I hope emily sears doesn't mind if I introduce a new tool.  Those of you using GIMP already have a fractal generator (Fractal Explorer) in the "Filters" menu, but here is a Java-based fractal generator: Wacker Art Fractal Generator

Here's an example of a 3-2 Difference fractal:

Now, taking this result, and using GIMP to mosaically set more fractals of various types within the picture, I get this:
