Could you believe that ? Lesson: Do not underestimate the power of impulse buying...

http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2008/08/20/the-1-paid-app-koi-pond/

Micro-transactions, micro-revenues. It's all getting very interesting on the iTunes app store because people are already familiar with hitting that Buy button for impulse music purchases.

PS: I couldn't believe it for myself for a while.

My MacBook Pro is in the shop again. Same symptoms: it turns on like normal--chimes, keyboard lights up, everything--except there's no signal to the monitor. Or any monitor, for that matter (I have an external here at work, and the Apple "genius" tried it on his). I can turn on VoiceOver, hear the robot describe to me the log-in screen. I can even log in, but get no picture.

Going to state the obvious, but this is something of an impediment for a graphic designer.

Last time they replaced the motherboard and the logic board. This time, it's being sent to the "depot." My guess is that they'll do the same. Last time, it worked for about three weeks. This time, I hope it can make it at LEAST through September. Hey, set your sights high, huh?

Apparently I'm not alone. I found a 100+ page thread on the Apple support forums, and apparently it's just one of many. Seems like MacBook Pros purchased around July/August of 2007 (the Santa Rosa chipset) are experiencing similar issues. No screen, and when you boot into the machine with Screen Sharing, it doesn't recognize the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M graphics chip. The default solution seems to be to replace the logic board, but from what I've read, that's where the GPU is, so what seems like a good idea becomes a dice roll--hope I get a good one this time!

The issue's been around for a few months now, but apparently there's been no response from Apple or NVIDIA. I love Apple and their products, but come on, give me something that works!

More reading:

NVIDIA says "significant quantities" of laptop GPUs are defective, stock tumbles (via Engadget)

Santa Rosa MacBook Pros experience video failures (via MacNN)

One of the reasons I bought an iPod touch in November, as opposed to a
cheaper, vaster iPod classic that I could use to store all of my music,
was that it held out the promise of being an interesting device to fit
into Apple's slowly-expanding range of devices that hang off iTunes. I
don't just mean in the obvious "iTunes organises your music" sense,
either, but by using iTunes library sharing and the music streaming
that the AirPort Express enables.

It took months, and the release of the App Store, but one of Apple's two apps - and the only one that's free - is Remote. As Apple put it,

With
Remote, you can control the music on your computer or Apple TV from
your iPod touch or iPhone. Play, pause, skip, shuffle. See your songs,
playlists, and album art on your iPod touch or iPhone as if you were
right in front of your computer.

Better writers than me have outlined some of the ways that Remote actually improves on the user interface
of "Mobile iTunes", the native interface to the music stored on an iPod
touch. (In short, it provides much more contextual information within
the space provided.) However, I used it and saw three things that it
could do, but doesn't, although I readily admit each might have issues
that stand in the way of an implementation.

No Cover Flow

Mobile
iTunes uses the iPod's orientation sensor to swap from a list view to
the Cover Flow view, which lets you see lots of artwork and scroll
through it. Remote doesn't do anything with the orientation sensor at
all, and certainly doesn't use full-size artwork.

There are two
explanations I can think of. The trivial is that Cover Flow might be
getting out of favour in Cupertino, just like metal windows did before
it. The more sensible is that the demands on a network - even a
wireless network - of downloading all the images are too high. Heck,
even when copying from the "disk", my iPod can't refresh the entire
list at once. Nonetheless, a man can dream, and it would be nice if the
app had some sort of horizontal mode.

No streaming

In an ideal world, I'd have speakers in every room, connected to an
AirPort Express, and I'd be able to wander around the house with the
same music playing out of every speaker. (Actually, ideally, something
would know where I was and switch the speakers on and off as required,
but let's stick with what we have, shall we?) However, I can't afford
that many wireless routers, so instead I'd be quite happy to wear the
iPod and listen to it instead. Apple don't let you do that, despite the
fact that's how shared iTunes libraries work.

There is, once again, a possible technical reason for this. The iPod
might not be up to decoding all the different formats in your iTunes
library; in particular, Apple Lossless might be a problem. However, it
can play local lossless files, and I can't see that shifting the data
is that much harder. I'm hoping this shows up as an option in a new
release.

Since I first thought about writing this, two things have happened. Firstly, the tech press noticed an Apple patent filing discussing the "Remote access of media items",
which goes beyond the capabilities of shared libraries at present (as
it mentions syncing metadata). Secondly, Simplify Media released their client for iPods
with the 2.0 software. However, I'm unhappy about having to run a
second application just to cater for the chance I'd like to stream.
(Interestingly, a recent blog post notes issues with cover art and bandwidth, so there may be something to the technical issues after all.)

