As you may know I went to Marysville on the weekend. It was very relaxing, and I can't be bothered posting about the whole thing, but I will talk about Bruno's Art and Sculprure Garden, because seriouly I think for any fantasy fan, this place was paradise. It was a beautiful garden filled with beautiful sculptures, mostly fantasy themed, life size and placed beautifuly in the garden. Many of them where hidden, there was a trolls nest (the kind of pudgy small troll) and their house was built with sticks and very small so you had to crouch down to find them. There where blossoms and lizards and fawns. There was a lady in a boat that reminded me of Galladriel, then I realised that she reminded me alot of the lady of shallot. There where men trying to talk to ravens, and frogs everywhere (real frogs, not sculptures) next time I have writers block (mostly impossible) I think I'm going up to Marysville. Here are some of the highlights.

The parody "rockumentary" This Is Spinal Tap features a scene in which a fictional rock band's manager defends a particularly idiotic decision by pointing out that he was merely following the instructions of Nigel Tufnel, the band's profoundly clueless lead guitarist.

Lead singer David St. Hubbins replies, "But you're not as confused as him, are you? I mean it's not your job to be as confused as Nigel."

The latest in a string of revelations about the depths of Sarah Palin's ignorance - a Sept. 29 blog post by Politico.com's Jonathan Martin that she's apparently incapable of naming any Supreme Court opinion other than Roe v. Wade - is a reminder that it's not the job of someone who could be a heartbeat away from the presidency to be as confused as the average American.

John McCain's nomination of Palin has turned out to be what can be called an attempt to pull off the Full Nixon. Forty years ago, Richard Nixon figured out that there were a lot of votes to be won by tapping into widespread resentment of "arrogant elites," who thought they were smarter and better informed than their fellow Americans.

For months now, McCain has been hammering away at this theme in regard to Barack Obama, whose Ivy League education is supposed to have infused him with the arrogance and elitism that makes him contemptuous of ordinary folk like, for example, Sarah Palin.

Palin has spent almost her whole life in a very small town in a sparsely populated and extremely isolated state. For reasons that remain obscure, she attended five colleges in six years where, if her public performance to date is any indication, she seems to have learned nothing.

If Palin knows anything at all about national politics or foreign affairs or history or economics or almost anything else one would want a president to know something about, she has till now kept that fact remarkably well hidden.

She is, in other words, the ultimate representative of a kind of out-of-control populism. In its more extreme forms, populist resentment of elites flows from the belief that any ordinary person knows enough to be a good political leader, since political leadership is all about having the right values, and good character, and a pure heart.

This is of course nonsense. It makes about as much sense as saying that performing open-heart surgery or piloting a jumbo jet is all about having the right values.

McCain and his advisers know this, which is why they've spent the last month trying to stuff Sarah Palin full of plausible sound bites of information, so she can at least pretend to know what she's talking about when she's asked questions about the federal government or foreign policy or economics or history, etc.

It's a cynical and incredibly reckless strategy, especially given McCain's age and precarious health. (McCain's odds of dying of natural causes in the next four years are, conservatively speaking, at least one in seven).

It's a sign of how successfully political know-nothingism has been exploited in America that it's even necessary to say this: To do a decent job, the president of the United States needs to be vastly more educated and knowledgeable than the average American.

This is a necessary, though far from sufficient, requirement. And, as Palin's cringe-inducing performance on the national stage illustrates, there are plenty of politicians who are no more qualified to be president than I am to be an NBA power forward.

Consider that the most recent of Tina Fey's hilarious yet horrifying Saturday Night Live parodies of Palin included merely repeating, word for word, one of Palin's rambling and nonsensical answers to CBS interviewer Katie Couric's questions.

That fact by itself ought to disqualify John McCain from the office he seeks.

of Wands, like the other Threes in the Minor Arcana, represents a stage of
initial completion. Here it is the apparent completion of the original creative
idea. There is a cause for celebration, and it seems everything is going according
to plan. Jason has arrived at the place of inheritance, and lo and behold! he
has met with no apparent resistance. Pelias, frightened of the oracle, seems
quite willing to abdicate the throne he has stolen. Thus creative work often
seems to have an initial ease; the right contacts appear as if by magic, the
preliminary sketches look good, and the idea appears to be gathering substance
to itself as though it has been prodded by divine intervention.

