When I was a kid, a cabbie living on Colombo Street had a Ford Cortina Mk II for his or her work.
This was a far smaller car than the usual Holden Belmonts and Kingswoods and Ford Falcons that formed over 95 per cent of the taxi fleet in Wellington.
I don’t know if (s)he got much business as part of Capital City Cabs, easily the minor player in a town that was dominated by Wellington Taxis and Black & White and Grey Cabs Ltd.
Today I tailed a Toyota Belta taxicab. This was a Japanese import, and is better known as the Yaris Sedan or Vios in other nations.
The funny thing is, it didn’t look funny.
(Those darned Prius taxicabs look funny. They are even funnier on the motorway lugging hundreds of kilograms of batteries and hurting the environment. Especially in a city where cabs have largely been running clean natural gas since the early 1980s.)
The reason the Belta didn’t look as odd as the Cortina is more testament to how little cars have grown over the years.
Cabbies in Wellington have been defecting from the Australian full-size sedans to Nissan Cefiros and Teanas for a while, and Toyotas are, as in Dunedin, filling up the taxi ranks.
Ford diehards are going for the Mondeo, which is larger than the Falcon anyway in most key measurements (width, rear legroom)—just it has a smaller engine and there’s a diesel option.
If one considers that the Belta comes from the lineage of the Publica and Starlet, then it is tiny.
But if one considers that the Belta has a very long wheelbase and that it is as wide as mid-sized cars were a decade ago, then no wonder it didn’t look small.
Small cars are actually quite big, and big enough for most families these days. The only thing that keeps us thinking of them as small is snobbery.
In fact, the only thing that would look really funny in 2008 is an overly large car, such as a Ford Fairlane, being a cab, especially one not converted to LPG.

From Autocade

Toyota Belta/Toyota Vios. 2005 to date (prod. unknown). 4-door sedan. F/F, 996, 1296, 1495 cm³ (4 cyl. DOHC).
Essentially a booted second-generation Vitz, but designed at Toyota’s
Japanese studio rather than its French one, predominantly for Asian
markets. Sold also as the Yaris sedan in the US and Australasia; Vios
in most export markets. Interior duller than Vitz; handling acceptable
for a reasonably tall car.

One day last summer after a morning swim off Shichirigahama, we cycled
into the hills to explore Kamakurayama. A stiff climb led to a leafy
hilltop road that swept left and right past magnificent villas glimpsed
behind trees. It was lunchtime. The guidebook mentioned a soba
restaurant, and that was how we stumbled upon the faded magnificence of
the Rai Tei estate.

The imposing entrance is a relocated temple gate. Inside, you pay 500
yen which gives access to the hillside overlooking Sagami Bay, with its
labyrinth of paths winding between tea houses, votive halls, graves,

stone lanterns and statues. The entrance fee is deducted from your bill
at the restaurant, which is in the main building a short distance from
the entrance. On the ground floor of this handsome, well-worn building, delicious and reasonably priced
homemade soba noodles, hot or cold, are served at communal tables by
women in kimonos.

After the excellent meal, we spent an enjoyable hour walking and
exploring. A skeleton crew of gardeners clip and mow and rake, but
much of the hillside remains overgrown. Paths disappear into
undergrowth. The water features have decayed or been turned off. Every
corner brings a surprise. Part of the beauty is the sadness and
mystery of a once-glorious estate gone to seed.

Kamakurayama is a 15-minute bus ride from Kamakura or Ofuna Station.
For Rai Tei, get off at the Takasago bus stop. (From Ofuna to Takasago,
change to the Kamakura-bound bus at Kamakurayama.)

--Julian

Autsch.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aGreD1lH13Mw&refer=home

Hit the ALL SIZES button above the pic, and go for the ORIGINAL size. That will give you a closer look at the fittings and trimmings that went into all of this. The guy on the right has even lifted his kimono in order to have the full "shin guard" recorded by the camera.

1880's photo by KIMBEI KUSAKABE, taken in his Yokohama studio. Scanned from the original 8 x 10 inch hand-colored albumen print. It's over 120 years old, and still one of the great Japanese Armor studio shots from the 19th century. Taken with the wet-plate process, behind the ankles of the guy who is standing you can see part of the brace that was used to keep him as still as possible during the relatively long exposure. It came out very well !

Want to know more ? Better yet, want to make your own ? However, while the conservative politicians of Japan might be heralding this renewal of the geisha trade as a return to old-fashioned values, I can’t help but wonder if feminism or real women’s rights are ever going to make it to Japan?

