The press is spinning this as meaning the end of any hope for Senator Clinton to be Senator Obama's running-mate.

Senator Hillary Clinton will be the keynote speaker at the Democratic
National Convention on Tuesday, August 26th - the second night of the
convention. August 26, 2008 is also the 88th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment
to the Constiution, which allowed women the right to vote. To honor this historic
anniversary, Senator Clinton will be joined on stage by all the women Senators and Michelle Obama.

I don't know if it means Senator Clinton is no longer being considered as vice-president. Considering the significance of the date, this comes as no surprise to me. I also do not think this is anything that Seantor Obama even had to think about. The media is growing bored and they are trying to stir something up.

I advocate for Senator Obama and the Democratic Party. I'm also a strong advocate for Senator Clinton. In my heart I believe she should be Senator Obama's running mate. I'll continue to advocate for Senator Obama regardless of his selection. However, if he doesn't offer the spot to Senator Clinton, I think he is settling for second best. I feel very strongly about that.

19th Amendment to the United States Constitution

"The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be
denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of
sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation."

This is no surprise given the promotions that Sen. Obama has been getting in the media: ‘Obama elicits more excitement than McCain’, according to USA Today.
I want to be the voice of reason but 21 years in communications tell me that this is important. If your brand, personal or organizational, elicits excitement among its constituents, then you have a greater chance of mobilizing those people when you need them.
Even when it comes to politics, to get messages across to voters, one has to resort to the tried and trusted techniques of branding and marketing.
There are few in the present generations who will, as many bloggers do, investigate someone’s voting record or dig deeply into their histories. It would be nice to say that presidents are not elected based on how much excitement they can generate. Or that we should place greater emphasis on other qualities like honour and sincerity.
While some might point to exceptions, such as the Tory victory in the UK of 1992, I beg to differ. That campaign was hard fought by the Conservatives and depended on party unity—which was sorely lacking in 1997 when Tony Blair was elected. The National victory in New Zealand of 1990 was a result of the cry for change and the belief that Labour was leaderless.
And the cry for change is such a powerful message in politics, because politicians understand our nature: even the vaguest change is better than the strongest, best defined policies if a party has been in power for too long.
Labour in the UK in 1997, National in New Zealand in 1990, Labour in New Zealand in 1999, Clinton in 1992—all these are examples of that message. And that, too, “excites”.
Sen. McCain should not pursue an excitement route himself, but he should capitalize on mistakes that the Obama campaign is making with greater regularity. The New Yorker gaffe—where Sen. Obama felt the need to comment rather than appear presidential and above satire—was an opportunity missed. Meanwhile, I wonder if people appreciate the maverick, go-it-alone style of John McCain, which plays well in the Senate, but could be symptomatic of future Cabinet divisiveness under his administration.
A winner is by no means clear, and a week remains a long time in politics. Months, as Sen. Clinton will attest as she went from dead cert to second-best, are an eternity.

Some staff member was truly inspired to come up with this scheduling idea (and should get a raise as a result).

It was announced today that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton would travel to Unity, N.H., on Friday for their first joint public appearance since she exited the presidential race and endorsed him.

The town, tucked in the state's western corner, not only has the
perfect name for the message the Obama campaign wants to impress upon
disgruntled Clinton supporters across the nation, but it also precisely
split its support in New Hampshire's Democratic presidential primary:
He got 107 votes, she got 107 votes.

And then there's this demographic tidbit from the 2000 Census, which
put the town's population at 1,530 people. Among all ages, for every
100 females there were 101.8 males. But for every 100 females age 18
and older, there were 97.7 males.

So on the gender front, pretty much a draw.

I get the feeling this could be a wipeout this time, but I've been wrong before. The party in power now (the Republicans) are reviled and are running a candidate about whom they're only mildly enthusiastic. Ironically, it's because they think John McCain is a sellout and is not as much a party loyalist as they want. He has to walk a fine line between his perceived image (maverick) and his actual policy positions (which are now in line with the NeoCon wing of their party). If he leans too much on his perceived image, he alienates the neocons. If he leans too much on his current positions, he alienates the right wing Democrats and the independents.