But there
is hard work to come, and often new ideas emerge at this stage – things which
we had not at first considered, but which will require delays, alterations of
plans, and a lot more effort than had been anticipated. The Three of Wands
implies a high point, but there is more to follow.
Pelias now tells Jason about the Golden Fleece which lies in Colchis, implying – for his own nasty
reasons – that being king of Iolkos means very little without the restoration
with Zeus’ precious Fleece to the God/s sanctuary. It is at this point after
the initial celebration, that many creative potentials collapse, for the stage
of initial completion is not a final outcome and unless the individual is
willing to take a further gamble the idea cannot be totally realized. The world
is full of unfinished novels sitting in desk drawers, where the first twenty
pages started well. The message here is: Enjoy the satisfaction while you can,
because you are not finished yet. True creative confidence can only be found if
the idea is put to the test and stretches the individual to the utmost.

Cast In Fury is the fourth book in the Chronicles of Elantra series, and I've been waiting for it - I had it pre-ordered a while ago, and luckily for me, I got it a week early. I was in the middle of two other books, but I put them down and started reading this instead! The release date is officially October 1st.

This series is in a fantasy world populated by a few different races living together in the city of Elantra, which is ruled by a dragon emperor. The protagonist is Kaylin Neya, a once orphaned girl living in poverty but who has worked to become a Hawk, one of the three organizations that police her city. What makes her unusual is that she has mysterious words that suddenly showed up on her skin, and linked to them are powers she doesn't really understand, but somehow, when she really needs it, she manages to do amazing things. Her ignorance about how her power works is the reason why some let her live, but she is constantly caught up in power plays and secret politics within the different groups. Book three (Cast in Secret) centered on the Tha'alini, a race of empaths, and book two (Cast in Courtlight) on the Barrani - immortals who remind me of elves. This book touches on them as well but mostly it seems to focus on an issue amongst the Leontines. Her sergeant Marcus, who is Leontine is arrested for murder, which throws the Hawks off balance, and Kaylin is determined to help him, no matter how much he refuses it. There is also an ongoing assignment to babysit a playwright commissioned to write a play about the Tha'alini, who after the events in the previous book, people (incorrectly) fear. The hope is to calm the city with a positive story about them and what happened.

I have no idea what this cover art is supposed to represent - it's strange - the model doesn't look like the same one in other books, I don't recall Kaylin wearing dresses, and she doesn't deal with a huge wall of water being held back with the force of her hand at all. Not in this book. Very puzzling!

Overall: Well I think this was not as strong as some of the other books in this series, but as usual the world and character building is top notch. I felt that this installment did shed a lot of light on the Leontine race and Kaylin's special relationship with Marcus and his wives. The book showed a lot of how Kaylin's personality was influenced by this group - they truly seem like a foster family for her. The ongoing thread which started in the first book and which has continued in others regarding an Outcaste dragon trying to topple the empire also continues. There are a few more revelations about him and I expect that the series won't end until he gets defeated once and for all. Hopefully at the same time Kaylin manages to control and understand her powers.

Other than that, I felt like a trend is starting to develop here. Kaylin is thrown into a situation she knows nothing about regarding a certain race, and this race doesn't want to explain to her their particular history which is the key to solving whatever problem she's facing. Usually the world has to almost end before they finally reveal the big missing piece in the puzzle. In the meantime, she has to ask a lot of questions trying to solve the problem, and there is always someone around to look at her with an impatient air when she does. I'm getting annoyed on her behalf. I'd like to see something a bit different in the next book, and some more focus on her relationships and her powers. Not that I would mind learning more about the Aerians or the Dragons, which seem to be the two races without their own books, but I don't want yet another disaster that threatens a whole city to be the only way to learn about them. It will also be interesting to see what develops with her childhood friend turned steadfast and deadly partner Severn and the mysterious Lord Nightshade, who marked her as his Consort against her wishes. It seems like a subtle ongoing love triangle that gets hinted at throughout the books, and it's fascinating to watch it develop.

My review of Cast in Secret

I was trying to think of who to recommend if you like this author, but nothing quite springs to mind right now. Maybe Robin McKinley if she wrote series? I recommend her backlist.