Bernstein, who, despite sounding the alarm about a global credit bubble
as far back as 2006, could find himself out of a job after Merrill's
forced sale to Bank of America. (Too bad Bernstein's Merrill bosses
didn't heed his warnings.)

In Bernstein's eyes, the canary is
the U.S. mortgage market, but the silent killer of loose credit was an
international epidemic. "I don't perceive that most investors fully

For someone who thought was on
the verge of giving up her love for most things Japanese, I was proven otherwise
yesterday at the annual Nihongo Center Foundation Open House. The activity showcased
many things Japanese like the famous tea ceremony, Kimono/Yukata, Origami: the
Japanese art of paper folding, Sumo or Japanese wrestling, Japanese food and
other activities aswell that I didn’t expect would rekindled my love for the
Japanese Language, like the Nihongo speech contest and the karaoke contest.

The memory of kneeling on the
cushion on the tatami mat still brings a
smile to my face. And the sensation of having to taste the bitter green tea
just seemed pleasantly surreal to me. Yes, yesterday was the first time I’ve
tasted authentic green tea, so I made sure to grasp the tea cup tightly and
close my eyes as the liquid hit my lips so as not to forget the taste. And I
loved it.

My Yukata wearing experience was
no less either. It took about a couple of minutes to put on and all the while I
was being fitted with it, I felt so excited. So this is what it feels to be a
Japanese girl, I thought to myself. (^_^) For those few minutes, I felt like
someone important and special. The fact that someone had to help you put it on
and make it look beautiful on you just made me feel like a princess(?!). In fact, I think I liked the idea so much that I enjoyed the fitting part better than
having actually worn the dress!

There were a lot of people
walking around dressed in sort of typical Japanese fashion which was quite
amusing yet I don’t
think I saw very many Japanese people – only a handful. Not that I really
expected any… Hehe .The few that I saw though were quite memorable. There was
this nice Sensei during the tea ceremony and the very patient one at the Yukata
wearing booth. But I think the one I will remember the most would be that middle-aged
Japanese guy who gave us a little background about Sumo wrestling. Aside from
being a really jolly old fella, he actually got me to appreciate the sport. And
just for the record, I hate wrestling! So to get me to just listen about it is a huge feat already. Then again, surprisingly, like many other
things Japanese, Sumo turns out to be a rather more refined form (of wrestling)
compared to its counter parts. As I have learned, its the least violent(therefore
the least bloody,) least requiring contact from the players, the one with the simplest
rules and the quickest to play. So all in all it’s really not a torture to
watch like most western-oriented wrestling matches I have seen.

Aside from having drank, worn and
played Japanese style, I also of course ate Japanese style by sampling an authentically prepared Onigiri. Yum! Well it’s wasn't exactly as good as the ones
I get from Jipan but! I totally loved the rice. The grains were big and really
sticky which gave it the authentic touch to it so yeah, I liked it!

One of the many highlights of the
day was also meeting my online friends from Japinoy.com face to face. They were
very nice people, not at all like those scary Otaku fans I’ve seen in Anime
conventions. They were a very down to earth bunch when it comes to expressing
their love of Japan
so I think that’s totally cool... and most sincere.

After everything though, I guess, the best experience I got that day was seeing my college best friend Eunice. *A moment of shock* I couldn’t believe my
eyes. Eunice! My dear old friend there in the flesh! And a Nihongo teacher in-training too! Omg! To think I was also contemplating on taking a career in
teaching Nihongo! Is this the inspiration I’ve been praying for? It must be! Because
now more than ever, I am determined to go back to studying Nihongo again. Wow,
talk about a rewarding day! Domo arigatou gozaimasu Kamisama! (^___^)

Today is definitely the weirdest day of my existance.

Uhmm... as you may have noticed I ended my Vox break. Honestly, I started this shit to take out my frustrations. So the whole "I'm leaving Vox because I'm stressed" thing didn't work. It's frustrating. and that's ironic. So here I am, 36 hours later, writting a post. I feel stupid because I made up so much drama about it, and I couldn't even handle the break for a week. Whatever...

