I’m going to open this by admitting that I was wrong. I was wrong! It seems Tamba Hali cannot even win against a back up offensive tackle. And it also seems Larry Johnson is being paid millions of dollars because he earned two whole yards. Yet he’s upset that the Chiefs put Charles as the running back in the fourth quarter. I have a lot I want to get off my mind, so I’m not wasting any time.

Let’s all admit the fact that today the Chiefs were awful on all three phases of the game. Offensively, this team either turned the ball over, or went three and out. The only time this offense began to get things going was in the fourth quarter in which the game was already over and the Panthers were just playing prevent defense. I won’t get on Gunther Cunningham’s back because this defense had to play for nearly 39 minutes and it’s been like that all year. While Dustin Colquitt competes with Tony Gonzalez to be the team MVP, Dantrell Savage gets a -10 yard punt return. Savage can make players miss, but he tries too hard as he keeps going side to side.

I have to credit the defense for their play. They gave up two some touchdowns early in the game, but they made up for their errors by forcing a fumble and intercepting a pass in the endzone while the Chiefs still had a chance to get back in the game. However, the Chiefs offense could not come up with anything as the score speaks for itself.

Let me start with Larry Johnson and let me remind you that he is coming off of a successful week while gathering 198 yards. Herb Taylor stepped up for Branden Albert as well. I felt that Carolina’s defense was as similar to Denver’s. It didn’t seem that way as Johnson only gained two yards off of seven carries. Johnson had tripled the amount of carries compared to the yardage he earned. Heck, Tony Gonzalez had more receptions than Johnson had total yards.

Damon Huard didn’t like he was prepared in this game as he threw two interceptions for 86 yards as he got beat up by the Panthers defensive line as well.

The only highlight in this game was Tony Gonzalez setting the record for most receiving yards by any tight end in NFL history. I have yet to see a congratulatory statement from Shannon Sharpe, even though we should not expect one out of him.

Overall, this team was just awful. This is the first time the Kansas City Chiefs got shut out since December of 2002 against the Oakland Raiders in the season finale. And there could have been a possibility that the Chiefs could have been shutout more than once this year. I have a lot on my mind to share throughout the week with you all. One thing I will say is, Herm Edwards no longer earns the right being the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. I’ll talk more about Edwards tomorrow. But for now, this is an embarrassing loss and Herm Edwards could find himself out of town before the next game as the Chiefs head into the bye week. I’ll have more tomorrow.

I've never heard any of those DJ-Kicks compilations that seem to be considered sort of cool, and I guess I'm not talking about mixtapes in general, although those are also considered to be cool, unless you are a member of the RIAA, in which case you think they blow and anyone selling or compiling them should be thrown into prison, at least until the mixtape buzz is figured into the marketing. I have been into the Ed Banger roster of personalities (if I actually lived in France, would that make me lame?) for at least over a year, and I keep pillaging the interwebs in search of the faintest distorted fuzzhouse beats for me to jam to on my ipod [for two weeks, before playing the shit out]. My favorite new finds (again, new to me = out of fashion) have been a couple of Justice live appearance that were soundboard recorded and pirated, I'm assuming, with their permission, since these were commissioned jobs they've already been paid for blahblah. The Fader, who I sometimes allow to tip me off to new music, has your access.

A couple breaks bootlegs to get your Monday going

(By the way, bootleg means it's unauthorized, unreleased, or otherwise illegitimate in some fashion. Lots of remixes never get approved by the original artists, samples don't get cleared, etc, and these tracks become bootlegs.)

I would love it if all of you lovely Vox folks could make it out some night to hear me spin. But since that's not an option, and since I can't just upload an hour or more of DJ set, I just share some of my great tracks with you all from time to time.

Over the last couple weeks I've scored a couple excellent underground bootlegs that I'm pretty happy with. This first one is a track I've been looking for for about a year. It is NOWHERE, not even on discogs.com, and they have a record of EVERYTHING. Liquid Todd plays it on the Sirius Breakbeat channel once in a while. It's a remix of the Foo Fighters track Everlong, done by Cates & DPL. It's a pretty awesome track, but I have to admit, part of why I love this track is its exclusivity. It's REAL hard to find. I performed some Interweb nerdery to locate it. And there's something amusing about the fact that when I did finally find it, it was 1 AM, I was in bed on my laptop in a Best Western in Tulsa. :-)

As with any remix, it helps if you like the original.

Crofton, Maryland's resident breakbeat something or other (and label head) cereal killaz does his thing on the

ass tearout, he's added a big dose of big room trancey prog into it, creating a remix that is sure to light up the
up for it uk club crowd (you like my use of the phrase "up for it"). now, that said - it's still on the fast side, but
for a sub-genre that, in my estimation, isnt seeing the dynamic releases that it's used to seeing, this is something that is a breath of fresh air.