The two
of Wands, like the other Two of the Minor Arcana, polarizes the raw energy of
the Ace, and here that polarization implies the adventurer and his newly
conceived goal. The restlessness and unformed power of the Ace was has begun to
coalesce as a particular vision, although just how that vision might be achieved
is not at all clear. Jason does not yet know about the Golden Fleece; but he
knows now, because Chiron has told him, that he is a prince and the rightful
heir to the throne of Iolkos, and that this father Aeson has been deposed and
imprisoned by his wicked uncle Pelias. The feeling of potential has here
crystallized into something definite although the real creative adventure of
Jason’s future – the pursuit of the Golden Fleece – will only emerge once Jason
steps forth on the first stage of his journey.

Thus
begin all creative ventures: a little at a time. One idea leads to another, and
often the first one is not the final one, but merely a prelude. However, the
prelude is sufficient to get us moving out of the sanctuary of the cave,
because of the feeling that we could have more than we have, or more than we
are. The journey to Iolkos, the place of his rightful inheritance, is fraught
with danger, for he has an enemy there who would cheerfully take his life. He
cannot predict the outcome, and if he will succeed or fail. But he believes in
his vision enough to try, and firmly grips the wands which symbolize the fire
of the imagination. Otherwise he – or we – would remain peaceful but forever stifled
in the cave, safe but never fulfilling those potentials which are a birthright
but which require vision to bring into concrete being.

Beginning, of all the Deity’s of the universe, four main gods settled in the
new world. They were the God the Sea, the God of the Sky, the Goddess of Earth,
and her sister the Goddess of the Wind. Together they created the land and sea,
gave the world a sky to shelter them, and wind to ill in between.

After a
while the God of the Sea and the Goddess of the Earth became lovers, and as a
result of the consummation, created the first beings to roam the newly born
world. The God and Goddess loved their children and taught them how to survive
and live on the lands they had been born to offering them a peaceful and
prosperous life. The beings each had souls of pure good and light, and granted
various knowledge and magic’s depending on their needs.

The Sky
God, constantly watching the pair fall further and further in love, whilst he
himself grew more envois of their happiness. He had considered courting the
Goddess of the Wind, but she was lithe and frail. Not at all worthy of him, to
subdue to fornicate with one less perfect than he, was preposterous. It was her
sister that he lusted after.

As time
continued, the happy couple created more beings to live within the world, which
they called Serenus, for they lived in peace and harmony. The sky God’s
jealousy became less and less controllable, and this lead to him concocting a
plan to pledge his love to her and concocting a plan to pledge his love to her and
then seducing her, stealing her away from the God of the Sea. The Earth Goddess
immediately rejected the Sky Gods efforts, remaining the Sea Gods faithful
love.

The God
of the Sky became even more enraged at the rejection, and in his blind rage
violently raped the frail defenceless Goddess of the Wind. The God and Goddess
worked together, combining their magic’s to banish him to the heavens for the
crime he had committed. Sadly his consummation had formed new beings, and the
Goddess of the Wind became the mother to a new race of beings, their souls
tainted with hate and darkness.

And so

destruction and sorrow…

In the
Ace of Wands we meet again Zeus, king of the gods, the initiator and moving
power behind the tale of Jason and the Golden Fleece. It is Zeus’ sacred Fleece
that the hero must obtain, and it is this Fleece which serves as a symbol of
the creative vision which spurs us away from the safe, conventional world into
inknown paths toward an imagined goal.

Zeus is
an ancient and potent god, and one of his oldest representations was the
ram-headed deity, the invisible creative power that invisible creative power of
the imagination, which itself cannot be grasped, yet which is responsible for
all the strivings and concrete products of our lives. It is not only the artist
who uses creative products of our lives. It is not only the artist who uses
creative imagination, although in the artist we see its power – and its
infuriating autonomy – most clearly. In the Major Arcana card of the Emperor,
we met the patriarchal side of Zeus the All-Father. Here, in the Ace of Wands,
we meet his volatile spirit, and this Zeus is the capacity to envision a future
potential different from a greater than the concrete envision a future
potential different from and greater than the concrete reality in which we find
ourselves – whether it is a plan for redecorating the sitting room, or a
concept for a new business. Many people do not trust this imaginative faculty,
believing that it is ‘silly’ or ‘childish’, or fearing to take a risk with the
new idea because it might fail. But great Zeus is neither silly nor childish,
and the Ace of Wands, portraying an initial outpouring a raw creative energy,
is a powerful card. The new idea has not yet been formulated, but there is a
profound sense of restlessness, and a feeling of life opening up. It is this
sense which drives Jason on his quest for the Fleece. He could as easily have
simply deposed his uncle Pelias and stayed at home in Iolkos. Thus the Ace of
Wands implies the beginning of the great journey into the world of vision and
imagination, where concrete limitations are overcome, and where life is never
the same afterward.

only gone for a moment, by the time she returned, Jasper already started a fire
and had the hearth Stones heating.

