Now for another exciting update! Maria Snyder is working on her
next book in the Study series. Here are some delicious details from
the author:

There will be another book set in the Study world. My next book
will be Storm Glass - Yelena and Leif and a few familiar characters
are all in it - it's just Opal is the main character so I thought I
would change the title a bit and do a Glass series with Opal. It's
supposed to be out in April 2009, but the publisher MAY change the
date.

Here's the cover copy:

'Rue De La Pompe' - James Earle McCracken

Rue de la Pompe: A Satiric Urban Fantasy

This book is described as a satiric urban fantasy, which is pretty accurate! It’s also very original and a whole lot of fun.

The novels starts on the 30th birthday of everyman Michael Whyte, an American living in Paris, who is not sure how he has found himself there, and is doing a job which is never fully explained (either to Michael or the reader).

Longing for a bit of excitement in his life, Michael soon learns that you should be careful what you wish for. On what he thought was going to be just another ordinary, forgettable birthday, Michael receives a tuxedo from an unknown benefactor, and an invitation to a party at his eccentric (to say the least) neighbours’ apartment.

Michael soon finds himself on a quest which takes him through a Paris which will be completely unfamiliar to anyone who has ever visited the city. His task is to find the very first French franc coin. Along his journey, he is aided by a deaf mute, an friendly epistomologist and a beautiful but enigmatic French lady. He find himself involved in ten day long feasts, pursued by a crazy concierge, meeting flatulent statues and talking sculptures, and facing danger almost wherever he turns. Michael also has a running inner monologue (voiced by several facets of his personality), which is very amusing.

If you don’t like fantasy, I would not recommend this book. But if it’s a genre that you enjoy, I would strongly recommend it. I laughed out loud on several occasions, and will definitely look out for further works by this author (this is his debut novel, but hopefully it won’t be long until he writes another).

The only thing that I found a little bit of a let down was the downbeat ending, which did not seem to resonate with the tone of the rest of the book. However, all in all this was a very very good read.

This is the 48th book I have read this year.

Eaving Stones: Chapter 4 - Part B

Beau had spent his time pacing the small area of his sister’s chambers, or just outside her door. When he wasn’t pacing he spent hours watching Tebeir, supervising his efforts and asking continuous questions. His muscles ached with tension, as he struggled hard with himself to control his own emotions. His parent’s hearts would be shattered by this news. He could imagine the worried looks on their faces as they received the message which he had sent them.

Quinn, on the other hand spent most of her time sobbing amongst the Shadows. So unsure what she should do, she made herself as useful as she could to Tebeir. Collecting ingredients, helping mix potions and caring for Bella’s basic needs. When she wasn’t doing this, she was unable to stop the tears from flowing down her creamy white cheeks.

Each passing moment was torture for the two onlookers. As Bella’s condition remained unchanged, the continued to worry and watch.

Four days after Bella first fell ill; the Shamany herself came to visit. Beau and Quinn both knew that this couldn’t be a good sign of any degree. She spent several hours alone with Bella in her chambers, and when she finally did emerge said nothing. The only acknowledgment either of them received was a sympathetic look, and a small sad smile. Then they watched her dash along the long winding corridor. Tebeir running to keep up with her.

“Perhaps they are discussing the cure,” Quinn offered trying to sound cheerful. She knew Beau was greatly affected by the state of his sister’s condition. But as there was nothing either of them could do, she thought best to at least try and stay positive. She smiled as best as she could, and Beau forced one in return. He really didn’t feel much like smiling, but he knew that she meant well.

It had now been three days since the Shamany had visited. Beau and Bella had still heard nothing, and Bella’s condition had not changed at all. She continued on living, oblivious to the world surrounding her, in a constant unconscious state. Both of them sat quietly by her side watching and waiting. Tebeir would come to visit Bella around dusk, and Beau was determined to find out what was really going on when he arrived.
