I was walking to work, my attention cheerfully wandering, when a splash of sparkle caught my eye. Whatever it was, it was caught fast in a tumble of leaves, glittering mercilessly in the too-early sun.

I took a step or two before stopping - but the image was already burnt inside me - so my mind's eye studied the mysterious memory. Was it a brooch, its icy crystals warming in the light? Will it melt before I had a chance to look at it?

I peered closely:

It could have been a spangled veil - of diamonds, of pearls, of rain, of tears. It could have come from the hem of a petticoat - petit point crinoline and tinsel - and the lady had not noticed until later the ragged, wounded stitching. It could have been a swatch torn from a mantilla that had witnessed bloody sport in the ring and then fluttered hundreds of miles to rest in sweat and sadness amidst the thriving leaves.

I honestly did not know what it was. And it was thrilling. The ideas that were occurring to me were as myriad as the prisms sprinkled among the vine's comforting arms.

But ultimately I realized that this was not a denizen of time, light, closets or jewelry boxes. What I had been theorizing and dreaming on was nothing more than a conspiracy between a spider's woven bed and the evening's dewpoint. The droplets pulled from the rich, saturated air had been strung like glass beads, or galaxies, along the silken threads.

Scheming Nature had once again contrived to surprise me with her clever beauty.

Being able to tell a good yarn is a integral part of any communicator's utility belt whether they're in public relations, journalism or advertising. For many of us the reason we study and work in communications is due to our love for the art of tale telling and its powerful role in persuasion and conveying information.

To be a good story teller it helps to live a life where colourful stories are in abundance but for most of us wage slaves it's enough to be more aware of the little events in everyday life that with a touch of imagination and poetical license can become impactful stories that capture peoples' attention.

Creative writing is one way to build your tale telling ability. It familiarises us with the key elements of story telling - using concrete language, character development and story structure. As a practice it forces us to be imaginative and creative.

The internet has made many activities easier and more accessible and now creative writing is one of them with the new online writing community called weBOOK. This site has a plethora of writing groups and projects to get involved with. weBOOK allows you to upload your own stories and have them read and reviewed by other members who rank each story out of five and send you personal feedback.

My favourite group is the Pure Dialogue group which has the motto "exposition is for wimps!" The rule is to write a short story in pure dialogue. Despite the shortness of the stories many of them invoke excellent imagery. This story is one of my favourites - it's about a couples' final moments together before a meteor strikes. The stories that get the best ratings and feedback will be published and sold in an e-book.

weBOOK is well worth checking out and getting involved with you're keen on keeping your creative energy flowing and improving your ability to spin a good yarn.

<-- my orange swimsuit necklace, $10. available now in my etsy shop ! listening to the radio dept. and pondering today's events. things have been going well this year, so far. i've been getting some okay grades and have been doing, what i think, is an okay job. i just want something worthwhile to happen.. or to make something worthwhile. i find that when i watch the films of my peers i feel more obligated to make something. i made my one short film, but i think i ought to be making more. i find myself blogging about this everyday. it's getting so tedious. tonight i think i'm going to have a major jamie + music= ideas sesh. when i needed an idea for the film academy, all i did was listen to music for around, 10 minutes, and then i had some vague idea of something to do. i have five or six solid ideas for both shorts and features. some things have been vivid in my mind for so long that i can't ignore, and some are new. i just want it to be different, you know? i do desire to turn rob sheffield's life into film. i have such great cinematographical ideas for it. i want to do it so bad. i never want to forget him. but tonight, i have a date with myself.

I noticed there's something about my life that has changed dramatically since I started working and concentrating on my career. I’ve become a DULLER person or should I say an adult. Of course I’m old enough to become an adult but I’m actually referring to the kid in me. Every adult got a kid in him/her. But I think the kid in me is lost somewhere in the reality jungle.

It’s not that I don’t like my job. The problem is I LOVE my job. See.. that’s the problem. My attention now is focused on my job most of my days. Most of you reading this entry would think that I’m somewhat a weirdo who talks about nonsense. Well, maybe the weirdo part is true but that’s it.. I was a weirdo and I should always be a weirdo because that’s who I am (OK.. now you’re thinking that I’ve probably gone cuckoo because of stress in the work place. Will ya chill?? I’m still sane, OK.)

For those who just got to know me would probably think that I’m cuckoo but maybe not for my uni friends. Yup, when you’re in uni you tend to become a cuckoo but everyone seem to dig it. LOL :P. Very true though. I mean where else can you find a bunch of weirdos? It’s a UNIVERSE-city (university). Hmm.. Star Trek flashbacks are kickin’ in @___@. Hey, I am a geek. So chill.

So…. Back to the pressing matter at hand (OMG, sooo presidential. Bite me :P). Anyway, as I was saying.. when I was back in the cuckoo days, I dwell in so many imaginative and creative activity that well.. turned me into a weirdo. They say “misery loves company”.. or in my case, “weirdo have weird friends too ya know”. But of course, artists are lonely people who do not seek attention but just a place to mope. The funny thing is that all of my so-called weird friends think that I was a graphic student. So much for putting my degree course details in my profile page. Don’t you weirdos read a little??? :P.

OK, lemme get to the point here. I recall in those days I had a place to play and be imaginative. I’m not saying that daydreaming is an escape pod (OMG, soo Star Wars. *Ignore this geek goddess’s geeky words.*) but what I’m saying is that I need to be as imaginative as I was even more so now because reality seems to be grabbing onto me like a baby monkey hanging on to it’s mother (I sooo don’t carry around a monkey). I know it’s good to be grounded but still being in reality for too long without any escaping could make me die of boredom or worse.. turn me into a dull boring adult like everyone else. I SO DON’T WANT THAT.

SOMEBODY… R2-D2.. WALL-E.. BROODING POETS.. MISERABLE ARTISTS… ANYBODY.. HELP!!!!!

Obviously just another rant-a-blog..

XOXO

<-- taboo scarflette, $9. available in my etsy shop ! today was an 100% necessary blogging day. i was just revisiting my summer at nyfa a little. i was on facebook and came across some of the videos of someone i'd known there. just reminding me more that i need to do something. she's made a few things, mostly things i liked a lot. she's really talented in making quirky and lovable comedy. it just makes me want to make something. sometime i feel like i'm just going to defy the odds and explode with all my creativity, since it's already on the leak, and make some stop- motion loveliness. i just have to figure out what and when. i'm inspired by so many different things. i'm listening to sigur ros right now, saeglopur, and the idea flowing through my brain is a sort of cliche story, but one i could twist. right now i'm imagining it outside, and maybe i can sew something up. some small stuffed things or something. i'm imagining a sort of 'something that doesn't belong' story. maybe someone who will defy the odds. it's so cliche, which bothers me i suppose. there are so many ideas in my mind. i need to put them into action, and i've said it so many times. my main goals in life are to travel, love and share my love of life with the world, while also motivating people to really live rather than exist. i want that to be an underlying theme of everything i make.

today i revisited memories that are amusing to me. it's almost october, and october last year was hilarious, even though i didn't think so at the time. i had the shortest relationship ever with a guy i didn't really like, and haven't spoken to him since because i'm so embarrassed i did it in the first place. it took me a while to figure out the second part. i didn't want to talk to him, but i didn't know why. i made him cry and stuff, but it was only six days and it wasn't at all real love, but since he has a new girlfriend who some of my friends are 'friends' with [in reality they're quite capricious] they always bring it up to me. i don't hate either of them, i just don't talk to them because i'm embarassed. i don't regret it, i'm just embarassed about it. i think i needed it to let myself know that i can't and shouldn't just say yes to any guy, but so far, in my world, being single is just as good as anything else. my feelings are going in certain directions and my mind is wandering onto certain people, but i'm not as concerned with that right now as i am with my schoolwork. i need to focus, and for right now, not lose that focus until i can afford to.

Being adventurous is part of everyday life for most children. A friend of the family has a two year old boy named Zephyr and for him everything is an adventure, whether a trip on the bus or going to a cafe for a fluffy. His childish exuberance over the most simple, run-of-the-mill things makes life seem so much more interesting when I’m around him. A simple straw and spoon can transform into a snake and weapon or a nail and hammer. A pile of boxes morph into a castle complete with a moat and fearful looking gate. Maybe this is why children are so adored by adults – they’re perfectly connected with the power of their imagination without inhibition or social insecurity. They can play games, role play and decide at a whim that a pillow is fire that urgently needs to be doused by Fireman Sam.