“How much
further before Sangreal?” Miranda asked as she handed the water to Jasper.

“A few
more days travel yet, Girl” he replied, stoking the hearth stones in the fire
with his long handled staff.

“Really?
Will it take that long?” Miranda drew her traveling cloak tighter around
herself. She still felt the stinging tendrils of the icy rivers touch.

“Yes,”
replied Jasper simply. He had barely spoken since their departure that morning
. Usually jovial and fall of small talk, he had been very quiet and subdued all
morning.

This gave
Miranda reason for concern, though she said nothing to him. Instead she
followed her guardian in silence, trying not to show she was in pain. She took
a seat under the tree and rested her back up against it. Her legs felt wobbly
and her feet screamed in pain. The sores on her feet weren’t quite healed from
her previous escape through the woods.
The mornings travel had opened up the old wounds. As she took off the makeshift
foot coverings that Jasper had made for her temporarily, and seen they were
saturated with fluid, oozing from her feet.

Jasper
prepared a special blend of tea for both of them, containing a number of
stimulating herbs and roots, to aid them in their travel. Once alone, he poured
the pleasant smelling orange liquid into two copper goblets which he removed
from his swag. Taking one for himself, he gave the other to Miranda, before
taking a seat next to her, gratefully resting up against the trees sturdy
trunk.

The tea
was refreshing, and Miranda felt its effects rushing like fire through her
veins. She felt the fog that had injured her head; she had found it difficult
to think straight. She still wasn’t entirely sure how the fire had started in
the first place, let alone the real reason behind Jaspers appearance. Not that
she was in any way ungrateful. If it hadn’t been for the Clurician’s patient
care she would never have made it as far as she had. She was badly injured when
he found her.

I've had The Decoy Princess and the following book Princess at Sea in my TBR for a long time, but haven't gotten around to reading them till now. It feels like it's been a while since I read a straight fantasy so it was a nice change of genres. I also have Cooks Truth series and I read the first one of the four, First Truth. That one was a bit slow for me so I haven't started Hidden Truth yet, but the Princess series is a newer work and the premise seemed more intriguing to me so I decided to take a look.

The title says it all - a princess discovers that she was really plucked from the streets as a baby, to be used as a decoy for the real princess of Costenopolie. Unfortunately, she discovers this truth at the same time her betrothed Prince Garrett does, and as second son of a neighboring kingdom with a chip on his sleeve, he reacts with violent anger at being duped. At first I thought that Tessa was superficial and spoiled, but once she discovers who she really is and things start to hit the fan, she quickly adapts and manages to escape the palace on her own. Her plan is to find her sister, the real princess, and Kravenlow, her parent's chancellor, but she is being pursued by Garrett's Captain of the guard, a formidable man named Jeck. Along the way she also meets a cheat named Duncan, who admires Tess for her smarts, but also urges her to throw off her responsibilities and run away with him. The story is told from the first person viewpoint of Tessa, which seems to add to the urgency of the writing. It also felt more real - there was so much detail about how dirty and beat up Tess got from her travelling I wanted to take a shower or soak in the bath. Adding to everything is that Tess, Jeck and Kravenlow are all part of a huge game controlled by hidden "players" who influence history according to their own rules. Book 2 continues about six months or so after book one, and without spoilers it all starts during her sister's honeymoon voyage with her new husband on board Tess' boat. Hmm, can't say much more than that.

Both books followed the same pattern where at first I was just reading along but not really sucked in, and then something would happen and I just had to know what happened next. I admit I did skim ahead because I was really really curious, but then made myself come back and read it properly. There were a few surprises, and unexpected angst. I found most of the characters had layers which got slowly peeled back as time went by, and some things get revealed that I sort of expected, yet didn't quite see it going down that way. Tess is also at turns quite quick thinking, but also blind/dumb when it came to people she really loved. So her weaknesses seem to be linked to naivete, and it's quite painful for her when she realizes them. Once the end of the books came, it felt that the author had planned out the character arcs and plots really well. Both books hint through prophetic dreams at what will happen, but they didn't give me much information and left me only tantalized. I felt rather satisfied by the final result, but I'd like to keep reading about Tess and I'm a bit sad I can't find any information about a third book (I really hope there is one). Dawn Cook's website is very sparse on the details. I know she writes under another name but those books aren't straight fantasy like this. Sigh, I plan to keep my eye out. And to get around to reading the Truth series sooner.

