Hannah Jumped her first real jump last night
She had jumped before but it was from the trot and more like just a extra big trot step
Last night she jumped in canter, didn't loose her position and didn't freak out, pony kept going nicely and all was well.

I am so proud of the progress that chick has made this summer

Weekend Fun

Last weekend I went to watch some of my friends jump their horses. It was a practice event and everyone seemed to have fun. It was hard taking photos of the horses jumping as it was late in the afternoon and I was losing light. I did get a couple of good photos as follows.

These lovely ladies are riding friends of mine...all much younger and braver. Here they are getting ready to warm up their horses.

This is a photo of Stef with her lovely Arabian mare Aurora. Aurora is very small probably 14.1 hands and so very pretty. Not the type of horse you would usually jump but Stef loves to jump so Aurora goes along.

One more photo of Beth and Lorenzo. Lorenzo is a pure Spanish Barb horse from a line of hroses that can be traced back to the horses that the Spanish brought over to Mexico and America. He is tall for his breed at 15.1 hands and has lots of color. Beth had just started Lorenzo jumping on Thursday and this photo was taken on Saturday!

I had a devil of a time take photos as the sun was setting and my big tetephoto lens wasn't working. Took these photos with my 28 -80 mm lens. Next time I'll take my 70 - 300 mm lens and hope it is earlier in the day for better light.

Last photo is of the evening sunset over the Silver Bell Mountains in Marana, AZ which was wonderful.

Alrighty the details of the show.

getting there was an adventure and I'll not go into all the details of that, but suffice to say my truck was not used and we had to make a stop for a minor(not dangerous) trailer repair.

Here are the mares looking stylish in there PJ's and wanting breakfast, gimme a break it was like O' Dark 30 at that point.

Show day starts at 0800 so Hannah and I were up and riding by 0730(ish)
Both ponies settled in very well and we had some hopes for a good dressage section of the show.
Here is Hannah and Nysa, Nysa is a bit tense but moving well.

Here's Me and the Holi just warming up

We both had three classes Prix Caprilli, Intro Test A and Intro Test B
I got first in all three *glee*
Hannah got 4th in Prix Caprilli and then 5th and a 6th in Tests A and B I think, I'm not exactly sure. Considering there was a train going by during test B I'm just happy Hannah got a ribbon at all.
Oh and my score from test B was 71.5% and that won Holi and I walk/trot Dressage Champions, netting us a set of polo wraps :D I love my new mare.
After Dressage was break time, lunch time, pony snack time, make ponies happy by letting them rest time.

Next up Hunter classes, Nysa and Holi are not really hunter ponies but it's just two more classes we can enter and two more opportunities for the ponies(and us) to get some showing experience.
Here are both of us getting warmed up, notice the different outfits on us and the ponies, yes we are crazy enough to show in a sport that requires outfit changes.

Our first Class in hunters was Walk/Trot hunter EQ, that is judged on how we ride(not on the horses) I got 4th, being beaten by a woman that didn't keep her heels down and a woman that didn't two point consistently(she dropped it when the judge wasn't looking)...I'm confused.

Hannah didn't place, it was a large class of 10 and I think she didn't get a few diagonals right.
After that was Walk/Trot Hunter Under Saddle, that is judged on the horses manners and way of going, overall suitability to be a hunter.
Here's Hannah in that class, I made her saddle pad, it has her initials on the other side :D

Holi took 5th and Nysa took 6th, there were 11 horses in this class, and like I said neither pony is really a hunter so we were pleased with those ribbons.

At the end of the day...

Two good ponies, two good mares, both a rare thing.

Now it is fall, time to trail ride, time to relax and settle into the rhythms of winter, to bond with our mares and not worry about the pressures of showing until spring.

Whole Wheat Eggs

One day a five-year-old daughter helped her mom put away groceries. She didn't know she'd purchased brown eggs instead of the usual white. When the young girl opened the carton, her eyes widened in amazement and she exclaimed, "Look, Mommy, whole wheat eggs!"

When our sons were growing up, we heard them say many such things that made us laugh. My dear wife Chris even wrote them down in a notebook she kept for each of our boys. Today, looking back, their exclamations and expressions are even more dear to us.

God is our heavenly Father. He must delight in the things we say and do as his dear children, too. Whether we're five years old or ninety-five, we still say and do things that are curious, delightful, and memorable. I like that about God. Don't you?

As I think further about my lesson for the week, Philippians 2:1-11, I am meditating today on verse 2. Paul, writing from prison, tells the Christians in Philippi:

"Then make my joy complete, by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose."

We make God's joy complete when we are one in spirit. In a family, at work, in the community, and at church, there are things we do together. Then we look back on the success and we say, "Wasn't it great? We were truly one in spirit as we did that."

We make God's joy complete when we are one in purpose. God has a purpose for your life. God has a purpose for my life. God has a purpose for our lives together and apart.

Maybe your purpose is to find the person or persons with whom God wants you to complete his joy by fulfilling your purpose. The Christian life is not a Lone Ranger act. Remember, even he had Tonto. And they had their horses, too. In other words, we're stronger and more effective together than apart.

I once sat at a workshop on new forms and ways of worship. Among the many things I learned that day was this. We each have spiritual gifts and we have half-gifts, too.

What is a spiritual half-gift? It's half of a gift that needs the other half. So, find that person or persons in your own setting who will help you use your half-gift.

I see this in church life a lot. A leader will pair with a follower in a task. Think of how brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright did what they did. They each needed each other's gifts and abilities to get their first flight up in the air.

So be looking around for that one or several who have the gifts you can match up with yours to do something that makes God's joy complete.

Will you do that?

Promise?

Come on, make my joy complete.

Make God's day, too!

A horse I once knew...

Letter I sent a horse magazine

None of the sports Ms Bauer mentions in her letter* (Putting Racing's Troubles in Perspective, Equus 372) involve training horses under a rider at a year old, nor asking them to run flat out when only two. Making a horse run so hard and so far when their kneebones aren't even finished growing yet is certainly abusive. Comparisons have been made between a three-year-old horse's running the Kentucky Derby and a ten-year-old child's running the Boston Marathon.
True, I have seen far more whipping and spurring in barrel races than in flat racing or steeplechasing - in fact, I've yet to see a jockey even wearing spurs, let alone attempting to kick with such short stirrups. I've also never seen a jockey beating on a horse from start to finish as barrel racers do. However, I've never seen jumpers or eventers hitting their horses as much as jockeys.
How could genetics not be involved when horses who broke down on the track, and whose parents broke down on the track are being bred? Breeders are well aware of lines that produce horses with breakdowns, but stick to them anyway.
I've been riding and adoring horses for 32 years, and once very much enjoyed watching all forms of racing. Making friends with a woman who rescues ex-racehorses in Jamaica opened my eyes to unthought-of aspects of the industry (it is indeed an industry) and broke my heart. The before-and-after photos of her "beasties" make me weep.
Thinking only of making money and not of the horses' welfare is hardly a problem in Jamaica alone - it's worldwide - so it is obviously not a mere handful of individuals who think that way.

Deep down, I knew it was coming...

but that doesn't make it any easier...

Alchemy collapsed in his paddock yesterday. Mrs Ray called Jamie. Jamie called me (8 times - my phone was in the car though, cos i was out being thrown around and misbehaved with by a little horse called Rossi...) in tears.

Dr Augustein says "no more". Al's legs are too weak to hold his body weight - just in the last week, his near fore has shrunk in size, under the calcifications on his knee... it looks like a stick, compared to the other legs.
My poor Al. So. Bad weather today and yesterday meant they couldn't... dig the hole... so... they start digging tomorrow (wednesday) and the next day (it has to be deep, and big, for a horse's body) and then friday... friday he goes.

my heart is breaking. but i knew that it was coming, after the scare a little while back. and this time i know it wasn't because of us - we really have been trying hard to get him out a lot, and we thought he was doing well.
it is so hard to see our magnificent Alchemy so ... frail and.. weak... he's still so beautiful. from the neck up, you would never know he's 28.
i don't know what Stormy is going to do when Al goes.
And Ex. He's going to be ... all alone when Catch goes out. I'm just going to have to do my best to get down there as often as possible and take him out.
but now, with me going away...
Jamie can ride him. If she can handle going down to the stables, that is.
Al is her boy, more than mine. and she had to have Rusty put to sleep today too. she's having a rough time.

and the boy is also having a rough time.
i didn't sleep at all last night. not even 5 minutes. i am so worried about him. my heart aches for him. to hear him so down. he is so miserable there. it's not what he was expecting, or wanting. and there's nothing i can do. which makes it SO DAMN HARD.
less than two weeks... then i can try and make it better. try my hardest.

i'm trying to get some work done - to get some money in, to cover bills while i'm away - but i am so tired, and so worried and so low... i just can't focus.

i'll keep trying, of course.

new kid on the block

As promised some photos of my new pony, she is 14.1 Hands tall and 14 years old, her name is Holiday but goes by Star around the barn, I may call her Holli, because there are a ton of horses with stars called "star"

here is Star in the trailer just as we were leaving my friends place, Star hauled like a champ.

This is my friend Anna when she was competing Star, she's a cute pony and I hope to do as well as Anna did with her.
For now the plan is that my student Hannah takes Nysa to be her pony for the next year, that gives Hannah the next show season to ride Nysa and hopefully do very well on my good pony, that will also give me one show season to ride Star and learn her in's and out's, once I know her I'll let Hannah get to know her and Star may beome Hannah's pony for the next year or so, so long as Hannah doesn't grow too fast, child has shot up this year lol.

Last roundup on Cattaraugus wagon train

Here are a few final photos from the Cattaraugus Bicentennial County Wagon Train, which I was lucky enough to be invited along in late August. Jim and Dolly Little got plenty of well-deserved recognition for setting up this 14-day, 180-mile, slow-motion road trip.

There were ample speeches and fond recollections when everyone gathered at the trail's end in Little Valley, NY.

They sang songs, rode unicycles, and let the horses have the rest of the day off, parking their rigs in downtown Little Valley.

Fittingly, "God Bless America" got everyone up on their feet.

And then everyone relaxed, had a little something to eat, and said their farewells.

Bundoora Homestead - Off Plenty Rd, Melbourne Victoria

The beautiful Bundoora Homestead/Art Centre, having undergone a $2million restoration, is a listed heritage property, cafe and art gallery showcasing stunning exhibitions including an excellent and captivating collection of work pertaining to the local area.

One of the most impressive pieces hangs in the restaurant - a large etching lined with gold leaf, carved onto oiled Victorian floorboards! It shows "Luraline" (see story below) in a striking stance over Wallace's grave. Simply stunning!

Another piece I was quite taken with depicts a stream of cars pouring out from two chimney stacks. If I remember correctly it was entitled "The Smell of Smoke - Plenty Rd", (or something similar). Within the picture was also the collaged message "no more smell of smokey fires, now only the smell of burning tyres".

There was another which consisted mostly of brightly coloured acrylics (fluoro colours - heavy on the 'hot pink' ha). Within this painting there were images of: a youthful girl, trees, a radio, a cockatoo, etc. The artist's placade to the side described that she is attempting to convey how Bundoora Park is a magical place full of diversity and her wonderful feeling of well-being when visiting the park. I have to agree with her!

Much of the stud farm grounds are now a glorious and diverse 180-hectacre parkland, which also includes golf course, wildlife sanctuary, working urban (children's) farm and of course the stables and graves in the heritage Cooper's settlement.

Built in 1899, the Homestead is a magnificent Queen Anne style federation mansion registered by Heritage Victoria and certified by the National Trust. The interior is enhanced with fine quality stained glass, rare architectural pyrography and other impressive examples of plaster craftsmanship.
Bundoora is home to Mount Cooper, the highest point in metropolitan Melbourne. Mt Cooper is located within Bundoora Park, a large (180 ha) public park.

The Horse - Wallace

Wallace, son of the 1890 Melbourne Cup winner, Carbine, was destined to become Bundoora Park's best known resident. A majestic galloper, Wallace had won the Caulfield Guineas, Victoria Derby and Sydney Cup by the time he was three years old. It was his 22 years at stud however, for which he is most renowned - the progeny of Wallace competed in a total of 949 races, winning $246,000 pounds in prize money. In 1917, aged 25, Wallace died and was buried close to the Bundoora Park stables where his grave was originally marked by a flat stone cairn inscribed with his name. Legend claims that Wallace is watched over by a ghost horse. Late at night, if you walk close to his grave and hear the clip clop of hooves, it is thought to be his stable mate, a mare called Lurline, coming to see who goes near him.

Fri-Dae

Lemme see
Got up and got distracted by the man love online, took forever getting out to the barn.
Finally got to the barn, fed the horses breakfast, got a hug from S for making him cookies "they are five kinds of delicious", let the disgruntled horses out for the day, scrapped plans for a morning ride, Nysa was in a MOOD for being inside sooo long, cleaned stalls and set them up for later, started checking the bearings on the trailer I use, got all the outer wheel bearings checked(need one new one) got two of the inner bearings checked(I trashed them in the course of removing them), gave up on trying to check the other two inner wheel bearings. Ran to town for the new bearings, got them packed with grease and installed.
Ran home for some more time with the lover man, ate some lunch, talked about our plans for the day, said goodnight and left.
Back to the barn to ride, got all three of my kids in the barn, groomed and saddled Nysa Pony, had a great ride, worked her to the music I want to use and learned a few things, when I got done S showed up and said he was going to work on clearing trees from the fence line so I offered to help. Spent about 2 1/2 hours felling threes and chucking the downed limbs over the fence.
Ran home and took a shower, got dressed pretty cause after a day spend being greasy, sweaty, hot and narsty I wanted to be girly, S picked me up and stopped in his tracks at the sight of me(herhhe) went to The Dark Knight(was good the second time around) and met up with P and her kids.
After the movie back to the barn, S had to get his horse in, I had to get my horses out, the stars were AMAZING last night.
Home in time to see the love man before he went to work.

I think my day was well spent.

Kur

No not a bastard dog, a dressage test to music, a test I make up myself.
However it's not as simple as picking a song and having some fun, the music must match the foot-falls(or hoof-falls) of my horse, so you have to change the muzacks as the gait changes, from walk, to trot, to canter and back round again so Miss Chereh I could use some help determining what time measure Nysa pony travels in, is she in 4/4 or 2/4? LoL
I have plans for one, big plans, I want to do my Kur to some nifty music, something that will make a stuffy over 80 dressage judge faint, or at the least get a quite disgusted look on thier face.
My Music Choices you ask?
Superstitious-Stevie Wonder, I'm fairly certain that this will work for Nysa's free walk and canter.
Brick House-Commadores, this might be a hard one to fit in but I love it, expecially sense Debbit Mcdonald rode part of her Kur to it on the fablous Mare Brentinna, gotta love a powerful Mare being ridden to a song like this
Hey Bartender-Floyd Dickson, this is a good trot song, with perhaps some walk moments, I'll have to feel it out
I plan on having these on my MP3 Player tomorrow and doing some messing about with them, I probably won't do a Kur at the show coming up in Sept but I'd like to have one worked out for next show season.

The wagon train ended Friday, and I'll have a few more photos to share shortly. 'Til then, a couple from pauses along the Cattaraugus trail and thereabouts.

This here's Jim Little, who pretty much organized much of the 2008 Bicentennial Wagon Train and Stagecoach Run. Quite a guy. He didn't even mind when some guy with a camera started hanging out his stagecoach window to shoot photos.

I have got to get one of these vests.
