On Saturday this article came out in the Guardian, quoting lil' old me on the subject of image and identity in the workplace. Read it, you'll find my two cents' worth just before the end. Last but not least, y'see?

So I may not be a media mogul yet, but please, give me time. I'll get there.

I thought this was a really fascinating topic for an article, and one that the journalist, Anne Wollenberg, handled with great diplomacy and tact. If I wasn't so manic with a hundred other things this week, I might have even written my own post on this subject. As it is, you'll have to wait.

(I always like to leave readers with a cliffhanger, makes things so much more exciting, don't you think?)

Today I wanted to talk about the comparative treatment of Joe Biden and Sarah Palin in the media.

I wanted to make the case that Gwen Ifill has a clear ethical conflict because she stands to profit from the victory of Barack Obama.

I was going to go over all the things I thought Sarah Palin should say tonight to counter the underwhelming performances in her mainstream TV interviews.

I wanted to do a lot of things today, but I'm not really in the mood.

Suffice it to say that I am rooting for Sarah Palin in tonight's debate. I saw her Alaskan debates two years ago, and I remember being struck by how she commanded the scene. She could do the same thing tonight, so long as she sticks to her guns. She has a philosophy and ideological framework that informs her views.

With this, she doesn't need to know all the facts and statistics that gotcha journalism seems to think is relevant. She doesn't need to know the GDP of Australia right off the top of her head. Google can tell her that in three seconds. She needs to know only that our actions as a nation can be made within the aforementioned framework of conservatism...or that of liberalism.

The American people need to decide which one is for them. I believe that conservatism is the more common sense approach, the more effective way of managing foreign affairs and domestic fortunes. I believe that liberalism breeds discontent and dependency on a government which cannot possibly fulfill the promises it makes. Only the individual can chart his own life, secure his own liberty, and pursue his own happiness. We are made poorer by government largesse, poorer in spirit and poorer in character. And, of course, poorer in pocket.

Sarah Palin still has my support, and if she stays true to what makes her effective then we'll see quite a debate. If she tries instead to live up to the expectations of those who want her to fail (the media, in particular) then she will play right into their hands.

We'll know tonight what kind of future she has, or this race will continue to limp along inconclusively as it has for much of the past two years. After two years we are finally nearing the end, but what of it? Tonight I would not be surprised to see yet another unimportant milepost on this long, slow deathmarch of a campaign.

SkyWalker turned 4 years old today. I can't quite believe it has been that long. We went to preschool and although I still got the clinging to me hug and the request that I not leave and the sad face, there was no crying. The Princess and I went back less than an hour after we left so we could share the cupcakes. We stayed the rest of the time since his teacher and I agreed that 2 goodbyes would be too much for him. The Princess pretended she belonged there and tried like hell to do the water color painting and everything the big kid's were doing. And screamed at me when she couldn't get a second cupcake. SkyWalker talked to his teachers while I was there and seemed to do okay. He wasn't too distracted by us.

We went to Denny's for lunch with Grama and then he and I went hunting for leaves as the Princess napped. I'm trying to get him to say he wants to go out for dinner too so I can get out of cooking. He's being a goofball and non-committal right now.

Would you like to hear how much of a pathetic loser I am?

On Monday the Princess and I went to the Y to join. I filled out the paperwork and the guy gave me a bingo sheet and told me if I took it all home and filled it out (all heath stuff--avoiding soda and TV and things we already do) then he would waive the $100 signing fee. Sweet right? I said sure and left without handing the paperwork in. Great. Only it's not. Because now I've had time to rethink. And second guess myself.

I can't do it.

I was explaining yesterday why I didn't put SkyWalker in preschool at 3. He had only been home with me for a couple of months at that point, after having been in daycare for nearly 2 years. I wanted my time with him and I am glad I did it. I said that I would probably put the Princess in at 3 since I've been home with her since day 1. I realized today that although I have been home with her I have not had any alone time with her. Not more than half an hour here and there when Vader and SkyWalker are busy outside. I thought back to this last week and farting around Target with her and going to the library and how she's been in the best mood... and we spent one day walking around Target just kissing and singing to each other. And it was the best.