Recommended if you like:

Moira Moore's Hero series (the travelling and action seems similar)

Mindy Klasky's Glasswright series (for the secret society that can trump even kings)

Maria V. Snyder's Study series (Jeck/Tess' relationship reminds me a little of Valek/Yelena's)

Excerpt of book 2 - The Princess at Sea

Guests of honour are Peter Beagle and Joe Abercrombie. Beagle is, according to Farah Mendlesohn (who really knows the field) "one of the very finest fantasy writers, and by finest I mean fine as in Fine Art." Abercrombie is relatively new on the scene, his first book appeared in 2005.
Here, in the card of the King of Cups, we meet the active, dynamic dimension of water, which overtly seeks to form relationships and even to guide and help others. This is embodied in the mythic figure Orpheus, the singer, who was both priest and healer, yet whose own story is sad and lonely although he brought comfort to his fellows. Orpheus was the son of the Thracian King Oeagrus and the Muse Calliope, and he was the most famous poet and musician who ever lived. Apollo presented him with a lyre and the Muses taught him its use, so that he not only enchanted the wild beasts, but made even the trees and rocks move from their places to follow the sound of his music. He joined the Argonauts on their quest for the Golden Fleece, and his music helped them to overcome many difficulties. On his return, he married Eurydice, and settled in Thrace.
But his life was not destined to be happy. One day a man tried to assault Eurydice in the valley of the River Peneius, and she trod on a serpent as she fled and died of its bite. But Orpheus boldly descended into the underworld, hoping to fetch her back. He not only charmed the ferryman Charon, the three-headed dog Cereberus and the three Judges of the Dead with his plaintive music, but temporarily suspended the torturous of the damned, and so far soothed the dark heart of Hades that he won leave to restore Eurydice to the upper world. But Hades made one condition: that Orpheus might not look behind him until she was safely back in the light of the sun. Eurydice followed Orpheus up through the dark passages, guided by the sound of his lyre. But at the last moment lost his trust, and looked back to see whether she was still there; and so he lost her forever.
After this Orpheus took up the role of a priest, teaching the mysteries and preaching the evil of sacrificial murder to the men of Thrace. But the god Dionysos grew jealous of him because his fame spread and men began to worship him as though he were divine. The god set his mad maenads upon Orpheas, and they tore him to pieces in their frenzy. The Muses tearfully collected his limbs and buried them at the foot of Mount Olympus, where the nightingales now sing more sweetly than anywhere else in the world.
Orpheus, the King of Cups, is an image of the wounded healer, the figure who through compassion cannot heal his own hurt in the realm of the heart. In many ways he is the ancient equivalent of many modern social workers and psychotherapists - the individual who longs to be in touch with the world of feeling, and tries constantly to help others to relate, yet who sometimes lacks trust in his or her own personal life and therefore cannot ultimately achieve the fulfilling relationship which is so desired. The King of Cups places human relationships and human love above everything, and will go to great lengths to initiate and preserve this emotional contact. Yet he remains curiously uncomfortable, and must keep looking back to see whether what he has initiated is still behind him, still intact. Thus he often loses the very thing which he most desires. This figure is deeply paradoxical, as though the element of water - which is in many ways an image of the feminine world of feeling - sits uncomfortably with the masculine and dynamic image of the King. The two are awkward together, and create a strange ambivalence. The King of Cups is a moody and sensitive figure, and often gifted with great depth of feeling and a rare gift at communicating that feeling to affect and influence others. But this is the relationship of performer to audience. He himself never quite relinquishes control. It is for this reason Dionysus' maenads, the crowd of ecstatic women who follow in the god's train, dismember him, for in a sense he must first be powerless and metaphorically torn to pieces before he can be something other than the wise counselor to other people's pain. Orpheus himself has no real fulfillment in life, having forfeited his own chance of personal happiness through his mistrust of Hades' word. This in itself tells us a good deal about the King of Cups, for although he may initiate relationship and talk constantly of it, he does not ultimately trust the world of the unconscious, which he cannot see. Thus he is enthroned near the water, but cannot submerge himself in it, for he fears the drowning which letting go to another might entail.