On the Democratic Party side, those that support Barack Obama are enthusiastic about him. The only thing that can prevent Barack Obama from winning easily is if he alienates enough of Hillary Clinton's supporters to stupidly vote for John McCain. The difference between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is small. The difference between Barack Obama and John McCain is huge. If her supporters stay at home, there is still hope. Bob Barr is running as the Libertarian Party candidate and may appeal to enough Republicans (probably not). I think enough clear-minded Hillary supporters will support Obama by election time, but they're upset by their favorite candidate's concession and her narrow loss to Obama. She had a legitimate chance for the nomination, but her team failed to capitalize on her huge lead at the start of the election. Funny enough, she wanted to use the superdelegates to win the nomination, but Obama was able to get enough momentum in the middle of the election to secure the nomination.

As the economy goes from bad to worse, more people are going to want change, regardless of how they normally vote. I also like the fact that Obama has already hit back on many of the McCain team's accusations. This is already going better for him over John Kerry. The Swift Boaters and the flip-flop charges had sunk in enough for some Democrats and independents to vote for President Bush, even though job satisfaction for Bush was extremely low. The leaners voted against Kerry rather than for Bush. I get the feeling this time around that the high price of gas won't change and enough people will be convinced to give the Democrats a chance. I sure hope I'm right come November.

June 6, 08: Guest "RIGHT" AMITY SHLAES (The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression) got the ball rolling, calling for a new CENTER in American Politics. She's the first conservative I've heard who says LIBERAL is NOT a dirty word!

The discussion begins with a conversation about Obama's victory over Hillary Clinton. Amity says that Clinton represents the old party, and that Clinton loyalist and advisor Harold Ickes' father helped create that old party. But she also says both parties are in trouble.

Arianna tells us what Obama and Hillary drank at Dianne Feinstein's house...you'll just have to listen to find out what!
She points out that the center has already formed -- alot of what was seen as "left" (get out of Iraq, we need health care policy) is now a consensus for most Americans.

Matt says the audacity of Obama is the packaging and selling of liberal goals as common sense.

And Bob worries that political sharks around Obama will push him further to the right. He says he believes in free trade, in a globalized world, it is a fact of life, but that it should be tempered with worker, environmental, child labor protections.. Free trade should promote a new world order, not a new US military order.

You'll hear much more when you listen to this week's show.
You can't blame them. Clinton won nine of the final fifteen primaries, and fell short of the nomination by a fairly narrow margin. Depending on how you count the votes, she may have even garnered MORE of the popular vote than Barack Obama, and these things place Obama in a tricky situation.

Part of the Obama 'magic' with voters was his competition with Hillary Clinton, and now that competition is gone. He sits on top of the Democratic celebration, but only half of the party has shown up so far. Clinton's supporters are looking for somewhere to hang their voting hat, and many are threatening to withhold their vote from Obama unless he tosses them a bone.

In one way, you could call it a cheap threat based on anger and disappointment. In another way, you could call it justifiable frustration with such a tight race. Yesterday, all the pressure was on Hillary Clinton. Today, it's on Barack Obama to bring ALL Democratic voters into the fold. No easy job for him.

The obvious choice for Obama is to consider bringing Clinton along on the ticket. But there have been detractors to this idea, especially from people who see Bill Clinton as a potential problem in the final campaign.

However, Bill Clinton has stated publicly that he wants to return to New York and go back to work at his foundation. This is probably a good idea.

It's the irresistible force versus the immovable object. Can Obama win over Clinton's supporters without putting her on the ticket as Vice-President? Perhaps, but when the convention comes, Clinton cannot help being a serious force in Denver. So far, she has avoided anything that even resembles putting pressure on Barack Obama regarding the VP nod.

She doesn't have to. Her supporters are already making their feelings known, and as the weeks go by, they will probably become even more vocal.

It's impossible - and unfair - to compare this situation with anything else previously in American politics. There have been close races before, but not between two candidates who were riding the same campaign bus in slightly different seats. 'Too close to call' is a good metaphor here, and the Republicans await any sign of weakness eagerly, like a pack of wolves looking for a good opening.

The Republicans would like nothing better than a divided Democratic party, since this is probably the only way they can win in November. If the Democrats are united, it's almost a certainty Obama will be calling 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue home in January.

The entire election could easily hinge on what Obama does next. Unlike some previous Presidential elections where selecting your running mate was not necessarily a key issue, this year is different. This year it could mean the difference between victory or defeat.

If you are a Hillary Clinton supporter and you REALLY think Clinton would be the best choice as Obama's running mate - then you should make your feelings known. The Obama camp is going to be watching the polls closely on this over the next few weeks, and they are probably wondering what will happen at the convention. It's certain that a lot of pent-up Hillary frustration will make itself visible the first time she steps to the podium.

The most important thing here is for the Democrats - and Obama - to find a solution that will bring Clinton's supporters under their wing, to help assure a victory in November.

The alternative is too much to imagine, and even more depressing than a case of 'Hillary Letdown'.

Yesterday, Hillary Clinton endorsed Barack Obama. The speech she delivered was nothing short of amazing.

Now, I am obviously a supporter of Senator Obama, and have been
throughout the primary season. I will admit, that over the last six
months I've sometimes criticized the words and tactics of the Clinton
campaign. I reacted rashly to comments Senator Clinton made,
because of that I called for her to withdraw from the race. In
retrospect, I can see that I missed the point, and I believe that point
was highlighted by Senator Clinton's endorsement speech.

She toughed it out until the end, and never stopped fighting, and I now
believe that was the right decision. Tuesday night, when she spoke, I
wasn't expecting her to concede (mostly because her campaign stated
that she wasn't going to that night) and because of that, I was not
upset that she didn't immediately step down after Senator Obama
clinched the nomination. Even when the traditional media was
criticizing that move by her campaign, I was beginning to understand.

I have often been asked, why, as a woman, I was voting for Senator
Obama. I will admit that the first twenty dollars I donated to this
election went to Senator Clinton. I will also admit that the thought
that she might have become the first female president was an exciting
idea for me. In the end though, I chose to vote and campaign for
Senator Obama, because I felt he was the best candidate, and I didn't
believe I should base my vote entirely on gender.

However, Senator Clinton has broken barriers for women everywhere. She
has given any woman, especially young women, the ability to believe
that they can achieve anything. One day there will be a female
president of the United States, and it will be rooted in the campaign
Senator Clinton ran this year.

In not giving up until the end, she will have encouraged many other
people to not give up on dreams that may have previously seemed insurmountable. And when Senator Obama had enough delegates to
secure the nomination, she stood by her word and endorsed him. And I
believe she will continue to work hard to help him win in November.

I doubt there was anything easy about the speech she gave yesterday. I
imagine even thanking her supporters was difficult because they had
invested so much time, energy, hope and resources into her campaign,
and the gratitude she displayed had to have been bittersweet.

But then there was a much more difficult task. She had to ask the
eighteen million people who voted for her to now stand with her and
support Senator Obama as the nominee, a role both her and eighteen
million people had wanted her to fill. She did so eloquently,
gracefully, and with as much force behind her words as Senator Obama or
any of his supporters could ask for. She made it clear that it was her
desire for the Democratic party to emerge victorious in November.

This speech needed time to be written. Senator Clinton waited to deliver it, yet she announced Wednesday that the speech would be happening. This is important. First, she quickly indicated that she would be suspending her campaign, so that the Democratic party was not left waiting. Yet by giving herself a few days before delivery she allowed herself time to process the end of her campaign, and so her words were spoken with a much clearer mindset than if she had done so Tuesday night, or Wednesday.

Now, clearly it will take more than five days for Senator Clinton's eighteen million supporters to fully cope with this transition. I suspect it might take the senator herself a while, but publicly she has done what she needed to do, in order to take the first steps of reuniting the Democratic party.

For this, I am grateful, and I hope all of Senator Obama's supporters are as well. Senator Obama released a statement expressing his own gratitude.

To all of Senator Obama's supporters, my plea to you is this: No more Clinton bashing. Throughout this campaign I have tried to keep my remarks and my thoughts civil, and speak out only against policies or campaign actions, without making my critiques on the Senator herself. I hope I have done that. But there have been a minority of outspoken Obama supporters who have not, and this needs to end. Even with the potential of Senator Clinton getting the VP spot on the ticket, it is imperative that we only move on in unity from now on. Ultimately, the VP nod will go to someone of Obama's own choosing, and he will choose the person who he thinks will best serve the country.

To all of Senator Clinton's supporters I would ask that you ignore that group of Obama supporters who would bash Senator Clinton. They do not accurately represent their candidate. And I do understand that not all of you will come rushing to sign up with the Obama campaign. My only understanding of how you must be feeling is based on the 2000 and 2004 elections. And with so much more at stake this year, I'm not sure that even that adequately describes the feeling. But for those of you who have already decided to follow Senator Clinton's lead, you have my utmost respect, and gratitude. Even those of who haven't, you still have both my respect and gratitude because I do know how it feels to invest yourself in a candidate, and each of us has been part of a historic primary season.

I now hope that the process of unifying is well on its way, and that we can take back the White House come November.

I love Hillary. I always have. When everyone hated her I held a great admiration for her. When people began to open up to her I loved her. And now that she has run for president and is now conceding and standing behind Obama in support of his campaign as president of the United States I love her. I have never been fickle about how I feel for Hillary and something in me always looked up to her and still does.

She did good for us women. She taught us so much in this race. My daughter will grow up not finding it odd at all that a woman can run for president. And hopefully in my daughter's lifetime, there will be a woman president that is deserving of the title and honor of being our president. If I don't see the day, I know my daughter will.

She conceded and stands behind Obama 100%. I do as well. Here is the article from the New York Times:

ENDING HER BID, CLINTON BACKS OBAMA

WASHINGTON — Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton brought her campaign for the White House to an end on Saturday with a rousing farewell to thousands of supporters here and an emotional and unequivocal call for her voters to get behind Senator Barack Obama, the man who defeated her for the Democratic nomination.

For 28 minutes, standing alone on a stage in the historic National Building Museum, Mrs. Clinton spoke not only about the importance of electing Mr. Obama, but also about the extent to which her campaign was a milestone for women. She urged women who had supported her — who had turned out at her headquarters, flocked to her rallies and poured into the polls to vote for her — not to take the wrong lesson from her loss.

“You can be so proud that, from now on, it will be unremarkable for a woman to win primary state victories, unremarkable to have a woman in a close race to be our nominee, unremarkable to think that a woman can be the president of the United States,” she said. “To those who are disappointed that we couldn't’t go all of the way, especially the young people who put so much into this campaign, it would break my heart if, in falling short of my goal, I in any way discouraged any of you from pursuing yours.”

At that point the cheers, mostly from women, swelled so loud that Mrs. Clinton’s remaining words could not be heard

Mrs. Clinton first mentioned Mr. Obama seven minutes into her speech. But when she did, she swept away any doubt — created by her speech on Tuesday night, when he claimed the nomination — that she was ready to concede or that she had any hesitancy about endorsing him or his qualifications to be president.

“The way to continue our fight now, to accomplish the goals for which we stand, is to take our energy, our passion, our strength and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama the next president of the United States,” Mrs. Clinton said, her voice echoing across the stone walls of the building where she and President Bill Clinton danced at Inaugural Balls in 1993 and 1997. “Today, as I suspend my campaign, I congratulate him on the victory he has won and the extraordinary race he has run. I endorse him and throw my full support behind him.”

It was a dramatic — and at times theatrical — end to a candidacy that transfixed the country. Many of her supporters watched, some weeping, turning out to witness and appreciate the history of this latest turn in the Clintons’ story. If it was a clearly personal moment for Mrs. Clinton, it was a political one as well, as she attempted to marshal her large following on Mr. Obama’s behalf.

“I ask all of you to join me in working as hard for Barack Obama as you have for me,“ Mrs. Clinton said. “I have served in the Senate with him for four years. I have been in this campaign with him for 16 months. I have stood on the stage and gone toe-to-toe with him in 22 debates. I’ve had a front-row seat to his candidacy, and I have seen his strength and determination, his grace and his grit.”

“I want to take all our energy and all our strength and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama as our next president of the United States,” said Mrs. Clinton, who, as she noted in the speech, drew more than 18 million votes that she can now steer toward Mr. Obama.

Most in the crowd roared their approval when Mrs. Clinton mentioned Mr. Obama’s name, though there were boos and jeers from the third-level balcony that hung over the hall. Some of Mrs. Clinton’s supporters tried to drown out those boos by clapping louder.

Throughout the campaign, Mrs. Clinton steered away from presenting her candidacy in historic terms or in the context of feminism. But not on Saturday. The theme was emphasized almost from the start of the speech to the gripping parting tableau, when she raised the hands of her daughter, Chelsea, and her mother, Dorothy Rodham.

“Now, think how much progress we’ve already made,” she said. “When we first started, people everywhere asked the same questions. Could a woman really serve as commander in chief? Well, I think we answered that one. Could an African-American really be our president? And Senator Obama has answered that one.”

Mrs. Clinton was as relaxed and expansive as she has been at any point on the campaign trail. In talking about all the reasons she thought Democrats should rally around Mr. Obama, she lapsed into a rushed preacher’s cadence, ending each refrain with “and that’s why we need to elect Barack Obama our president.

She even embraced without any hesitation, Mr. Obama’s campaign theme, grinning broadly as she said, “So today I am standing with Senator Obama to say: ‘Yes, we can!"

Yet the most intense and passionate moments of the speech came when Mrs. Clinton was talking about breaking barriers and the historic role that both she and Mr. Obama have played in an election that was a competition between an African-American and a woman and that is almost certain to end in August with the nomination of the first African-American by a major party for the White House.

“Together, Senator Obama and I achieved milestones essential to our progress as a nation, part of our perpetual duty to form a more perfect union,” she said. “Now, on a personal note, when I was asked what it means to be a woman running for president, I always gave the same answer, that I was proud to be running as a woman, but I was running because I thought I’d be the best president. But I am a woman and, like millions of women, I know there are still barriers and biases out there, often unconscious, and I want to build an America that respects and embraces the potential of every last one of us.”

Mr. Obama, who watched the speech over the Internet while relaxing and spending time with his family in Chicago, paid particular tribute to that message in a statement thanking her for her support.

“I honor her today for the valiant and historic campaign she has run,“ he said. “She shattered barriers on behalf of my daughters and women everywhere, who now know that there are no limits to their dreams.”

There were never discussions about Mr. Obama attending the event in Washington, Obama aides said, because they did not want to detract from Mrs. Clinton’s day.

And the day did belong to her alone. She took the stage without an introduction, and neither her husband nor her daughter spoke. Instead, they remained at the side of the stage, smiling and joining in the applause, though Mrs. Clinton, in bringing her speech to a close, paid a particularly strong tribute to her husband, whose reputation was hardly enhanced by this campaign.

Before she arrived — about 45 minutes late — and after her speech ended and she slowly worked her way through the room, the sound system played Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family,” a title that may perhaps capture a bit of wishful thinking in Democratic circles these days.

The event was in many ways a traditional end to a campaign that never had a traditional beginning: Mrs. Clinton announced her candidacy in January 2007 by posting an announcement on the Internet.

The speech was written by Mrs. Clinton working with one of her speech-writers, Sarah Hurwitz, over the past few days, with help from Mr. Clinton, among others.

As the temperature climbed to the 90s, people were lined up outside the museum hours before Mrs. Clinton was to speak.

By noon, when the event was scheduled to start, thousands of people filled the stately hall, peering over the rails of the balconies surrounding the room.

The crowd, which was also made up of staff members and friends of the Clinton family, was overwhelmingly white, largely female and dotted with children, many on their parents’ shoulders.

Sarah Denault, 16, said she awoke at 3:25 a.m. for the ride from her home in Howell, N.J. “I just wanted to say ‘Thank you, Hillary,’” said Ms. Denault, whose T-shirt said just that. “I figure we’re living history, to borrow a phrase from Hillary.”

A few feet from where Mrs. Clinton spoke, Seth Goldstein stood with his 12-year-old daughter, Chloe. After volunteering for Mrs. Clinton in seven states, Mr. Goldstein said he wanted his daughter to see what he called a graceful departure.

“She is leaving on her own terms,” said Mr. Goldstein, 46. “She had a tremendous campaign. I’m sad she’s leaving, but I think she’d make an excellent vice president.”

Friends and associates said they fully expected Mrs. Clinton to throw herself into campaigning for Mr. Obama, though she will also work strenuously to thank her own supporters, donors and staff members.

In the near term, associates say, Mrs. Clinton will return to the Senate and immerse herself in signature issues like health care. She will resist the inevitable questions about whether she’ll run again for president — which, given who she is, will continue to be a subtext for how many people view her every move.