My day started good but then things got a little heavier...:

So... I woke up today and I decided I wanted to be an optimistic person. So I woke up with a smile, took a shower, played witht he cat [something that I never do], and headed school. I got there early [something I NEVER... EVER... do], and said hello to everyone, including my 32 year old japanese teacher, who made me say it in japanese He also made me translate almost five lessons from japanese to english/spanish, but he was being a bitch to everyone because he had a hang over.... WTF??? I know he's young and stuff, but man!, he even made this guy [who I think is mentally challenged] feel like crap because he didn't hear his instructions. Ok I know he's an adult and he has the right to drink his butt off if he wants, but he doesn't have the right to take it out on us. I don't care if his a foreigner, tequila betrays even the most loyal bitch, and last night I guess it was his turn. He ended the class earlier, and he asked us to leave. He was being rude. Never in my life I had seen an asian dude being rude to other people.

I went to Carls Jr. to get a chicken sandwhich, and while I was eating my food, this leady in a kidnapper van knocks on my door and tells me she's going to change our Internet connection. She said my mom had asked for their services and they were going to install a wireless modem in our house. So I call my mom and ask her if this lady is telling the truth. My mom said she had NEVER asked for their services, so she asked me to tell them to leave. The lady fucking got mad at me, because, according to her, she had to come all the way from her rancho just to bring me the fucking modem. Did we ever ask for it? NO. So I tell her she shouldn't been trying to sell stuff on behalf of a company she deson't belong to [her, and her husband weren't driving one of the company's cars, just a big ass brown van], so I ask her to leave. Next thing you know, the guy was yelling at me, saying bizarre things, telling me a bitch and such.

My polish neighbor moved to the U.S. a month ago because he's weird like that. He said he moved because the federals stopped his wife in the middle of the road to check is she was driving under the influence or any drugs, so he thought that wasn't fair for his family, so they got scared of the whole insecurity issue and moved to another country. Of course, I don't believe that shit, because last year, the federals were making an investigation on some mafia member, and they got into my house and his house. They even had an order and shit. I was scared as fuck, because I thought they're were following someone who had scaped from prison, and he happened to be in my backyard. Turns out my polish neighbor and his mexican wife, rented the lower level of their house to a family who happened to be drug trafficants. Obviously they investigated both families [my neighbor's and the family who was renting the house]. They discovered my polish neighbor wasn't legal in Mexico, so I guess they send him back to the U.S. since he's legal over there. Oh well, he comes today and tells me he has this whole bunch of stuff he wants to give me so I can sell in on a yard sale. I told him I didn't want it, but did he listen? NOOOOOO, he left it outside my house, in the frontyard, like if we were his fucking... I don't know... dumpster? He even let his son's dirty poop training basin there. I swear these people are fucking insane. One of these days, people are going to wake up and all they will see from that house, are the ashes filled with misery flying through the air, along with all the memories they had, as the sweet fire eats the rest of what's left from their beautiful home.

Something's burning outside [not my neighbor's house]. I'm guesing it's something big because I'm starting to get red eyes, and my nose is hurting because of the smell...

So that has been my day so far. I really wanted it to be a good day, but people just decided to go insane today. I guess that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and habe fun. I'll just hang around and watch some documentaries on CineTube.

See ya!

As the calendar turned and Typhoon 15 routed further south than expected, the weather has turned glorious. Yesterday, the sun was hot and the sky was a vivid blue. It was a quintessential fall day.

There are signs of the season everywhere:

    dragonflies--blue, yellow, red--darting and hovering

    tiny pencil-thin black lizards

ubiquitous spider's webs, with yellow female in the center and tiny male off in the fringes, now filled with debris and tidy packages of past meals

sheaves of rice hanging to dry in the paddies, turning from green to brown

trees full of persimmons the color of tangerines and soon to be deep, ripe orange

clusters of gangly purple cosmos daisies

prickly brown chestnut husks littering the ground

But it was something more amorphous that gave the feeling of autumn rather than Indian summer. The best I could come up with was that the sun shone from a slightly kinder angle, and that the humidity was comfortable.

I think I found the answer in Kevin Short's nature column in today's Daily Yomiuri. In the fall, there is "a shift in the quality of the light. During summer the dense, moist air diffuses the light, suppressing colors and completely blurring the edges of the landscape. Come autumn, however, the air turns crisp and dry, allowing colors and patterns to stand out in far greater brilliance. Not only will the sky be incredibly blue, but the moon and stars at night will shine brighter, and even the mountains on the far horizon will show up in sharper detail."

There were streaks of red in the sky tonight as the sun set. The middle of Fuji's cone was silhouetted black between bands of cloud. The crescent moon moved in and out of sight in the darkening sky.

--Julian
