Saturday we went looking for a hike. Not knowing what we were doing at all. We drove and drove looking for a trail and happened upon another instead. Which was great, because we got to walk to the top of a mountain.

For the Sake of The Children?

Many people believe that a two parent family is better for children to grow up in than a single parent family. Similarly, many of these same people also believe that it's best for children if one parent stays at home full time while they are growing up.

However, these beliefs vary somewhat depending on why a parent is single, and, in the case of two parent families, the gender of the stay at home parent.

There are those people are quick to judge someone who is a single parent by divorce, or never having been married. They point to higher rates of juvenile delinquency, mental illness, diminished grades, poverty, reduced opportunities, etc, as being the typical fallout of growing up in a single parent family. These people sometimes imply that people are selfish for having children without being married or for getting divorced when one has young children. Those contemplating divorce are urged to stay with their spouses "for the children's sake" and those already divorced or never married are advised to marry so that the children can have two parents.

Many people today are under the mistaken impression that single parent families were uncommon before the 1960s. This is a misconception; there have always been a reasonable percentage of one parent families. What has changed is the typical reason why the parent is single. Years ago, most single parent families existed because one parent had died. Nowadays, most single parents are either never-married or divorced.

But it's rare for those people who disapprove of single parent families to criticize those who are single parents by death. Widowed parents get more support and generally are not urged to remarry as quickly as possible. In my own experience, I can't remember anyone advising my father to remarry because I needed a mother, but I was told many times that my son needed a mother and that I was selfish to remain single

It would seem, though, that all the supposed disadvantages of growing up in a single parent family would hold true regardless of why one's single parent was single. The fact that single parent familes by divorce or out of wedlock are often viewed more negatively than single parent families by death would indicate to me that the real issue for these people isn't so much the children's welfare, per se, but rather their disapproval of divorce and having children out of wedlock.

Similarly, many people believe children do better when they have a full time parent at home. By parent, 99 percent of these people mean mother. Many of these same people would take a dim view of a father, single or married, who does not work outside the home for money. And if a mother is single, especially if she's never been married or is divorced, then these same people will call her lazy if she wants to be a full time mother.

Again, whatever benefits there are to having a full time parent or drawbacks of being a "latchkey" kid should be the same regardless of the gender of one's full time parent or why one's single parent is single. This difference in judgment indicates more of a disapproval of wage earning women and unemployed men in two parent families, and being on welfare for single parent families, more so than what is really best for children.

It would be easier if people would state their prejudices openly, rather than trying to disguise them behind a less than altruistic concern for the welfare of children.

Long Overdue Vox Meetup Pictures

I'm slapping these bad boys up here finally. It's all way overdue, I know. July was an awesome month. I got to hang out with a bunch of my Vox friends. First Hannah came to town, so Kelly and Jenny came down for dinner. Gary made his delicious steaks.

I just feel like talking about stuff

The weather this morning is "GORGEOUS*! Can it be autumn now??? It feels like it. Just gorgeous!!!

I'm a bit out of sorts, but the weather is soothing at least. I'm burned out on work, way out of balance as far as life in general, and very worried about Jadine and the family.

I'm getting so burned out that I even feel crispy. I've been working hard the past couple of weeks, but not playing hard, more like playing vegetable. My brainz hurt, and it doesn't occur to me to do anything by keep breathing. *shrug* I'm getting work done though, and that's good. I just need to budget my time better, so I get to the stress-relieving, sanity-preserving kinds of activities *before* I've hit the stare into space and drool point. I could use some exercise too. I don't understand why spending the whole day working through mental knots should leave me completely physically exhausted, but it does. I try to take regular breaks to do things like tend my garden, hang the laundry, and make some clean spots around the house, so it's not like I just sit for hours on end. *shrug* I'll figure this out.

I loved last night's SYTYCD finale, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone. ...But I want to talk... Ok. If you don't want to know anything about it, AVERT YE EYES! THAR BE SYTYCD SPOILERS BELOW!!!! I'll avoid names though, as far as results go. That would only be fair, since I'm too lazy to hide stuff in my Vox posts.

First, they danced all of my favorite routines from the season! I was so happy (and pre-menstrual) that I cried. Had loads of goosebumps too. (I'm a fangrrl, I know.) I would've liked to have seen that scary-carnival Mia Michaels routine again though, the one on par with Wade Robsin's work. That was like dark candy! Mary Murphy danced last night, and WOW!!! It makes it so much easier to put up with her screeching knowing that she can move like that! I kept thinking, "That's HOT!...No, that's Mary Murphy!!!...But DAMN!!!" The things I was feeling were so WRONG! heh. That chick can move though! DAMN!!! I could've done without the Jonas Brothers, but the Cirque performance was AWESOME! Scary, dancing bunnies and dark humor and the Cirque du Soleil! It's like they planned that one *just for me*. Delightful! As for the results? The final three were all my favorites, and I couldn't have picked between them, so once it got down to those three, I was ok with whatever happened from there. The one who won absolutely deserved it though. So very talented! ...Now I wait until next year for season five. *sigh*

Ok. I've survived another morning. (*spit*) My mission for this weekend is to play hard, whatever that may entail. I need to restore some balance in my life.

Down The Shore

When I was growing up, we had a summer family tradition – no tradition isn’t quite the right word – "ritual" seems more correct. Every (and I mean damn near every) Sunday during the summer, we would pack up the family and head “down the shore”.

Specifically, we would drive down and visit my grandmother at her summer house and then head over to Cape May for several hours of beach time. We’d then head back, get cleaned up, all go out to dinner (to the same restaurant) and then head home – often arriving back to the Ancestral Betz Home after 10 pm. Did I mention that my father worked six days a week and that Sunday was his only “day off”? Wow.

Now Dad liked to drive and since we were going to take all of Sunday, he liked to take the back roads down to The Villas. (The Villas -- where my grandmother's house was -- is a small town on the bay-side, just a few miles from Cape May, which is on the ocean side…). We would stop at road-side produce stands (New Jersey is afterall the Garden State, you know) and pick up tomatoes and peaches for Nan and ourselves. When I was about 12, Nan sold the Villas house, my brother married, my sis moved out of the house, and the ritual stopped.

So, while we were home and visiting my brother and his family, we decided to re-visit the family tradition. So that Sunday morning, we packed up the family and headed down the shore – I even convinced my brother to attempt to find the backroads that Dad had so consistently kept to.

It was great fun. We only got turned around the wrong way once (ok, maybe twice…) and we made it to the Villas in what we thought was surprisingly good time. We went to see where Nan’s house had been (sadly re-sided in icky blue vinyl and the lot where I remember playing sub-divided), and went the few blocks down to the bay – an area that had seen better days.

After that, we were off to the beach (with me covered by both sunscreen and umbrella). The lifeguards weren’t very busy as the water temp was abnormally cold, but we hung out for a while enjoying the sights and salt air, and the Beloved and I took a walk, watching kids play in the sand (just like when I was a kid…) and even New Jersey surfers (never there when I was a kid…), until a late thunderstorm sent everyone scurrying for their cars.

We had a great seafood dinner (sadly the family ritual restaurant was no more), and got ice cream, and headed back. It was a really great day full of old and new memories.

I think Dad would have approved.

The Rules Of Engagement

For when you are dealing with the recently unemployed ( my youngest daughter, who lives with me, lost her job last Wed):
1) When they ask you to read what they have written and ask you to give them your opinion - they really don't want your opinion, & if you allow them to trick you into giving them one you do so at your own risk.

2) Get use to hearing the screeching words- ''It's easy for you to say "be calm", YOU have a job!'' You are going to hear it often...do not try to calm them down, they will hate you for it.

3) ANYTHING that goes wrong for the unemployed person is automatically going to be your fault, even if you had nothing to do with it....even if you were across town at the time - You will be needing body armor and freaking nerves of steel.

If there is a hell on earth, I know the address, because it's at my house. In fact, I am seriously considering running away from home. I cannot take this for long...
