MOJO Magazine raises banner o'er special year for Leonard Cohen appreciation

Allison Crowe joins Judy Collins, Katie Melua and more in MOJO Tribute to Leonard Cohen

Canada's bicoastal musical sensation Allison Crowe is among those invited by MOJO magazine to celebrate Leonard Cohen, master of song, on a soon-to-be-released tribute CD. Crowe contributes her cover of "Joan of Arc" - a favourite first heard on the 1971 Cohen album "Songs of Love and Hate".

It's been a wonderful year for appreciation of poet and songwriter+ Leonard Cohen - highlighted by all the live performances, and, the love that's flowed famously at the Glastonbury Festival and more concerts across North America and Europe.
MOJO magazine, one of the world's great music publications, has put together a delightful tribute - one well-designed and timed to raise the banner high over a year that's been very special for lovers of Cohen, just turned 74. As they explain it: "The November 1 issue of MOJO (cover dated December) is celebrating deep and moving music, the kind of stuff we need in the run up to the holiday period. The accompanying MOJO cover mounted CD will be made up of 15 tired and emotional masterpieces from the pen of veteran songwriter Leonard Cohen."

Alongside the MOJO cover-mount CD, there's expected to be plenty of love for Leonard Cohen reigning o'er the magazine's print and online editions, in Q magazine, and on MOJO Radio next month.

Allison Crowe is currently at the mid-point in her third European tour of 2008. It's a visit that's seen her perform to passionate audiences in Frankfurt, Paris, Siegen, Vienna, and now Prague, Czech Republic - after which she flies to the Highlands of Scotland for a concert in Durness, a fundraiser for the John Lennon Memorial Garden. Following this weekend in the Highlands, she performs in Edinburgh, before returning to North America where she’ll ready her annual Tidings holiday concert series in support of a host of charities from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts.

EMI Song-writing Camp / Popkomm / Record Deal

Tomorrow we're heading off to Berlin for the EMI song-writing camp. There are twelve songwriters from around the world and I am the only UK representative! Well excited. Many thanks to Peter Ende and the chaps at EMI Berlin for giving me this amazing opportunity to collaborate with some of the world's top writers. The event is taking place at the Gibson Guitar Showroom in Berlin, so no doubt I will be playing on some pretty swish geeee-tars! Yay!

After the EMI Camp, we have also been invited to attend Popkomm which is a fantastic world music and entertainment business international conference and festival. There will be a lot of music industry bods and up-and-coming musos there, so i'm gonna get my finest glad rags on! Ha! We've also been invited to Midem in Cannes which is another music conference(January 2009). Woop woop!

Just got back from an amazing few days in Hamburg. We have been offered a Major European Record Deal which is stupendously good news. It's a new model deal based around some great international partners, including a great distribution network, some amazing venues/stadiums across europe, a kick-ass marketing company and some incredibly successful directors / producers. I'm not really allowed to say anymore until the negotiations are well under way, but I will keep you all updated - it's all massively bonza and very artist friendly! To be honest, i'm pretty bowled over that all this is happening so quickly. Our management KRMB have done so so much for us in such a short period of time, and we're all incredibly grateful. Thanku kindly :)

We are finishing our debut album "Parrysland" in "Home Studios" (Hamburg - www.home-studios.com) with throughout December 2008. I recorded a handy-cam perspective of our first visit to check out this amazing studio complex, graced by the likes of One Republic, Lauryn Hill and Mariah Carey in recent months. One Republic were recording new material as we arrived. Scary! Acclaimed producer "Franz Plasa" will be working with us, as well as the "National Radio Symphony Orchestra of Germany" on string duties! Ahhhhhhhhhh, so excited. The desks were something else, and apparantly they will have the new hybrid SSL desks by december so we will be the first to use them! They also had the coolest gibson robot guitars and a gorgeous Taylor Acoustic that fell in love with. My heart aches. Watch the video and check out the chipmunk voice at the end - priceless:

Being on the road all the time has meant that i've had loads of time to get some really cool lyrics and melodies down, so there are lots of new songs in the pipe-line, and i'm really pleased with them. More to come in due course. Off to Berlin now, will blog upon my return!

Song for September: "Mute"

I figured I should wait until a few minutes into October before posting the Song for September, seeing as these posts were headed in that direction anyway. Ladies, gentlemen, and other/unclassified, I give you "Mute," the reflective ballad that closes the 1998 CD Chaos Town by my old band The Practical Man.

This is very much Mark's tune and I mostly stuck to running the recording gear for it, although I did sneak in a couple of notes on the guitar synth.

The Shaky Hands - Lunglight

The Shaky Hands, from Portland, Oregon, might be one of the more interesting bands playing this kind of indie rock. Their new album, Lunglight, came out earlier this month on Kill Rock Stars, and it's pretty good, I'd say. Kind of has the feel of 1960's British garage rock and late-70's/early-80's post-punk all with a distinctly American edge and thankfully, enough originality to stand out at least a bit in a pretty crowded genre.

What I dig in particular are the tracks where they break this mold. For example, the off-beat guitar with the butt rock fills and stomping drums on “Loosen Up” are really cool, and the kitchen sink percussion and clean, trem-picked guitars of “Air Better Come” are really cool. The chorus of “We Are Young” completely and unexpectedly changes the mood of the song, and I like that effect. “Neighbors” adopts more of a post-punk sound with heavy percussion and discordant guitars, and leads seamlessly into “World's Gone Mad,” which reminds me a lot of early Arcade Fire, with harmonized vocals and a pretty similar melodic sensibility. “No Say” is a quieter song until it's interrupted by a chaotic burst of guitar noise that turns into a catchy post-punk lead flourish that gives the whole thing a new sense of urgency. The driving percussion of “Settle On” makes the song for me. In fact, the best tracks on this album are the ones where the drummer steals the show, like he does on “Love All Of,” with its awesome almost-reggae percussion backbone and snaking guitar lines. Unfortunately, this song goes on way longer than it should, considering it doesn't really go anywhere. And, unfortunately, the laid-back folk rock of “Wake the Breathing Light,” while likeable at first, wears thin long before the end of the song, and the build-up at the end is just kind of too little, too late. I kind of wish these two songs weren't placed back to back because they definitely drag the second half of the album down, and I'd imagine a lot of listeners are just going to be skipping these songs after repeated listens. Luckily, the last track, “Oh No,” picks up the slack a bit. The violin and piano and the change-up in the bridge save this one, despite it being just as long as the last two songs. It's a great song to go out on, and a great song either way.