I have a million good excuses. I only have 2 1/2 hours of SkyWalker being in preschool. I only have 2 days I can go to the gym. Do I really want to spend all that money on an hour a week? Maybe 2 hours? I'm making even less money now (I always type monkey... wouldn't it be funny if we got paid in monkeys?), should I really be spending it? Do I want to do this now when I know I won't be able to go with a newborn next year?

But really what it comes down to is that I don't want to waste one single minute. I just dropped a night of work. I've been thinking about identity a lot lately--how I'm really not the goddesslibrarian anymore--and what I realized is that above all else, before anything else, I am Mom. And I might be a pathetic loser with high cholesterol, but you know what? I'm okay with that.

I can't seem to find my baby. Somehow between last week and today she has disappeared. And in her place is a little girl. She walks everywhere she can. She shakes her head no when she doesn't want something. She's starting to use some signs (she asked for more milk today). She helped Mommy unload the dishwasher--handed me each plate and bowl one by one. Last night while making dinner I got a colander from the cupboard.... she then opened up the cupboard, got another one and handed it to me. She hasn't used a sippy cup since yesterday. Instead she's drinking out of a big girl cup (that just the day before was a big boy cup). She seems to have grown overnight.

And if she's not a baby anymore... then what does that make SkyWalker? The past few days he's been Daddy's big helper. Making trips to Home Depot and patching the driveway. He tells me he's "working" and to stay inside and take care of the Princess. Today he told me to stay inside and that HE would take care of the Princess and she would take care of him. He's growing like a weed. Talking like a grown up. How could 4 years have gone by so quickly? One week from today he will be in preschool. Two weeks and he will be 4 years old. One year from today and he will be getting ready for kindergarten.

I heard the funniest thing the other day. K, my neighbor, is a wee bit um, terrified of having her third. She's going to be just fine and if you're not terrified then you'd have to be a little crazy. Anyway, she said something about me always making her feel better because I "have it all together" or some such nonsense. Isn't it funny how people can think you're has it together girl when you don't? Or is it the other way around? Maybe you feel like you're floundering when really you do have it together? It's funny how people's perceptions of you can be so different from the way you see yourself. And who's to say which is the right one?

One of the strengths of cultural anthropologists (as opposed to
political scientists or mass media researchers) conducting research in
the emerging field of media anthropology is that through their deep
relationship with a particular place, particular people, and particular
media, they are able to more holistically document the visible and
audible evidence of cultural production in all of its situated
complexity. Jeff Himpele, in Circuits of Culture: Media, Politics, and Indigenous Identity in the Andes,in
this way creates a comprehensive media ethnography of La Paz, Bolivia,
but he also goes beyond geographic constraints to look at the history
of media circulation and distribution in the country as its own unique
narrative and constitutive cultural process. Himpele performs an
ethnographic service to his readers by offering a focused perspective
of an emerging indigenous public media sphere, with increasing
political consequence, that largely has been unobserved, unnoticed,
unanalyzed, unarticulated, and thus unknown. At base this is a superb
example of an intimately engaged, meticulously researched longitudinal
ethnography.

Read more about Circuits of Culture: Media, Politics, and Indigenous Identity in the Andes here.

Project Mulberry. Park, Linda Sue. Yearling. 2007.

Julia Song and her best friend Patrick are members of Wiggle, a junior farmer's club at school. Together they want to win the state's ribbon for a animal husbandry, but farm animals are in short supply in their suburban neighborhood. Enter Julia's mom, who suggests the two raise silk worms. Patrick loves the idea! Not only will they raise an animal, but they will produce a unique product and be able to enter the silk into the arts and crafts contest as well. Julia is not as excited. The project is too Korean for her, something she struggles with silently. The tug of war Julia feels about her racial identity is a powerful part of this story, but so are the basic hurdles she and Patrick face as they try to work together on a very large project. A fifth grade male student, after reading this book last year, came to me to tell me how much he enjoyed the story. I can recall he was turned off, at first, by the book's cover, which he deemed "girlie." But what stuck with him was the strong and realistic relationship between the two main characters, a girl and a boy. In between chapters, Linda Sue Park has a conversation with Julia about the process of writing a story like this. I found this to be annoying, but it had a few insightful gems about writing. Luckily their "conversations" don't drag on and are over within two to three pages. A perfect read for grade 5.