No shared libraries

This is the biggest problem for me personally, and it could be the
easiest to fix. It's straightforward: there's no way to use Remote to
connect to a shared library. There are reasons you'd want this: an
office server that doesn't have music of its own, but instead which
plays from lots of other people's machines, or perhaps a laptop which
relies on an iMac as the source of a home's entire music. While you
could argue that you should connect Remote to the server in the latter
case, that's not going to work out if you're using mt-daapd, and it doesn't work in the first case either, since the music won't come out of the server's speakers.

This does of course raise a few issues with the user interface, but
Steve Jobs employs some very smart people, and I'm sure there's a way
to deal with it. So there's my wishlist for a future version. Shared
libraries, streaming to the iPod, complete with a Cover Flow view.
Sure, it's tricky, but then, don't fanboys always demand the
near-impossible of Apple?

seems a random app crash bug plaguing the iPhone 2.0 software has
concerned El Jobso enough to make him personally reply to a user email.
According to AppleInsider
one of their readers received an email from Jobs that read "this is a
known iPhone bug that is being fixed in the next software update in
September."

AppleInsider says the app crash bug affects newly downloaded and
updated apps, where they instantly quit upon launch. Sometimes
reinstalling them helps, sometimes it doesn't. While the 2.0.1 and
2.0.2 updates have done nothing to remedy the problem, some speculate
that the problem revolves around root permissions. Either way, this is
the first Apple acknowledgment of the problem. [Apple Insider]

Apple has released iPhone OS 2.0.2 with its obligatory, but unhelpful, release notes indicating only "bug fixes."

Unfortunately, a resolution to widespread, frustrating 3G reception issues is not among those fixes. In fact, some users have reported that the update manifests poorer 3G reception than 2.0.1, with devices now giving a "No Service" message in previously 3G-accessible locations.

"I use to get one to three bars of 3G service in my house and now I can't make a call," wrote an Apple poster. "I have to switch off the 3G to get any bars. Things are going the wrong way!"

Even worse, many users are experiencing incompatibility with previously operational third-party applications. "Yes, I have about 15 apps loaded and now only eight to ten work with the new 2.0.2 software," said a user. Some are reporting even worse predicaments. "All my downloaded applications crash within 5 seconds of being opened," said another person. "Restarting the phone and reapplying update has done nothing to fix it."

What does iPhone OS 2.0.2 fix? Both typing and scrolling, which were plagued by extreme lag and slowness prior to this update, are now operating at acceptable speeds for many users, but not all.

"[The update] didn't improve my 3G signal, or my signal in general for that matter," said a poster. "And I still am getting the keyboard lag."

iPhone OS 2.0.2 can be installed by attaching your iPhone to your Mac or Windows computer then clicking the "Update" button. Based on current reports, however, the benefits may not outweigh the risks.

The folks behind Palringo
have swiftly delivered on a promise to add Push-to-Talk functionality
to their multi-client IM app for the iPhone. Like their desktop
version, the new update allows iPhone users to send vocal IM messages
by holding down a contact button while speaking. When released, the
audio recording will be delivered directly to the recipient.

Playback can be initiated automatically or manually depending on
your preference, and if your chosen client does not support PTT, the
message will be delivered as a link that the recipient can follow.
Whether you are into PTT or not, it is a nice addition to an app that
won't cost you a dime.

As we all know, Microsoft used the tagline "what do you want to do today?" (or "where do you want to go today?" in web-related ads) in a lot of PR, whilst Apple tended to stick with "Think Different" or, in earlier advertisements, "Tomorrow's PC, today" or variations on that theme. So, putting aside all the hyperbole, it seems that both are focusing on pushing the user experience, as opposed to the hardware itself. Windows' advertising aims itself at the audience by asking what you want and, by implication, suggesting that Windows has the ability to get you there. Apple tedns to position itself as a bit left-field, more creative in its thinking and thus better able to understand your needs. In fact, in reality, its products do tend to meed the users' expectations far better, so maybe it's a case of the ads just reporting on the reality. However, all this talk of advertising is getting me away from the crux of what I wanted to talk about, which is that, whilst I love older Macs, just how useful are they? Should I stop lusting after a quad G5 with full RAM and top-spec graphics and settle for a brand new top-of the line iMac instead, given the cost of G5s at the moment? Is there any value in buying last-gen technology when the current stuff is available from such (comparitively) low costs?

Well, maybe not in the case of a G5, as it's no longer the top-dog workhorse and prices are artificially high from all those private owners who are trying to recoup the cost of purchase and are, thus, maybe being a little unrealistic in their acceptance of depreciation. For example, I bought a Xeon-powered Windows workstation in 2002 that cost in excess of £10000 (for a business I was running). It had 4GB of RAMBUS memory, a 128mb Wildcat graphics card, Audigy soundcard with I/O box, etc and is still usefully quick today. However, it's worth about £4.50 if I stick it on eBay and I think the G5 towers are suffering the same thing - they're more than just useful (in fact, only those who are doing feature film editing or working on high resolution images for use on billboards are likely to call them slow, but adding the full compliment of RAM would help with that). However, if I can buy an old quad G5 with monitor and it costs £1000-£1500 by the time the bidding stops, why wouldn't I just save up a bit more and get a new quad-core, dual CPU MacPro? Or buy an iMac 24" with dual-core 2.8GHz and 512mb Nvidia graphics? I'm not being a nay-sayer, as I still love the old G5, but the fact is that people are being unrealistic in the market value at the moment, so I'd steer clear for a year until they drop through the floor. They'll still be able to edit your video, or tinker with your photos, but you won't pay through the nose for it.

So why do I like the G5 so much? Well, aside from the design, which is a thing of Bauhaus-ian beauty inside and out, the fact is that I like the ability to fire up Classic mode and use all my old applications without the need to run an emulator. Not only that, but as someone whose home computing is mainly web-surfing, blogging and the occasional bit of image and video work, a G5 is more than adequate. Even my desire to get back to doing some Flash and Director coding is not going to tax it. Also, I'm always nervous about my main workstation being an all-in-one, as if the screen dies, I can't work, whereas if my old PowerMac screen died, I could change the monitor and carry on. That, and I'd really like the 30" display on my desk for artwork and layout work. Then again, the 24" iMac would be fine for that, too. Basically, whilst I am what would be considered a power user, the G5 would do all I need and be fast enough. Hell, my old G4 was fast enough. This is really the point - do you want the latest, greatest, oh-my-god-it's-so-fast machine to boast to your friends, or do you want to actually get stuff done. If it's the latter, then most Macs still running are useful (for a given value of useful). You can word process, do some DTP or web design, look at your photos, listen to tunes and edit/watch a movie. Who can honestly say they use a home computer for much else? Especially if you own a PS3 for gaming? Not me, that's for sure - I want something reliable (so I don't come in from work and then get stressed during my leisure time by a computer that won't work), well designed and that is quick enough.

So what is "quick enough"?

Last post, I talked about my love of Silicon Graphics machines, but the truth is that the central processors in them are slow. The machines are usable because of the huge array of custom hardware taking work away from the CPU, but in the Megahertz wars, they are trounced by cheap Intel chips. What they are, though, is stable. my old Iris Indigo was only ever rebooted when software installations required it. My Powermac G4 was also stable - working quite happily for weeks at a time until Software Update asked me to reboot. This means that renders can be left overnight if needs be, safe in the knowledge that they'll be done in the morning. If I left my windows machine to do that, it'd crash and reboot or run slower and slower until I restarted because Windows leaves junk in the memory and bloats its registry. So, in real world terms, the Windows machine was screamingly quick, but because it would require at least one restart a day, the truth is you only got the same amount of work done. Now, if the MacPro has all of the clock speed and none of the instability of a high end Windows machine, then it will be a thing of wonder, but in the real world, I think I'd get a good two or three years out of a quad G5 mac, because I don't really care if it takes an extra half hour to render out my hour-long film - I'll be billing for time if it's work and drinking tea and chatting to my wife if it's something I am doing as a hobby. In fact, the ability to let it chug away whilst I stare out of the window is a plus point in my books - it forces me to slow down and relax a little, as opposed to tearing along at 90mph all day, then getting in and doing the same in my leisure time. "Quick enough" means that a machine doesn't take two hours to respond to a key-press, but that it might take a little while to think about some hugely intensive task. It means you might not be able to do fifty things at once all at a million miles per hour, but that you would surely be able to do the tasks you were trying to do. Given that criteria, the G5 is perfect for me and, depending on the cost, I hope to pick up a quad G5 with maximum RAM and top end graphics ASAP.

So, there you go - buy a G5 and avoid a heart attack. Surely that's a tagline that someone can use?

"We have already made many improvements to MobileMe, but we still have
many more to make. To recognize our users' patience, we are giving
every MobileMe subscriber as of today a free 60 day extension. This is
in addition to the one month extension most subscribers have already
received. We are working very hard to make MobileMe a great service we
can all be proud of. We know that MobileMe's launch has not been our
finest hour, and we truly appreciate your patience as we turn this
around"

I ran out of patience a long time ago, they offer us 3 months free of charge but only because it don't work anyway, too funny ; ]

News
is just out of a new way to jailbreak your iPhone, and this time the
tool is specifically designed to work "quickly and easily, without
requiring a full restore." Quickpwn has been released as a beta,
intended to complement the main PwnageTool.
It works with iPhones and iPod's running 2.0.1 firmware, and operates
very quickly without needing iTunes to rebuild/restore your device
afterwards. This beta version is basically feature-complete, but lacks
a "funky UI" (they're adding that soon) and is currently windows only
(other OS's are "coming soon"). It's available here.
Keep your eyes open for a complete version (though remember that even
though it's development software, it's apparently "impossible for this
to permanently damage your device").

Apple has a lot to fix in their upcoming iPhone software update... with this, and the 3G reception being less than stellar. The fellow in the last video compares it to Windows 95, which may be closer to the mark for other reasons.

We went to the Mall today and you should have seen the line out the door at the Apple store. We have a sales tax free weekend in our state yesterday and today. A paid police detail was monitoring the behavior of the line. One of the store personnel was out there demo-ing the AirBook. It is so appealing. But it has very few ports and I don't think there is a place for the memory card from my camera. That's a deal killer for me.

Then we stopped at Brookstone's and took a look around. We haven't been in there for a long time. They have the most amazing things to solve problems you didn't know you had! It was very impressive to see how many different forms of iPod speakers are available, ranging from personal space speakers to parking meter size boomers. Then there are the sleep aids. Blankets, snore pillows, machines for playing an array of sounds to lull one to sleep. It is wasted on us as we fall asleep the minute we hit the sack. And we certainly don't have to play the 'rain' sound...as it has been raining most nights this summer....Finally we stopped at the tiny Starbucks in the Mall. Two biscotti and cappucino for R and doppio machiatto for me. Totally necessary.

For a long time, I've been a proponent of refurbished digital products, such as cameras and accessories. My success rate with recertified products has been pretty high. Although everything seems to be built in China, the rehab work appears to be done by U.S. employees, who earn more in a day than a Chinese assembly worker makes in a week.

Here are a few wins and losses:

Last year, a factory-refurbished Canon Powershot digital camera (A570is) produced "Outer Limits" images, right out of the box. Blurry, jaggy, like a 1960s Zenith TV. Every other Canon camera I've owned -- new, used, whatever -- worked fine. My verdict: damaged in transit. The retailer gave a full refund.

Kodak's refurbished digital cameras have proven a good deal. Same one-year warranty as a new model. On the other hand, my very recently acquired new M1033 -- a really cool camera -- mysteriously quit after my last national convention. Kodak has a one-year warranty, so assuming you don't dunk it in the Atlantic Ocean, they'll bring it back to life. Or serve up a refurb that will keep me happy.

<div at:enclosure="asset" at:xid="6a00cdf7efaeb6094f00fae8d6403e000b" at:format="large" at:align="center"

My Nikon D50 digital SLR is a factory refurb. It's never let me down. The 55-200mm lens I bought for it quit during a shoot last summer; Nikon replaced it.

The Fuji F31fd compact digital camera I bought for low-light point-and-shooting is a refurb. It's a winner. I may have landed the last one; Fuji doesn't sell them on their refurb site anymore.

Olympus FE-290 camera: works fine, but it's nothing extraordinary. A good deal if you want a wide-angle lens in a compact camera.

Apple iPods: hard to tell. They didn't refurbish my original Gen. 5 iPod, but they sent me a refurbished 30GB iPod that seems to work fine. Verdict: iPods get more abuse than just about any other digital product, so buy the extended warranty.

Kodak AiO printers: I really like the new printers. Aside from the cool, jet-black makeover they've received, they can read 4GB SDHC memory cards that my old card reader can't. But the refurb I bought from Woot.com arrived with a bad print head. I've replaced the printhead, and it works OK.

(Does it look like Kodak hired Darth Vader to design its new cameras and printers? Very Dark Side, it seems.)

So, my verdict is: big-name manufacturers seem to get refurbishing their products right, most of the time. But I would verify the length of the warranty that the maker offers with the refurb, just in case.

And this hot summer of creepy Jocker will see the setting of tyhe ring for the big battle ever in electronics cheduled for the next Xmas season.

On top of that the edge of the battlefield will not stop on the retail store but will be even more fierce on the net where Nokia is ready to do battle with the Apple and challenge iTunes with his Ovi, now that they Own Naviteq, and so handle the biggest spplier of maps, and that all the major seems to have signs the deal which will let Nokia sell them mobiles with a very appealing music stand alone offert and after month of testing I can bet their next stp will be to official open the Ovi in a full version!

When you become the most popular kid in the class, you also become the one with a big bull's eye on your back. Such may be the case with Apple. An overheated hype machine for its cell phone, a lock on the online music business, and sundry devices desired by millions.

A backdating stock options scandal and rumors about the health its CEO don't help matters much either. For a quick look at how that's all going down, one need look no further than the Happy Hour show on the Fox Business channel with yours truly:
