Life has been going smoothly, which makes for some pretty boring blog updates. (or a lack thereof) My first week of classes is over, and I'm really enjoying everything so far. My German class has an intensive amount of study work, but I'm okay with that. We're reading Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Johnathan Safran Foer for my Narrative class and I have to make myself stop reading it so I don't get too far ahead. If you're into postmodernism and stream of consciousness writing, seriously, look into it! Safran Foer also wrote one of my favorite books ever, Everything Is Illuminated which has a really fun movie made from it starring my hero of all time, Eugene Hutz. Anyway, things are just really fun around here. What a boring statement!

It's also nice being able to walk to really anywhere I want to go.. or, ride my bike. Thankfully it's stopped raining for a while so I can continue my routine of riding around in the early mornings when not many people are out and walking. I think getting a bike from my dead great uncle is one of the best things that has ever happened to my emotional state!

Today, I'm getting the back of my hair chopped off and snuggling Chuck a lot. We'll probably get into an adventure. I love all you guys and miss you terribly. Though, Jorge, your sister is a pretty cute replacement!

"Holding onto anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you're the one who gets burned." ~Buddha

Took this at Get Loaded in the Park yesterday. It's been a while since Mosh and I went to a music festival. The desire to spend hours getting to and from a glorified field, queue for chemical toilets and listen (coz you rarely get to see anything when you are my height) to bands you love for half an hour sounding shit because it's too windy for the sound system has strangely worn off.
But this was Clapham Common a mere 20 mins walk/bolt home and there were some good bands playing so we thought we'd give it a go.
There were times I loved it (down at the front jumping up and down to the fab as ever Gogol Bordello) but there were also times when I hated it.
The queues, the shit food, the warm drink, the scrum for the loos, the way you didn't stand a chance of enjoying the music unless you were somewhere near the stage but as the day wore on, down the front attracted more and more pissed up twats who's idea of a good time was to push each other around and jump on each other so that you were half watching the band and half watching to see if an elbow was coming towards your head.
And no one told me you had to go in fancy dress, I haven't seen such efforts since the Oakham Guide and Scout Carnival 1982. It's a shame my camera battery died.
Still I was brought back to Clapham with a bump when someone threw a tartan picnic blanket on the stage during Supergrass.
And it was only a 20 minute walk home.

It's hard to believe that it's already August, and odd that I'm attending my second Lollapalooza since moving here. Crazy!

Yesterday, after an oddly productive morning at work, I left the office to meet Jess for lunch then headed to meet our friend Josie. She's in town to join in with the shenanigans.

When we dropped her stuff off and endured the slow buses down to the festival grounds, we had missed the first few songs by Gogol Bordello, the band she wanted to see. Their music wasn't really my thing, but their gypsy punk was at least entertaining to watch.

We started to watch Mates Of State, but live they're very difficult to endure - the already ear-damaging vocals do more damage when they're out of key - so we went to wait for Jess by the merchandise stand, hearing little snippets of what I think was Grizzly Bear, judging by the schedule.

With Jess now a part of the gang, we went on down to see Bloc Party. Last year, we bought tickets to see them but didn't think we knew them well enough to justify going. They're really great live, so naturally I regret that decision. They didn't play their best song, 'Little Thoughts', but they busted out 'Helicopter' and 'Like Eating Glass', so I was happy.

Like Eating Glass

After hemming and hawing about whether to stay in place for Radiohead (who were over an hour away), we decided instead to go get food. This had the added bonus of putting us in line with the stage CSS were playing on. I feel bad that I didn't give them my full intention, they sounded tight live, and were obviously far more entertaining than the annoying-sounding Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks they were competing against.

Rat Is Dead (Rage)

We witnessed the huge flood of people towards the stage for Radiohead (wisely, the organisers didn't pit anyone against them, as playing to no one would be depressing). From our distance, it was initially a little hard to get into the band, but it meant we could hear them perfectly, and we still saw their interesting new light show.

There are awesome guitar lines on the verse with the line "The planet is a gunboat on a sea of fear", but the build-up to them didn't work.
- We were too far to see Thom's crazy dancing, boo.
- NOTHING from Pablo Honey? Boo!

I think 'Weird Fishes/Arpeggi' is a strong contender for my favourite song of all time.

ARE YOU READY?!??! HIVES! HIT IT!!!

aaaaaaa! shuddup!

Suecos duma figa!

Right....

Reaccionário, no mínimo. Soltou-me um sorriso, devido à memória.

(ler o título in modo "frankenstainiano")

Sempre a andar.

They got me at "of moons, birds and monsters".... :) <3 <3 <3

{em analogia ao momento de repasto durante o festival, vou agora almoçar, interromper por isso este post, e volto mais tarde para falar do resto}