FIC PAR

I started working regularly in our theatre as a senior; it was Dave's first year at college. He hailed from the tiny burg of Farmersville, in northeast Texas. He claimed to have never seen microwave popcorn before coming to college. In his high school drama group, he had been the Big Fish...got all of the leading roles, got all of the awards.

As a requirement for our acting class, we had to audition for the fall production, The Elephant Man, a script with 3 leading roles and a large cast of bit parts. Dave was certain that he would be cast in a lead...of course, he wasn't. It was a devastating moment for his ego...a moment that I call becoming the Small Fish. I was one of a few people who sat down with Dave in the days that followed and tried to help him understand the difference between being the Big Fish in high school and the reality of starting back at the bottom of the foodchain as a freshman in college.

Dave worked his lines (all 4 of them) for Elephant Man like a madman, determined to give his best performance for the 45 seconds that he was onstage. (Ironically, he had a bigger part than I did.) He applied that fervor to every bit part he had for the first year...and his roles got bigger. He and I shared a best-supporting actor nomination the following spring. At one point, he thanked me for the conversation that inspired him to work harder and become a better actor.

Last Monday night, I was trying desperately to recall my inspiring words to Dave.

You see, by the end of the Monday evening concert at MIR, I knew that I was out of the competitions. The talent that I saw in the vocal preliminaries made it pretty rediculous to expect that I would be continuing to the semis. And the semi-finalists for the song competition were posted at the end of the concert...I didn't make the cut there either.

It was my moment to become the Small Fish...swimming for my life in a much deeper pond.

I wish I could say the I handled it in a mature and Christ-like way...but really I handled it just like a college freshman...I had a tantrum. I moped around all night and slept-in the next morning. I only got out of bed to catch John Eldredge's session, and for some reason that had very little to do with John's content, I was better after that.

I spent the rest of the week in a much more teachable position, soaking in all that I could from the bigger fish that had stooped to share their knowledge and understanding with a group of tadpoles. Before it was all over, I had regained a sense that I could grow into this pond...if I worked hard, struggled with every line, every phrase, every note. I could be a Big Fish again...

...just like Dave.

That's only the beginning: after a phishing site is detected, countermeasures are launched to take down the phishing site. First, access to the site is restricted in popular browsers and security products, reducing its ability to lure and entrap consumers. The service then contacts the site owner, the ISP responsible for hosting the site, the domain registrar, upstream provider, and law enforcement to have the phishing site taken down. Once a site is taken down, the service will continue to monitor the site from various monitoring points around the world.
Source: Secure Identity Systems

So here I am. Unemployed and subletting a one bedroom from a ditzy art student who's gone to live with her boyfriend, in a neighborhood where my only choice for coffee is 7-11 but my only choice for groceries is Whole Foods. The apartment is decorated with things bought entirely at Christmas Tree Shops, which I know because they all still have the stickers on them. I'm not entirely sure why you wouldn't take the time to scrape a price tag off a framed photo or decorative shelf, and I wonder sometimes if these things were purchased for the sole purpose of the sublet. Or maybe she just forgot.

The apartment is big, though, and overlooks Comm Ave. The view isn't quite as impressive as the size, limited essentially to another blocky apartment building, a billboard of a child with a cleft lip, and a small diner in which you can apparently get not only waffles and pancakes, but also ice cream. The building must be from the 1920's, and from what I can tell hasn't been touched since, except for the bathroom which was redone in that period where people thought pink tiles were a good idea. In dim light the whole place could maybe pass as shabby chic, but in reality it's more shabby than anything else.

And then there is the job hunt. Thanks to the craptastic economy, getting a job is proving difficult. And finding a job in higher education student services with a Master's degree is proving nearly impossible. In total, I've had 7 phone interviews, 3 in-person interviews, and 0 job offers. Until this week I had been limiting my applications only to Boston, New York, and D.C. However I have come to realize that in these markets an M.A. and 5 years experience means absolutely nothing. I might as well be telling them I just completed my GED. And so I have expanded my search to more suburban areas: Chestertown, Oakdale, Knoxville, etc. I had refused to even consider places that weren't major cities on the Eastern seaboard until a classmate started racking up interviews. That is, interviews for jobs in Utah, Arizona, Pittsburgh, and Jersey.

