Dexter Game Coming to iPhone (Murder Sim?)

Is GTA 4 a murder simulator? Probably not, but any game based on Showtime's Dexter damn well better be. According to a tweet by TV squad, a Dexter game is on its way to the iPhone and will be detailed later tonight at the Dexter Comic-con panel. Will we be able to use the iPhone's accelerometer to bludgeon victims? Or cut up body parts by drawing them (with multiple fingertips) on the screen? Only time will tell—because Dexter himself surely won't. [TVSquad]

Risk

Risk is intense. I once held the continents of Africa and South America, but now I hold 3 territories in South America with very few armies on it. It is sad.

Matt is fortifying inside of Asia and Australia, Chris is sitting back while Chasen does all the work attacking me in South America. It is over 70 armies (Chasen's) against my 22 armies, yet I will prevail.

Down to two countries now... I will prevail!

It's freaking 5:15 A.M... I'm tired.

When Nintendo isn't busy heating their offices with a money furnaces just to wipe the sweat off their brow with money, sometimes Nintendo president Satoru Iwata takes a moment to step down from his sweaty throne to lay the smackdown (generally through a stinky sock filled with golden pirate coins) on competing consumer electronics. This time, he responded to those thinking that the iPhone might be the new DS:

I use the iPhone myself. I know that it's an attractive product, but when I look carefully at the iPhone's users vs. the users of our Nintendo DS, I understand there are some overlaps. And if you ask 'Is the overlap too big?,' my answer is no, not so much.

Iwata's argument may be true, but the real reason that Apple can't touch the DS market is that Nintendo has sold like a bajillion of the things already. Oh yeah, and the iPhone still has some control issues... [Forbes via DSFanboy]

What exactly is “casual” gaming?

In the last 2 days i've been following by News and Blogs the Casual Connect Conference in Seatle, and what can i say? Very good and controversial Key Speakers are making the news on the Web e Mobile gaming world.

The main issue yesterday was: What exactly is “casual” gaming?

My impression was that it’s a term to describe short video games that are usually played online or mobile with a minimum of software downloads and time commitment—things like solitaire and various brainteaser games. As opposed to “core” gaming, which spans the role-playing, virtual-world, and shoot-em-up market segments, traditionally played on consoles. Although both have huge markets, the conventional wisdom was that the two types of games don’t overlap much in terms of their players.

But times are changing, said Paul Thelen, founder and chief strategy officer of Seattle-based Big Fish Games, in a keynote talk yesterday morning at Seattle. Thelen presented survey results that showed, for instance, that heavy-action core gamers (typically boys and young men) are also likely to play casual games that involve puzzles, trivia, and hidden-object searches (usually thought of as the older female demographic). “Continuing to categorize a gamer as only a core or casual player is limiting,” he said.

That point was driven by the next keynote by Trip Hawkins, founder and CEO of Digital Chocolate (and founder of gaming giant Electronic Arts). Hawkins spoke about the massive potential for games to reach not just core or casual gamers, but also everyone else—what he calls “omni” gamers. That includes people who don’t own consoles or play games online, but who might play Guitar Hero or Wii Sports at a friend’s house.

Hawkins also said that right now each segment of the market might have 50 to 100 million gamers worldwide. “But we need to address a new market segment, the next billion gamers…the ones who don’t think of themselves as gamers.” And to do that, he added, games need to work in Web browsers instead of requiring downloads, and they need to work across the full spectrum of computing devices. “You’ve got to make a more agile form of software that will work on different platforms.”

As a step towards that vision, Hawkins mentioned that Digital Chocolate, which he called “the Pixar of mobile games,” has sold some 40 million downloads for mobile phones, for $5 to $10 each, and is making inroads on social-networking sites like Facebook.

It’s definitely a new world out there. Distinctions between casual and core gaming seem to matter less and less, while the ability to push games onto phones and social websites is becoming increasingly crucial to business. And, perhaps, to society as a whole. Hawkins argues strongly for the mental-health benefits of games and the increased

social interactions that are spurred by playing them. “Conventional media is dead as a growth story,” he says. “People are looking to social media to have new ways to check in.”
