Having finally followed up on Platters That Matter Records's post of Dr. John's "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" with The Flowerpot Men's cover version, PTMR tells me that Humble Pie did a version of it too. Sure enough, there it is on YouTube, from their Performance - Rockin' the Fillmore album. It's quite a slog; I've put it at the bottom of this entry in case you want to test your willpower. More interesting are the other versions that YouTube turned up, with the best being by Paul Weller--

This was a very painless article for me to write, because I am, as you have probably guessed, I am a Blondie fan. I already had several of their albums, some greatest hits/compilations, and was especially looking forward to check out the 30^th Anniversary Edition of Parallel Lines. I already had the original 1978 album (which I bought when they reissued it with some bonus tracks), so I already knew all the songs on the Anniversary Edition.

Blondie - Hanging On The Telephone

For those that don't have Parallel Lines and their biggest hit, possibly best-known song, "Heart of Glass" is on this album. Other big hits for them includes, "Hanging on the Telephone" - which I previously mentioned was a cover of The Beat.

Revisiting the album, I realized just how good "Picture This" is:All I want is a room with a view/A sight worth seeing, a vision of you/I will give you my finest hour, the one I spent watching you shower. Although I think this is a great song, it never made it on singles format in the US (although it was the leading single in the UK).

I suppose, it's to be expected because the US was still really into disco (which would explain why "Heart of Glass" did so well), but the UK was more progressive in their music taste (which would explain why they love the Carribean-beat song of "Sunday Girl").

The album ends with "Just Go Away", with its hard-to-get lyrics: "Don't go away sad/Don't go pre-fab/Don't go be bad/Don't go away mad, just go away. JUST GO AWAY!"

That's just the perfect album! The special extra bonus are four songs: "Heart of Glass (7" single version)", "Sunday Girl (French Version"), "Hanging on the Telephone [Nosebleed Handbag Remix]" and "Fade Away and Radiate [108 BPM Remix]".

Between the four song, I especially liked the French version of "Sunday Girl", a song that sounds refreshingly new because I have never heard this particular version. Apparently the song appeared as either an A-Side or B-Side on the "Sunday Girl" 7" that was released in the UK.

The other extra songs, I am guessing is rare. I didn't really care so much for them, as the 7" version of "Heart of Glass" sounds pretty much like the album mix.... while the techno/trance version of "Fade Away and Radiate" sounds nothing like the album version. Talk about extreme end of the spectrum.

There is also a bonus DVD that comes with Parallel Lines: 30^th Anniversary Edition. The videos are for promo videos for "Picture This", "Hanging On The Telephone", and "Heart Of Glass", with one previously unreleased Top of the Pops performance of "Sunday Girl". Debbie Harry looked incredibly cool on TOTP, despite badly lip-syncing. I love all the videos, particularly the disco video for "Heart of Glass". My only complaint is that it's only four videos, you'll go through them in no time. Still, it is a nice bonus.

You can pick up Blondie's Parallel Lines: 30^th Anniversary Edition at any retail location. If you have never own this album, the 30th Anniversary version is definitely the superior version to get. If you already have the LP, why not upgrade?

They are currently wrapping up their tour dates for promotion of this album... and I hope they come back touring, as I think the last time they were on tour was in 2003 for "The Curse of Blondie".

Virginia Plain on Big Train

British sketch comedy is one of the mainstays of Veneer family entertainment. The Fast Show, Little Britain, Monkey Trousers--all very amusing. This week we've been watching Big Train, which may be the best of them all. Tonight we watched the final episode of the first season (1999). In the final scene it's 1976, and Chairman Mao is on his deathbed. He flatlines, only to jump back up and sing Roxy Music's "Virginia Plain"--

I used to watch all of these after school and also the Saturday morning show, Krofft Superstars(?)...Wasn't there also one that involved Bigfoot and some kid?

Lately, Stefan and I have been on a 70s rewind... in case some of you haven't noticed. The "bad" influence of our new favorite TV show, Swingtown (Thursdays, 10pm EST, CBS), has made us look for other ways of remembering the 1970s in all its glory - good and bad. The 70s had a distinctive sound, look, feeling, and angst. It was a time when people woke up and realized they weren't who they thought they were and therapy was born (and died) as were whispy bangs, disco, polyester, theatrical porn, and self-indulgence. It was the adolescence of our culture in a weird way. Over the next few weeks Stefan and I will be revisiting a few things unique to the 1970s that will either amuse or recoil you. So Enjoy!

Land Of The Lost

Today's memory is from that 1974 - 1976 Saturday morning TV series from Sid and Marty Croft, Land of the Lost. I would literally clap and giggle evilly to myself (well nothing has really changed there has it?) when the villains of this show came on screen giving us their distinctive hiss. I'm talking about the Sleestaks people!

Sleestaks and The Marshalls

Those forerunners of the 1978 Battlestar Galatica Cylons would shuffle and zombie walk their way on screen chasing the sickeningly sweet Marshall Family and their hairy caveman boy Cha-Ka. (I swear the Sleestak vibe was on its way back with Project Runway Season 2 contestant Zulema Griffin, who wore the largest sunglasses emulating the Sleestak look!). But the Sleestaks and all their corny nature won me over and now I still giggle when I see an image or sound that reminds me of them. Will Farrell is preparing a parody version of the TV series, so you know it will be ruining the camp nature of the original. So here is a blast to the past! Enjoy this trip down memory lane! Hisssssssss!!!

Roller Skating Songs

What were your favorite Roller Disco Songs of the 70s?

The 6th Grade Serenade question got to me, because as I stated before in more than one prior post, I am 1978.

In the 6th grade, the thing to do was go to the movies and the Roller Rink, so we did.

I remember begging my mom to let me go see the movie ROLLER BOOGIE at the theater.

I thought that was the end all of the coolness spectrum - a movie about roller skating - I was in heaven. A year or two ago, I found Roller Boogie online at movieflix.com (sorry, the site down as of posting time and you have to join with a paid membership, and at the time I had one so I watched it and it was still a good movie even if a bit dated). This morning, I found a really great fan site dedicated to the movie, Roller Boogie - check it out!

I always loved roller skating songs ever since I was a kid. Melanie's Brand New Key comes to mind. Dire Straits, Skateaway. Peaches and Herb's Roller Skatin' Mate. The Roller Boogie theme by Bob Etsy. And of course, Cher's Hell on Wheels.

Throwback Thursday: Melanie

For some reason, this tune was stuck in my head yesterday. Maybe there's a tiny bit of me fixated on Cheyenne Jackson's wondorous thighs from The Tony Awards. Maybe it was mind's way of keeping from breaking down over the fact with what I'm paying for gas I could put a kid through college. Maybe it was my mind's way of telling I have other transportation option. With size 18 feet, I didn't think rollerskates were one of them. However Ms X discovered that they are indeed an option. I can have a pair made using my own shoes. I wonder if they can trick out my Uggs mules.

I think I mentioned this before, but walking in them feels like I traipsing around on the backs of little lambs. So I can only imagine how divine gliding around on their remarkably strong backs would feel.