In my most recent in-person interview, as one of the "finalists" for a position at Prestigious Technical University, an Associate Dean announced she didn't understand why I had been selected since I do not have university residence life experience (the position, though somewhat related to residence life, was by no means a "Res Life" job). Which made me think that putting on interview clothes on an 85 degree day and sitting through 5 hours of interviews was essentially a HUGE FUCKING WASTE OF TIME. But no, thank you, I'm just honored to be considered.

So the search continues. And as I whore out my resume and strategically unpretentious cover letters on countless university HR websites, I find myself wondering: Is this what my life is supposed to be? 27 years old, unemployed, and single? In graduate school I was a student. In England I was American. But now who am I? A former graduate student. Formerly employed (-able?). Sallie Mae's indebted slave. Single. An over-educated, 7-11 coffee drinking, organic food eating, broke chick who still has to rely on her parents for financial support.

Shit.

The documentary, Protagonist takes a creative approach to
the pursuit of a better understanding of Greek tragedy and contemporary human
tragedy. The official website describes the movie in the following words.

PROTAGONIST explores extremism through
contrasting stories of personal revelation. The film features four individuals
who have been devoted to personal odysseys - a cause, a quest, an ideal - to
the point of total consumption. At first glance the characters appear
disconnected: a former German terrorist, an "ex-gay" evangelist, a
bank robber and a martial arts student. But as their stories unfold, one starts
to see the parallels between the uncommon, common experience of these four men.
Each character embarks on a journey for valid reasons, only to find himself so
deeply embedded in the cause that he becomes the opposite of what he had
intended. He is blind to this fact, though, until the forces of fate and
character boil and distill to a single moment of dark epiphany. In telling this
echoing story, the film asks: what is the path to extremism? In responding to
the turmoil of life, where does one draw the line between the reasonable and
the unreasonable? And how does one recover from the delusion of certainty? The four stories in PROTAGONIST are told in parallel threads and structured
like a multi-layered Greek drama. Directed by Jessica Yu and produced by Yu,
Elise Pearlstein and Susan West, this adventurous documentary is inspired by
the works of the 5th century playwright Euripides. The film uses quotes from
his plays as thematic chapter headings, providing a provocative common link
between our contemporary stories and lending them a timeless quality.”

http://www.protagonistthemovie.com/

Each of the characters in this movie basically agrees to banish some aspect of themselves in exchange for acceptance and a sense of dignity (whether that be real or imagined). Each of them experiences some element of uncertainty as a child and makes use of solutions that present themselves to regain a sense of certainty, power, and a sense of empowerment or belonging. All experience a crisis of faith at some point in time - a moment when they must face the fact that they are not who they are pretending to be or that the group they have identified with is not what it claims to be. Each experiences an epistemological crisis that changes their lives.

Question for Comment: Have you ever been certain about something and
then lost that sense of certainty? Have you ever been a member of a group to
which you were totally committed and then dropped out of that group as a result
of some sort of disillusionment? What is it like for you when you realize that
you may not think what you had been thinking or that you may not belong to a
group you thought you belonged to

It certainly seems that I am quite late to the game; the blog world that it is. In thinking of why would I write a blog - more so, why would anyone on this green earth want to read my blog - I can think of only 3 reasons.

1. You are completely bored and chained to a computer that only allows blog reading;
2. You have an insatiable love of muffins and must know what this is all about; or
3. Your curiosity has been tempted by my ever-so-crafty tags.

In the spirit of full disclosure - I have no idea how to "blog" nor do I even accept the word as a verb. However certain recent events are blowing my mind, and for the sake of sanity, I'm throwing my questions out to the VOX world.

Here goes...

Is the balance between nature & nurture equal across peoples?

What is race? Seriously, I do not think it is all the color of ones skin anymore based on my experience

Religion - is it better to have it? have it then lose it? or never have it at all?

What is a family? What is the concept of family? The core elements of a family? And what is the tie that holds a family together?

Any words of wisdom out there are welcome!!!!!!!
