Saturday in the country

Another tiger lilly. That seems to be the only thing interesting that I can take pictures of these days. And somehow, I'm not sure they are as good as they could be. Anyone have any ideas on how to take better pictures of tiger lillies?

Our parish picnic was today. I made a couple of chocolate chip cookie pies (new recipe!) this morning, then worked from noon til 3:00. It wasn't as bad as I was afraid it would be. I'm not used to being outside in the heat anymore. It was nice to get together with people that I don't get to see that often.

I've been trying for three days to get some more photographs uploaded to iStockphoto, but nothing happens. Don't know if it is my computer, or something else. My slow connection doesn't help matters. I was able to upload over 100 pictures to Snapfish last night.

I've started working on a lap quilt made from homespun fabrics. I was able to buy several new pieces on Friday at Wal-Mart. Hope our local store doesn't close their fabric department!

More country photography

Tiger Lilly

My tiger lillies started blooming today and I thought it would be easy to get a great photograph. Wrong! I took several this morning, and none of them turned out very good. I took a dozen or so tonight and got a couple to pretty good ones. It is going to take some more trial and error to figure out the best angle and time of day.

I thought the petals on the tiger lillies just had dark colored spots, but when you look close, you can see that the spots in close to the center are actually small projections. I'll have to try to get a better picture tomorrow. It was still a little bit early when I went out tonight. I walked down to the lake to get another water picture, but the lake was still choppy. Sometimes it looks like glass, but not tonight.

Rowland Pond Center Minnetonka MN

The sun was setting and as I was heading back to my apartment from Bryant Lake Park, the smallest but most captivating park I've ever seen caught my brown eyes. The park was well kept with flowers along a trail and a large fountain in the middle of the pond. This park wasn't big at all. It was just a pond, a little grass area with sitting spots, and then some well kept gardening. I decided to turn into a driveway and park.

I glanced over to the other side of this pathway and found a pond, more trees, and then... I realized that someone decided to place an ugly sculpture in the middle of it all. At first I thought it was a ginormous clock and told myself, how clever. When I found out it was just a piece of metal put into a garden, I thought it'd be interesting to think it was a time travel apparatus. Ha! Not really, right?

We saw these Sunday while we were golfing. It is hard to judge the size by the picture, but they are almost as tall as I am. They sound like space aliens when they squawk. We were all scared the first time we heard them, SS said they sound like pterodactyls. lol

The sunflowers are all courtesy of the birds. I didn't have to plant any seeds this year! But I did anyway. Since these are blooming so early, I wanted to make sure they'd grow well into the fall.

They take up so much room in my garden, and are so tall, well, I've been neglecting my kitchen garden, afraid of the creepy crawlies that might be back there. The front of it looks good though.

Growing

It's incredible to see how my little garden grows and changes overnight. Last night I was inspecting my geranium plant, wondering when it would finally bloom. My grandmother grows the most beautiful geraniums I have ever seen. They are always gorgeous and full in an array of colors - white, red, pink. My mom isn't so lucky, hers are usually sad, so when I bought my geranium plant, I called her up for some friendly plant-growing competition. (Although I must add, she can do everything else, so I am still the true loser here.)

At first, I had no idea that geraniums needed so little water, so unfortunately some of the leaves are burned. Now that the water is drying out, the flowers are budding, and last night one of them opened! It was a nice surprise to see. Hopefully they continue to grow and bloom through the end of summer.

My other plants are growing as well, and I am excited to see them popping up all over my window boxes that serve as a makeshift garden on our tiny porch. The weird thing is that the seeds I planted last year, the ones I gave up on and never bothered to tend to, started sprouting this year because I used some of the same dirt since it was in fine condition. I don't quite remember what I planted, with the exception of morning glories and maybe some tulips. I am pretty convinced that the mystery plant I found growing in nothing but water is a morning glory, because it is growing to be tall. Morning glories can grow in the worst conditions and are climbing plants, so I think it is a safe assumption.

In this photo, you can see the geranium, my green pepper plant, and the banana pepper plant. I think the pepper plants need some kind of stake, because they are starting to tilt sideways. Notice the adorable Wembley paws in the left-hand corner.

Peppermint

This box contains a peppermint plant and some of the mystery flowers from last summer. Peppermint grows like crazy, and I am hoping to have enough of it so I can make dried peppermint sachets for the holidays. Peppermint smells so good.

Veggies

These are the boxes of new seeds that I planted this year. I planted arugula, pickling cucumbers, jalapeno, and cilantro. They are sprouting, but I am just hoping I can keep them alive. Especially the arugula, because it would be fabulous to be able to make salad from my own plants!

Mystery Plant

And here is the mystery plant. The "Hawaiian" plant. I have no idea what it is, only that is going to be huge. I love this plant. The leaves remind me of oak leaves.

And that is my little garden....hopefully I will have even more photos soon, when it gets bigger and better!

Red Light

Despite being disappointed by the Pole$tar event, I still want one of their (or Xpolesitions') shirts - cause they were CUTE - but don't know how to get one.
Although I stand by my comments about the Pole$tar event, I feel bad that I didn't balance out with more good (like getting flirted with by some good looking men) and that someone from Pole$tar was mildly hurt by reading them. I give her props for having a neutral reaction instead of flaming me - she showed a lot of maturity. More than I would have. [see comments to the prior post, the one with my dress pictures]
My left eye is watering all the time and it "drains" upward, into the crease, totally f-ing up my makeup. What's that about?
My ears are STILL ringing from the Pole$tar event. That's 2 days. The Left one is substantially worse than right (hearing is fully back in right but still partial in Left)... which is concerning me. A LOT. I'm pretty sure it's just shock and will wear off, eventually, but will have the doc to take a quick look tomorrow.
House is a DISASTER AREA yet I still don't clean it (where the hell are my magic cleaning gremlins?)
My knee probs are largely weight based but I still don't do enough to lower my weight. Because the knee limits my ability to exercise, I am starting to consider drastic non-exercise options (though not likely to actually do them).
Weed-grass in the side yard is suddenly 3' high (where is it getting water??). Tall enough that I was nervous about walking through it, to the trash cans, cause I didn't know what might be hiding in there. Guess that means weed whacking is on this weekend's agenda. Pah!!
I really need to take my car in for $400+ tune up (120k miles) this Sat, before I forget again
I pulled up a couple more vinyl tiles in the bathroom and found black mold under them. Greeeaaaaat.
Leah cancelled on going to the strip club which means cute former-coworker Jesse will probably cancel too. Damn.
People keep calling me. Hellowww... I DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE... SEND AN EMAIL!!

My knee brace showed up over the weekend (though I didn't see the box till late Sunday). It seems to be helping some - though not as much as I hoped (because it fits my thigh but is too big on my lower leg). I think a big metal "Forest Gump" leg brace sounds ideal.
There was free salad in the lunch room today (leftover from some meeting)
I have a doc appt (tomorrow morn) for more Cymbalta and a referral to an ortho/knee specialist. Will probably also ask for refill of Xanax.
Oriental Lilies

Pretty sure I'm gonna follow Cranky's advice - save even more than 50% tuition by not "taking advantage of" the $220 S Factor pricing and just wait till fall to return to their classes (or find something else). Ideally, I'd like to swap my current Thurs & Sat classes - cause it would save a bunch of gas and time. Will have to ask about that on Thurs night.
Boo was a little cuddle-kitty this morning and barely cried at all. Very unusual for her but I really enjoyed it

More of my oriental lilies, plus my firecracker lily, are in bloom. (note: all bought before I learned that lilies are dangerous for cats. I'd pull them out but the cats have been fine with them... so far... knock on wood)
