Another "Hetta Music" feature!

Shortly after Heather and I were married, I decided to buy her this CD.  She had been saying since I'd met her that she felt like there wasn't anything out there anymore that she could really enjoy.  She had basically gotten nauseated by what she was hearing on the radio, and she didn't know where to look for something more interesting.  (By the way, since we've been married, her love of music has rekindled big time, and she continues to find new stuff that she likes, which is cool.  Her brother and sister just found out yesterday that she likes a number of country music groups, and that really surprised them both.)

Anyway, after hearing her lament her condition again and again, I bought this CD and put it on her iPod.  After coming back from a walk, she said to me that, yes, I was right that she would like this band.  The Choir has an interesting, acoustic-based "alternative" rock sound and something of a sense of the morose.  The words to this tune describe a woman everyone of us has met or will meet at some point in our lives.

I hope you all are doing okay.  Heather's sister, Stacy, is in town for a few days (and Heather is struggling with feeling guilty for spending time with her because of all the work we have to do), and my sister's husband, Mical, is safely back from Afghanistan until the end of the month.  At that time, he will go back for the second 4.5 months of his term.  And (it's SO important for me to tell you this), I'm having a great time following Canadian football this summer.

Haven't really heard much bout this girl Kira Grannis, though apparently she's secured a deal with Interscope since early 2008.

Lovely voice, check her out. Not sure if I can label her as a YouTube phenom but whatever. I'm impressed. Very nice Hallelujah cover too.

Due to the recent success of my company Lullaby Babies (www.lullaby-babies.co.uk) I am devoting all my efforts to trying to get my latest album released into the mainstream market. 

Lullaby Babies specialises in the creation and production of audio products for babies and young children.  Sales of previous products have been exceptional despite only having a very limited distribution network.  My latest album 'Acoustic Lullabies to Soothe the Soul' is, in my opinion, my best piece of work to date.  It features special arrangements and recordings of ten traditional lullabies.  I used acoustic instruments to produce a wholesome, pure sounding album that is a breath of fresh air for babies and parents alike!

If anyone can give me any advice about how to borrow a pair of a&r ears for a few minutes- it would be very much appreciated!

I discovered Sam Beam's work a while ago, but it was only recently that I started learning to play some of his songs on guitar.  It's amazing how simple the melodic progression in most of his music is, but the lyrics absolutely bring the songs to life.  He's one of my favourite songwriters now, as well as being among my favourite artists.  I can't think of anything more relaxing to fall asleep to.  'Music to fall asleep to' would be a good genre description, but it implies tedium, and to say that anything produced by Iron & Wine is tedious would be grossly in error.

On Thurs 21st August I'll be performing at "On The Rox", above The Roxy in West Hollywood, L.A.!

A little about the venue...

The Roxy itself is one of America's most legendary and influential music venues. It was opened on September 23rd, 1973 by Elmer Valentine and Lou Adler, along with original partners David Geffen and Elliot Roberts, who took over a building occupied by a strip club called "The Largo".

The history of The Roxy Theatre is paved with icons. From Neil Young's performance at it's opening night to Bruce Springsteen's now-classic 1975 performance. Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention recorded most of their celebrated "Roxy & Elsewhere" album there during December 1973 and Warren Zevon's live album "Stand In The Fire" was recorded during five shows he played at The Roxy in 1980. Hundreds of famous and yet-to-be-famous bands have graced it's stage over the years including Guns N' Roses, Miles Davis, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Doors, Tori Amos, Al Stewart, Pearl Jam and David Bowie... to name a few.

 I'll be performing at "On The Rox" above the club and overlooking Sunset Blvd. The appropriately named after-hours club has been the setting for some of Hollywood's hottest celebrity parties. Calling the small "On The Rox" club legendary is an understament. In it's past it's been host to a tremendous amount of grotesque debauchery. It was a regular hangout for John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, Alice Cooper and Keith Moon during Lennon's "lost weekend" in 1975 and The Doors and Led Zeppelin spent time there during the hedonistic 70's. In the 1980's "On The Rox" became a hangout for Charlie Sheen, Robert Deniro and Jack Nicholson and hosted parties arranged by "Hollywood Madam" Heidi Fleiss. It's also infamous as the club where John Belushi partied before fatally OD'ing.

The club was completely revamped in 2003 and recently, "On The Rox" has hosted private DJ nights as well as after-parties following big shows downstairs; drawing in Hollywood blondes like Jessica Simpson. On a Tuesday night not long ago, Kings of Leon were spotted heading upstairs to rock out with the Mooney Suzuki after their Roxy show.

So, through the side door entrance, up the dark stairway and into the blue neon lit lair, equipped with two stripper poles and adorned with an extensive collection of artist performance photos and you're there. "On the Rox" really is a legendary hide-out!

So, yeah I really can't wait to perform in California!

4 Lane Demo

Friday, the 4th of July.  I am a bit of a guitar geek so I decided to check out the big sale at the local Guitar Center and at least pick up some new strings for my Martin D16R which was sorely in need of a fresh set.  I was also on the lookout for a smaller, cheaper guitar to have handy when a fresh idea appeared.  I always feel a little protective of the D16 since it was my first decent acoustic and I wanted something else I could bang around a bit and not worry so much about.

The week before I had seen a Taylor "Big Baby" that seemed to fit the bill and I was happy to see that it was in fact on sale at a nice price, but decided to see if there was anything else available in the same price range before committing.  I tried several others but nothing matched the sound and playability of the Taylor until by chance I saw a little black guitar off to the side, looking a little neglected and unwanted.  When I picked it up and got a better look, I found it looked more like a toy guitar with "Felix the Cat" splashed all over it and I had my doubts, but it was a Martin with a solid and inviting feel and the price was right, so I gave it a try.  Felix sang!  For a small guitar the sound was surprisingly clear and full and it almost played itself. 

I was still torn between the "Big Baby" which looked more conventional, and Felix which was hard to take seriously until you picked it up and played it.  Apparently many others had felt the same because they made me an offer I couldn't refuse.  They offered Felix at below cost and about 70% off the original list - almost like getting a kitten free to a good home.  I could no longer resist since the price was now less than half of the sale price of the "Big Baby" and the only drawback was the cartoon image of Felix staring back at me.  Worst case, I figured I could always spray paint over it, but since taking it home and getting better acquainted, I would not change a thing.   Best part was my wife loves Felix and didn't kill me for buying yet another guitar.   My younger son, who is a real guitar player, not a wannabe like me, was also impressed and could not put it down once he tried it. 

Anyway, I decided to give it a little demo on an old chord sequence and simple tune I have had laying around for more than 15 years.  So far I have only one verse for it, but maybe finding Felix will help with that also.