Deep down many of us wish that we too still had the power of imagination at our disposal. I(magi)nation is magic – magi, the Latin must have the same origin or a similar meaning. Even though most of us give-up on the idea of real magic we’re still fascinated by it. That’s why so many of us are enthralled by Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or the Mahabharata; they jump start our imagination and take us to another world with no science based limitations or religious dogma telling us what is what and the all and all.

Something happens when we start school and get acculturated and socialised by teachers, peers and the mainstream media. Gradually our imagination is backed into a dark corner in the far recess of our mind and we’re told over and over that logic and reason are the supreme and only worthy form of knowledge to base our life on. Over time we forget that once our life was nearly a pure experience of the magic of imagination. Instead we become awkward and try to appear intelligent and fit into the knowledge norms of our society. The only time we get a glimpse of our latent magical power is when someone helps us cast it like a spell; through a movie, a book or a ripping yarn. But even then the content of these prompts are based on the norms of our narrow minded, unimaginative society that’s constantly obsessing about predictable occurrences like scandalous ministers and models taking drugs at pretentious fashion shows.

Somehow or another I want to lead my imagination out of its banishment and back to the forefront of my life so I think without fear and the creative energy begins to flow again like the waterfall I fell in on the weekend. That brings me back to the beginning of this post – adventure, kids are adventurous. Stories and movies are full of adventure with magical people, places and enchanted objects. The narrative of adventure allows our minds to open and like a genie coming out of a lamp our imagination comes forth to do our bidding. So we need to log-out from facebook, turn-off the TV and put the rambling journal articles down, grab a backpack, a map and set off an adventure to reclaim what is rightfully ours – our imagination.

After perusing old entries on my LiveJournal (pre-Vox), I realized that some ideas are worth reposting here as a reminder of things to never forget.

I miss the vast imagination I held as a child. These personal experiences make me smile:

the large, open living room floor was a cliff side; I was a mountain climber determined to reach the summit, fighting fear, pain, sweat, wind, rain, snow, heat or cold, and possible death!

building a house out of chairs, tables, and blankets; the house was high up amongst tall trees in a lush rain forest

my mother’s box of spare and unique buttons was a treasured, intricately decorated box of rare jewels and pirate's coins

feeling oh so fashionable with long nails made from strips of Scotch tape

swirls of dust, created by a wave of my arm in the sunlight emenating through windows, were ocean currents

my stuffed animals were alive and shared special secrets with only me

discovering shapes created by stars (not constellations) in the night sky

identifying shapes in cloud formations during the day

making brownies and cakes out of mud, even embellishing my recipes with pebbles, stones, twigs, grass and dandelions (then trying, and usually failing, to prevent my sister from eating these treats)

jumping and climbing from furniture to furniture (including the bed
or strategically placed pillows) so as not to touch the swamp where the
goblins could reach up and catch you (i.e. the floor)

evil creatures lived in the basement

goblins and the "boogy man" hid under the bed and in closets when you entered a room or turned on the lights, ready to pounce at any moment

the color green tasted icky, regardless of the type of food or candy

the color red tasted like sweet strawberries, even if it was actually not edible

segregating the various colors of M&Ms, Skittles, or Starburst, otherwise the flavors wouldn’t taste right

broccoli were little, lush trees; tiny people harvested them for us giants

a watermelon would grow in my stomach if I swallowed a seed

being a skilled scientist or a chef by mixing various bathroom toiletries together to create new concoctions (water, shampoos, soaps, toothpaste, mouthwash, bubble bath solution, toilet paper, shaving creme, etc) -- projects that turned out to be very expensive in the long run ;)

my dolls, especially my Cabbage Patch dolls, were alive but may have harbored evil intents -- influenced by seeing Poltergeist too young, I think -- I had to keep a blanket over them while I slept at night

It’s become somewhat of a cult hit even though in 1980 it was considered Olivia Newton-John’s mega-turkey. Stylistically, it sits uncomfortably between the 1970s and 1980s, as though there was a vacuum in between the decades. In one scene, Michael Beck insists to Gene Kelly that ‘It’s the ’80s’, but you know that it must have been shot in 1979 and people had not rebelled against disco at the time.
Of course, reality tells us that you can’t mark off decades so clearly: elements of the 1970s necessarily continue into the 1980s, and some of what we regard as 1980s style had their roots in the decade before.
But by 1982 there’s no doubt that one was in the 1980s: Rick Dees poked fun at ‘Disco Duck’ on Solid Gold and even ABBA no longer could do number-one hits.
While there aren’t clear decade-dividers, there is a sense among us, as people, to want to bring new things into each era. Who can forget the sense of optimism we all faced as January 1, 2000 came around, even though it wasn’t technically the new millennium yet? We saw the year number beginning with 2 and it was a big deal. All those science-fiction films predicting a new era in the twenty-first century brought with them a sense of anticipation—and those that didn’t forecast the end of mankind in 1999 suggested that we might be a nicer bunch in the 2000s than we were in human history’s most violent, murderous 100 years.
Here we are in 2008 and not that much has changed. We definitely aren’t nicer; in western countries we might well be more paranoid. But these are, in my reckoning, not twenty-first-century issues. This is leftover business from the twentieth century that we have not sufficiently dealt with, and we still have the opportunity to do something about it.
Terrorism and nutty red brigades were with us through much of my childhood but various western democracies thought they could turn their backs on them. Arafat’s PLO came to the fore in the 1970s, not the 1990s. The negative effects of globalization have been with us since the postwar period. As has communism in Red China, which has brought us the censorship that western media are only now, with days to go before the Beijing Olympics, making a song and dance about.
Just as a new decade does not begin to be “felt” till two years in, a new century won’t be felt till, I reckon, its second decade begins.
The twentieth might well have been marked by our arrogance and over-dependence on technology as the Titanic set sail. And as that century dawned, indeed we were bullish about globalization brought about by shipping routes and the British Empire. As the Titanic sank, we were reminded that we could never be over-confident about technology. We might have said a few years before that we had too much to lose from going to war, with the expansion of global trade, but humankind sank into the Great War with new innovations of aeroplanes and machine-guns.
Yet humans remain optimistic as we head into the 2010s. I would say there are more Americans hopeful about Sen. Obama’s race toward the White House than Sen. McCain’s at this stage, regardless of the latter’s attack advertising—because Obama has not defined things well. There is a sense of casting off the twentieth century. You see the same in so many areas as people question the economic system, politics, and how we are exposed to global disasters through the media. You also see questioning of the media. All of this inquisitiveness seems to be happening on a wider scale, maybe sparked off by authors and thinkers writing in the last part of the twentieth century trying to lay some useful groundwork for the rest of us as their ideas got out.
What sort of century is emerging? We would like to think that we can solve all the world’s problems because we are blessed with the ability and desire; yet institutions seem to constantly thwart our collective wills. Various individuals take matters into their own hands, be they international philanthropists setting up funds for poorer countries or bloggers trying to break the mainstream media’s deadlock on what we are allowed to know.
Meanwhile, corporations try to feed consumers products as a substitute for Orwellian soma—not necessities which we should look at having, but unnecessary items that take us away from being true to ourselves.
I don’t have the answers to what sort of century we will face. I know what sort of century I would like to face. One where people from all walks of life can realize their dreams, where people can receive the education they want, and where deceit and avarice are shown to be harmful to the collective good. One where imagination and innovation drive forward human progress, rather than impeded by society or corporations because they view them as threats.
The answer might lie in examining the changes in style between decades. Were they the result of companies dictating fashion or some deeper change in the Zeitgeist, driven by many individuals?
I like to think it was the latter. When the end of 1999 came about, I certainly was not told to head into town to see how crowded or fun Wellington city was. I just went. Something drew me to it.
There is something to be said about people driving the mood of the planet, and how we still have a chance to shape the twenty-first century’s destiny as we cast off the negative effects of the previous one.
We know where we goofed. We have seen it in the destruction of freedom or the greed of certain parties; we have seen it through a failure to understand other cultures or how institutions block aid from getting to the people. We know there must be solutions, and we now have a twentieth-century invention—the internet—where we can band together, make some noise and maybe generate real progress. We just need to wake up, realize what is useless in our lives, what we can do for ourselves and others, and get back to first principles. Technology, for instance, is here to serve us, rather than direct us into buying the next little toy to waste away whatever precious seconds we have each day.
We might define the new century through new energies (hybrid cars are so last century—we can do better), through new ways of reaching people in need (which we are already doing through unprecedented dialogue), and through redefining institutions to turn them into agents of change rather than stiflng collectives of people.
It’s through simplifying our lives and our directions that we can sense what we might want in the twenty-first century. Have a think—and maybe we can just put something out there into that Zeitgeist as this century really begins unfolding.