Mikael Johnston of Mephisto Odyssey

- Original has some very nice electro style synth work ... and would go down well in an electro or tech house set. The stand out track for us is the Cereal Killaz remix. Cereal Killaz are doing some of the best tear-out breaks on the east coast and this track is no exception. This one would feel at home in any peak hour breaks set, or could make excellent film music for something like Miami Vice 2 (if they were to make it lol), or any other cool action / thriller sequence for film or TV. Love the use of the female vox in the break down before it slams back in. Great track dynamics, drama and intensity is the name of the game whenever you hear the Cereal Killaz. Keep it up!

Simply Jeff

All three tracks are great in their own way. The Original is a no nonsense mix. Straight to the point with catchy hooks and solid beats that will instantly get you moving. The Cereal Killaz mix is a tuff tear out mix complete with heavy analog bass riffs and nice synth layers that changes up in the mix quite beautifully. The Discosynthetique remix is a cool electro breaks track with great stutter edits that gives a nice glitchy groove. All in all a mix for everyone who love more than one style of breaks!

Cereal Killaz Performance Reel 2008

It includes footage from Starscape 2008 of myself and the people dancing as well as some crazy background letterbox animations I created to add some more color to the video. The best thing I think of the entire video, besides the music, lol, is the intro logo animation I created ... lemme know what you think :)

Crate digging, groove mining, recontextualizing

One of the great things about the sharity blogs is that many of the albums ripped, uploaded, and blogged are done so by fans. While some bloggers just cut and paste the Wikipedia or AMG entries for albums into their blog posts, others write a couple "why I like this record" paragraphs, and for me that often influences me to download and have a listen rather than pass. If a band has a fan who can articulate the reasons for their fandom, that makes a good case for me possibly liking it too. (On the other hand, even the worst bands have fans; ultimately the proof is in the listening.) So that's how I happened to be listening to the "second German only LP of excellent funky prog" by early 70s British blues-rock band Rumplestiltskin. I found it to be all right, with some inspired passages, but mostly rather plodding. And then track six opens up with a wildly funky guitar lick, and I had high hopes for the song; an acoustic guitar comes in, that doesn't bode well, but maybe it'll pick up; then some drums, not very funky, but still promising; and then it all fizzles out into a milquetoast vocal verse:

Things pick up in the middle of the song, with an uplifting "wizard gospel" chorus and then a repeat of that opening guitar lick, but it winds right back down. That got me thinking of the whole practice of crate digging (scouring boxes of old records for long-lost songs that might pack a modern dancefloor) and groove mining (scouring boxes of old records for long-lost songs that include funky bits that might be sampled and repurposed as a dance record rhythm loop); is that good? Is it right just to pick and choose bits of old records out of context without trying to appreciate the original organic whole that they came from? Well, it was trying to appreciate the whole that had me listening to the record in the first place, and I tried, but really I just like those few bits and pieces. And I don't think it's my fault for being shallow, I think the original organic whole just isn't good enough. (The second part of the description I quoted above is "by UK session/library heroes Alan Hawkshaw, Clem Cattini and Herbie Flowers amongst others," one of those others being guitarist Alan Parker. He laid down plenty of funky licks for library records; I'll try to dig up one or two prime examples for a future post.)

Then there are modern records which are little (or nothing) more than drumbeats; Shawn Lee has done several of them, and even James Brown's legendary drummer Clyde Stubblefield has made some. Some put some music over the beats, but not enough to make an actual song. Take the recent EP by MRR-ADM (Michael Raymond Russell & Adam Douglas Manella):

Awesome beats, but not much music there. Recontextualizing old licks with new beats, then, can benefit both the old and the new. Not that these beats will go with the Rumplestiltskin lick, or that I want to spend my time putting beats and licks together; more power to those who do.

Finally, there are some works that need no manipulation to be recontextualized: for instance, Black Sabbath's heavy metal classic "Supernaut" needs little, if any, tweaking to fit into an industrial-groove set (but that hasn't stopped Al Jourgensen from covering it--twice):

That's got to be Tommy Iommi's best lick ever, and that drum break in the middle is pure breakbeat funk! Was that just a response to the Stones' fancy percussion on "Sympathy for the Devil"? Whatever the case, "Supernaut" was Bill Ward's shining moment, and it showed another side to Sabbath that made them truly great; far better than the crop of doom/sludge bands they engendered, who I imagine can only appeal to people who have lost all interest in life. Electric Wizard, anyone?
