't complain about it. Why should she? Who would care? After all, this extra cash will go towards their future so they can live a better life. One that wasn't meant for their old Ma'. If they only knew how much this old woman hurts from day in and day out. If they only knew that even though she religiously checked over their homework that she hardly knew how to read. The bell rings, and she notices that the young black man from table six has now made his way out of the cafe. Hopefully the tips from tonight will go towards new shoes for Ella and Noah.

Harlow, Ronnie Scotts & Egg Banjos

Well what a week! After the BBC Radio 4 show Loose Ends show we were off to Harlow for the Mid Summer Festival on Sunday 22nd June - we filmed some of the festival and it was lovely singing in the sun! The audience were fabulous and I met up with friends from Dundee after the show.

Monday 23rd June - Ronnie Scotts

We travelled into London earlyish and checked into the hotel. Martin and I had a radio session which was really fun and very enjoyable. We had some very good friends coming down from Scotland to the Ronnies show, one very special friend flew down in his private plane to be there! As well as having a long list of press guests and two record company executives from Sony Japan, Ronnies was pretty much full!! We played 2 one hour sets which I think was quite unusual for a week day show - the audience were a real listening audience and there was absolutely no chat while we were playing! The show went really well and we chilled out with our friends after the show. A fabulous young guitarist called Marcus Bonfanti came along too with his partner Lizzie and I was really thrilled to see them.

Tuesday 24th June - Rays Jazz In-store & Ronnie Scotts

Martin and I had an in store at Rays Jazz which was bursting with people before heading back to the hotel to get ready for the show. Not sure what dress to wear - but went for a black and white 50's style number! Short but kinda cute! The show went extremely well - and again we had a load of press people there as well as the execs from Sony Japan. Ready to eat something - we all headed over to Little Italy for something to eat with the Sony Japan executives. I took my Haverhill Lamp with we - just as well as the lights were so low that none of us could read the menu.

Wednesday 25th June - travel home - can't wait to see the cat!

With a couple of days to get back to base and I had a radio interview with Alan Steadman at Radio Tay. Alan is wonderful - I can remember doing my very first radio session with him many moons ago. We had a great chat on and off air. I mentioned that I had just been in Broughty Ferry with my girlfriends including my old singing pals - The Penny Dainties! They were all off to see Sex and the City but I couldn't go with them as I had my interview with Alan scheduled in. I might just go to the Flicks on Sunday.....

My mum came to Radio Tay with me and I was quite excited for her as she had never been in a radio studio before. So there she was sitting beside me while I was chatting on air. I just saw her face beaming. Alan played 3 tracks I think - He's A Tramp, I'm Confessin' and If It's Magic. He has been such a great supporter over the years and he runs a fabulous jazz venue in Arbroath at Hospitalfield - I haven't played there yet but would love to.

So I was really looking forward to Saturday - a whole day off and a well anticipated visit to Visocci's cafe in Kirriemuir for Egg Banjos - ie fried egg rolls. If you are curious as to why they are called Egg Banjos - you can ask me if you are really interested and I'll let you in on the secret - hee hee! Visocci's in Kirrie is the best! There is nothing like it!

London Music Show, Haverhill & BBC's Loose Ends

Since last checking in I've been out on the road with the Freternity band in Darlington at the beginning of June. I managed to squeeze in a radio interview with BBC Radio Suffolk before heading to London for the London International Music Show for 5 days supporting the launch of the iTalkguitar.com website. It's a cool new website for guitar nuts a bit like a Myspace for guitarists.

We arrived at the Excel Centre armed with all the exhibition bits and pieces as well as a 12 year old bottle of Glenfiddich whiskey. I saw some great guitarists including Joe Satriani and Paul Gilbert ...oh and Jason Bonham popped past our stand as well as Courtney Pine! It was full on to say the least!. I did find some time to whizz around some of the other stands and came across the Tascam stand where the guys there had a massive jar of retro sweets - Parma Violets the lot! Well I immediately dipped into the jar with permission of course. I thought it only polite to revisit the guys with my bottle of Glenfiddich and some glasses! I was made very welcome and we made "Whiskey O'Clock" at the end of the day a statutory requirement. In fact, we all really hit it off and as a lovely surprise when on the last day of the show the Tascam guys gave me a portable digital recording studio to take back to Scotland with me!!! I was so thrilled .. what a lovely kind thing to do and I will certainly make great use of it! Those guys Rawk! I think that some of them are going to try and get along to the Ronnie Scott's shows too.

We came back from the London Music Show absolutely shattered with having been on our feet for 4 days but thankfully we had some help on the stand. We had hired in a team of promo girls and guys. It was real team work.

Back from London and with a couple of days to cuddle the cat and catch up on normal stuff I was off to Glasgow to be a judge at the Young Entrepreneur Awards. The teams I was judging were fabulous but for me there were 2 stand out entries, one school from Inverness with their "Eat 5 a day" giant fridge magnets and the other school from Shetland with their GoEco bags! Very enterprising and lovely bright kids! I even bought 3 of the Fridge Magnet packs to take back home. I wonder who finally won the award? I should find out this week hopefully.

So - Thursday 19th June and it's an early flight to get down to Haverhill for a show at the Arts Centre with Martin. I wondered if my new pink suitcase would survive the baggage handlers??? Or even arrive at the airport at all! The Royal Highland Show was on and it was a complete nightmare getting to Edinburgh airport with massive delays due to the shear amount of traffic - almost missed the flight! Phew that was close!

Thursday 19th June Haverhill Arts Center
Martin and I have been doing shows with some props - lamp, table, picture of my cat...... but of course impossible to travel with when it come to flights. As it happens the Arts Centre had fabulous green battery lamps so I managed to pull together the props I needed for the show. I ended up actually swapping the lamp for a couple of CDs ... so I have my own travel lamp now and it looks very retro. All set for Ronnie's now!

Friday 20th June - day off so made the most of it and did some shopping for some on the road essentials.

Saturday 21st June - BBC Radio 4 Show Loose Ends with Clive Anderson.

It was an early start to get to the BBC for the show and once we got our sound check done it was straight onto recording. Martin and I played "If It's Magic" and the other musical guest was pop group "James" who played a song from their new album called "Hey Ma". The chat guests were Anne de Courcy author of "Snowdon", actor David Bradley who played the caretaker in Harry Potter, Peter Moffat writer of new BBC Drama "Criminal Justice", Rachael Stirling actress who was talking to Matthew Sweet ,presenter of BBC4 documentary "British B Movies: Truly Madly Cheaply" and comedian Todd Barry from New York who also starred in TV series "Sex and the City". What an interesting day that was! Loads of great chat and laughter after the show had been recorded.

So tomorrow I have a show in Harlow - so signing off for now as I need some extra ZZZzzzzz's!