Years later, some anonymous writer, carried away by his imagination,
wrote Rudel's fictionalized biography. This style was called vida and
was quite popular in the medieval period. This vida became the basis
for a legend. According to it Rudel fell in love with Countess Hodierna
of Tripoli without even seeing her! He just heard about her beauty from
pilgrims, who were returning from the Holy Land. Rudell was so smitten,
that he took a long sea journey just to see Hodierna. Unfortunately,
during the voyage, he fell sick and was brought ashore in Tripoli
already a dying man. When Hodierna heard the news, she came down to the
shore from her castle and Rudel died in her arms.

The whole
legend was a fluke, and, naturally, it never happened. But it was
romantic! When 19 century Romanticism authors discovered the legend,
they just could not pass the opportunity and meet it the halfway. To
mention a few, Robert Browning, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Ludwig
Uhland, Heinrich Heine, Giosue Carducci created their poems based on
this fiction story. In the next century more epic poems and even an
opera were created as well.

Usually, they say that life is more interesting than fiction. This time it was the other way around.

Hello all, today I want to let everyone know that ive been very busy getting my freelance business off the ground. It's crazy that just a year ago I was just joking around with everyone that I start this whole thing. But now Ive got the resources right at my fingertips. So far Im working on logo ideas and basically a statement or a summary of what creaima is.

honestly its alot tougher than i thought coming up with a logo. what really stands out. Or as Seth Godin says whats "purple cow"? Take a look at the two i have up on this blog and tell me what you think. I can take criticism please tell me what you think. I need a look from another perspective. Also finding a good web host is something else that ive been worried about. Goddaddy sounds like not a good host. Someone know of anywhere else thats decent? Or maybe I just might buy a .mac account. So anyways look at what ive got with these two logos and tell me what you think. Criticism is greatly appreciated.
Creaima (by the way) stands for Creative : Imagination. and you say it like (kree aim uh).

It's always in the news these days and studies are being done on the effects of this - I'm referring to "overscheduling our children." I know a lady in town who has 4 kids and they all do 4 different sports!!!! I can't help but think "is she out of her bleeping mind?" I live in a big sports town, but I often wonder if it is actually the kids that want to play all these sports or the parents making up for something maybe they missed out on in their own childhoods.

The next town over has about 15 players on the girls middle school Lacrosse team, duxbury has about 65. I am very old school when it comes to this scheduled stuff. I really try to keep it to a minimum. When my daughter was younger and she would go on a playdate to my girlfriend's house, my friend would have a craft planned for the kids, or bake cookies with them or take them to a movie etc. This was very nice of her and took a lot of her time as well, but I always felt like it was too much and the kids should just go play.

When kids come to my house to play, I always say "No tv when you have friends over - go play." I feel like they just need to go outside (weather permitting) and catch bugs, kick a ball around, run through the sprinkler, play explorers in the woods, whatever. If it is cold or raining, they can play a board game, play cards, color or paint, or just play with dolls or action figures and use their imaginations. I feel like using one's imagination is becoming a lost art.

I don't allow tv when friends are over because it is something that takes no thought or effort or imagination and they just sit like vegetables and stare. There is little if any interaction between the children and almost no calories burned. If it is a slumber party or an extra long playdate then I give in a little. But, if a friend is coming over for 2 or 3 hours for a playdate, I say immediately "go play!"
