I can think of a lot of people who would call me an idiot for wasting 48 hours of my life trying to win a $50 dollar Amazon gift card on a website that I know nothing about by playing a game that is so soulsuckingly dumb and buggy that it slowly eats away at your sanity until suddenly you are staying up all night and forgetting how to split separate thoughts into separate sentences. Even factoring in breaks, that's still barely over a buck an hour! But hey, what else was I going to do with that 48 hours? And it's fifty bucks I didn't have before! And now that my sleeping schedule is more or less back to normal, I can say that it was all worth it.

In other news, I just got this ridiculous vintage bathing cap. It's funny. I've long been a collector of ridiculous headgear, but I've never had a bathing cap before! I've got a baby blue construction helmet and a yarmulke with gold threading and quite a few faux-fur hats, but no bathing caps! And this bathing cap is a doozy. I want to wear it everywhere just to show it off, even though it happens to cut off bloodflow to my brain and makes me look like a spectacular Conehead.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Hats?

If you are like me, as winter approaches you begin to really open up to dressing well. I'm a big fan of winter because of all the classy accesories; scarfs, sweaters, pullovers, sweater vests, odd waistcoats, and finally hats. I currently have none and have been searching for the right one to start a collection of 5 hats to get me through the year. Until then, I'll settle for admiring The Houndstooth Kid's massive collection.

yesterday i was cruising around southeast Portland on my bike with a cutie - stopped at a corner, looked up at a telephone pole and, in all seriousness i thought i heard angels singing - there, on the pole was a hot pink sign that said "YARN FOR SALE."

i was only six blocks away. "I'm sorry," I told said cutie. "I have to go see."

had i more than ten dollars in cash on me i would have walked away with some beautiful hand-dyed cotton and boucle (would have made gorgeous scarves) but as it stood, i had to put it all back and stick with the most-currently-useful score - SEVEN skeins of Katia Baltika in a dusty, forest green - for TEN BUCKS. i'll be making some great hats with this wool blend (which, incidentally, is made in Barcelona, Spain - i've been himming and hawing about whether it's really financially feasible to go, but i keep getting these little "signs", hehehe)...

in the meantime, i've started this incredibly easy hat pattern with the aforementioned pink Cascade 128 and its corresponding mohair, held together. Hope it works out! given the size of the needles (11) and the chunky yarn i've already blazed through half of it.

This is a very simple pattern, but with it i will FINALLY get around to learning the kitchener stitch (I also have a great book to help out - I highly suggest that young knitters add this one to their bags!) Historically (in the two years i've been knitting here and there) i've been a terrible seamer. And I am sure it's not going to be the easiest thing to accomplish with mohair, but we'll see what happens. Maybe the fuzziness will hide the ickiness of a beginner attempting a new skill.

Also - you know that bittersweet feeling you get when you have what you think is a potential creative vision, and then you discover someone else is already doing it, and doing it incredibly well? I just had that. Pixiebell's elfinwear is right up my alley - her hats are fantastic, and oh, yes, she shares some patterns (if you're on Ravelry, find her profile as "earthlyfae" - yes, you can see how this could happen, I guess, huh?).

Here's another little knitting discovery, posted to Craft magazine's Twitter this morning was THIS lovely little pattern from Slip Slip Knit. I've added these great little slippers to my ravelry queue, as I think they'll make some great winter gifts.

Yes, I am going through another yarn and knitting phase. This means a few things - I have PMS, I'm procrastinating (packing for March Fourth tour to Colorado and New Mexico, as well as packing my house to move out and hit the road again for the winter). It's sunny out, too - I feel like perhaps I should go somewhere outside but maybe i'll just knit on the porch instead.

And btw - as regards my OWN Etsy shop - it will be going on a bit of hiatus for a bit at the end of the month. I am headed to the wilds of northern California for a couple of months, and then I'm unsure where after that - New Mexico, perhaps, and maybe even Spain.

As Katia yarns are made in Barcelona and I've discovered the town is also host to several bead shops, I may or may not be able to maintain a public and saleable crafty existence this winter, but I'm not sure just yet. I'll be packing my readymade pieces for potential sale, but all the custom and made-to-order items will become inactive for a while. So - if you've been thinking about some silver feather earrings or a custom braille pendant, your time is running very short!

this might be the fastest one yet...

Argh, vox ate my post, but anyway...

This really might be the fastest i've ever knit anything. I wrapped this up in two days - it's simple, sure, but even the simplest things, as we've seen, can take me months.

As is typical with everything I knit, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, though it's now blocking in an effort to get my crappy brim ribbing to even out a bit.

Incidentally, I did something this morning - while waiting to go have coffee with a friend of mine, I stopped in a local yarn shop he happens to live just a few blocks from.

The Naked Sheep keeps it simple - they have a small and select collection of yarn, all of it reasonably priced. It's a yarn shop for the common knitter, really - friendly and affordable, absolutely lacking in snobbery. Truly, everything in there is a good value for the price. I probably shouldn't have, but... I got a wild hankerin' to knit another hat. I've had this fuschia pink skein of mohair in my stash drawer for several months now. I took a wild stab and hoped for the best, arriving home with two skeins of Cascade 128 (a chunkier version of "the most popular yarn on Ravelry," Cascade 220).

As you can see - I was um, completely spot on with my choice and at $6.50 a skein, not feeling horribly guilty about it. I am happy knitting hats, as I can, apparently, finish them - and I'm going to need knitting projects and ways to kill time on a tour bus for a couple of weeks. So, now, off to find a pattern.

Dexter and the new hat...

I started this last night along with season 2 of Dexter. Now that I'm caught up on Weeds, i need something to give me some solidity - several hours in a row of knitting and tv-watching pleasure.

It's no wonder that sadly, so many knitters that I encounter are overweight. It's an addictive life - considering, for me, that I seem to only knit once it gets cold out, I could easily see a weight gain coming with this habit. I DID gain a few pounds last winter with this (catching up on Weeds).

Last night I watched four episodes of Dexter and started this hat. It was the second time I'd started it. The yarn, by the way, is NOT blue - my expensive point and shoot digital has issues. It is soooo soft, too - a wool/silk/alpaca blend called Silky Flammé by Elsebeth Lavold. I've had it since last winter and have done nothing but fondle it until now.

I cast it on the first time on double-pointed needles, thinking I was all cool at the coffee shop. I was trying to be economical and not go out and buy a circular needle in a size I already had in DPNs, but... it took me long enough to get the whole thing cast onto DPNs, i knit five rows, and discovered a flaw i couldn't fix on my own. If I frogged I'd just have to unravel the whole mess and start over, and casting onto DPNs is never fun.

I was headed to a NIA class and there's a lovely yarn shop near my class called Knit/Purl, so I stopped in to see if they could help me. They are wonderful women - i wish I could afford to shop there but of course, they cater to a downtown crowd (a massive stack of Tilli Thomas and Habu, and a rack of cashmere I fondle every time). Their saving grace, for me, is the niceness of the staff and their willingness to help a girl out (they also have a huge selection of Shibui which I will one day buy a few skeins of). One woman sat down with me and after looking at it, suggested I frog it and switch to a circular. Instead of a twenty dollar skein of yarn (it's how I am, i wanted to make sure I didn't just walk into a yarn shop with yarn I didn't buy there simply to make use of their knowledge) I just went ahead and invested in the circular. I couldn't wait to get home from NIA to cast on - and lo and behold it took me mere minutes to cast on and start rolling again. I know this is a shared sentiment among many knitters but there's something in me that won't let go of feeling a bit like a loser for just wanting to go home and knit. I live in Portland, Oregon, which has extensive social opportunities. Maybe it's saying something that I hardly care anymore. Maybe I've already left in my head. Maybe, god forbid, I'm getting old. Or maybe it's just a usual cycle.

Maybe, too, I'll have to line up another knitting project, as in eight days I'm leaving for a couple of weeks to go on tour with March Fourth Marching band - there will be a lot of time on a bus. I'll be doing merch on their southwest tour, and i'm terribly thrilled about this. Some of my oldest friends in Portland are in this band and it coincides with my 35th birthday. And, well, colorado and new mexico. 'nuff said. When I get back I have 8 days to pack up my room and get it stored, and then it's off to California for a couple of months. After that, who knows. I'm considering not going to Spain afterall - Mt. Shasta and Taos are looking like more viable options for actually doing something this winter, not going broke, and not returning to the states destitute and with the need to live in my mother's basement again, especially at my age, and especially in Greensboro, North Carolina (a more culturally devoid place there never was).

As for hats and circular needles, and attempting to be cheap about the tools, now I know, and now I won't balk so much. it does save time. I used to crochet the heck out of hats, and i still harbor a small fantasy of finally getting a grasp on how knitted garments actually work up and making a line of hats (knitting goes by rows of fabric, crochet is stitch-by-stitch, which in my mind makes it WAY easier to shape something). That's a fantasy, in the meantime I continue to knit simple patterns like the Floopy Hat, which lead me in that direction.

I know, I know, everyone really and truly cares about my knitting. I'm thoroughly amazed that there are so many blogs prattling on about this stuff.

so it's been a while internettes but i'm back. and better than ever. first of I got a new job! hooray for tech support! second off I'm mostly abstaining from using drugs (I might smoke weed once every week and a half if that), third off I met a nice girl who seems to enjoy spending some of her time with me. my phone is turned off right now otherwise I'd probably have a couple pictures of us being awesome together. In other news me and Brian have started a new band with our friends Mike and Erik, it's called Meat Extender and for the most part we are pretty stoked to be writing new material and we hope to play a show sometime around the end of september. aside from that i've just been working my ass off. 120 hours in the last two weeks. hella overtime. haha almost a whole nother weeks worth of work. but what evs i gots bills to pay. and stuff to get out of hock. oh and head over to We Heart Music to check out my review of The Dan Sheehan Conspiracy's new album.

Time to move to another lingering place

so I'm signing off from Spain, and will reconnect somewhere in Kenya, God willing, or when I return to the States. I'm not sure I can go a full month without bloging! After a summer with almost no rain, Galician weather caught up to me, and I got a little damp on the feast day. Yet, just before 11:30pm last night, right when the fireworks were set to start, the wind pushed the rain away, and we had a star-filled night punctuated with the extravangaza of lazers, fireworks, music, and fiesta.

I did buy one "recuerdo" from this excursion. I've been wanting a Basque hat to wear, because they are solid black (always appropriate), and very similar in style to my personal favorite, the "golf" cap, in teh Scottish and Irish tradition. I wasn't going to, but I passed a hat shop, and they had one with the cathedral imprinted on the silk inside, so I decided this would make a good alternative to the mortar board if I finally get done with this DMin., so it's something I carry with me from this project to the celebration that emerges from completion of my research and reflection.

Now, a VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to the Evangelical Education Society. Not only did they enable my work in Spain this summer through one of the educational grants, but I also received an award through the previous grant cycle to go to Kenya. Having postponed that trip from last January, it's now time to follow up and follow through on that grant.

I am very excited, a little nervous, and very hopeful.

Of course, I will continue (if not in Kenya, then certinaly in the many months following my return) to reflect on and grow from this experience in Spain, as I will I am sure of my time in Kenya. Thanks to all who have kept with me in reading this far, for your comments and prayers. I hope you will enjoy what may come in the future!

On the fourth of July, a friend of mine from college (there aren't that many other kinds) threw a barbecue and I went because I wanted to get drunk and eat food, and those were the offering for this particular dig. I recently went clothes shopping (fashion shopping, as I call it) with my Neverending War, Novelty Stimulus Check from the IRS, which I very much appreciated. I'm recently back from a bad case of the funemployments, so any money is good money (as if this were never the case). Anyway, I was all excited for my outfit of Levi's skinny jeans, Quicksilver straw hat, and random t-shirt, which would capture the beer-goggled hearts of the Independence Day masses.

Like Dale Ernhardt in girls' jeans.

So whatever, I got wasted, because that's what I do. This one kid, as I first walked in, had already outdone me, clothes-wise, rocking a cutoff Jack Daniels shirt and short jean shorts. Try maintaining eye-contact when shaking the hand of someone wearing something like this. It's hard.

"Need a beer-pong partner, bro?"

I managed to not hurt anyone's feelings, which I am wont to do when drunk, but in a polite way. I might say, "Wow, you're not as big of a bitch as I used to think you were." Or, "You still talk to your girlfriend who dumped you for that Parisian sales consultant four years ago?" I don't do it on purpose, but when I drink, I want to say stuff, and, though it makes people laugh sometimes, I often end up with an apology on my hands the next day. Anyway, I don't often celebrate holidays, and now that I've celebrated this one, I realize it doesn't really matter what you're doing. You know people in your demographic are likely getting tossed (whatever that means for them) so you just don't want to feel left out by sitting at home and watching the Harry Potter marathon on ABC Family and fashioning nooses out of old Nine Inch Nails t-shirts.

"I know you asked for a noose, but I just couldn't help myself."

I was also involved in a fire cracker melee, and made it out unscathed, though I do have phantom pains in both my forehead and my abdomen. These pains will go away before i remember where they came from. Anyway, cheers, and, like, go America!

DGW Episode 600

The Third Hand

Dick's Gadget Warehouse

Made by Fred Lane Enterprises, the Third Hand was a food tray complete with elastic bands to hold a bottle and a glass, with a rubberised strap that hangs over your neck like the old cigarette girl's cigarette tray, in camouflage/army fatigue style. It also tilted inward a bit. Neither Dick nor Leo could quite work out its raison d'etre. Prompted by the Chatroom, Leo used the Third Hand to hold his laptop (which broke up the live video connection).

Dick thinks he may have got it from a Gourmet Show or National Hardware Show, but there is no evidence of it on the web any more. The closest he can find is another tray called the Third Hand Snack Tray, for holding your drink and snacks.

No Video Download Yet for Episode 600
Leo did mention at one stage during GizWizLive on 27 June that he would make Episode 600 available as a video download. So far only the audio is available. Perhaps it won't be released as a video after all.
