The Front (Win Garano series #2) 2008

Patricia Cornwell's "The Front" is the second in a series featuring thirty-four year old Massachusetts state homicide investigator Win (Gernimo) Garano. Win's nemesis is egocentric and obnoxious Middlesex County District Attorney Monique Lamont. She relishes every opportunity to manipulate and humiliate Win, in spite of the fact that he once saved her life. Lamont comes up with a preposterous project for Win, as part of a public relations ploy "to take back our neighborhoods" and "to create a model that will be studied everywhere." Garano's task is to unearth information on an unsolved sexual homicide that took place in 1962: A blind British citizen named Janie Brolin was raped and strangled in Watertown, Massachusetts. Could she have been the Boston strangler's first victim? Win resents Lamont for expecting him to reopen a forty-five year old case. To make matters worse, Lamont has invited New Scotland Yard's Detective Superintendent to get involved. Lamont further suggests that Win enlist the aid of a Watertown cop nicknamed Stump (her nickname is unrelated to the fact that she has worn a prosthesis since her leg was amputated below the knee). Stump wants no part of the Brolin case, and she tells Win to do his own dirty work for Lamont. It seems that Lamont and Stump detest one another and Stump has not found it in her heart to forgive Monique for her past transgressions. Stump also fears that Monique wants to destroy a growing coalition called FRONT (Friends, Resources, Officers Networking Together), consisting of sixty police departments cooperating and pooling their resources. Stump urges Win to find a way to get out from under Lamont's thumb. This book is irritating in so many ways: Cornwell's artificial use of the present tense is grating. The loosely constructed plot is lame and nonsensical. The story wanders down different paths that never fully converge, and none of the characters are satisfactorily developed. As in the first novel of the series, "At Risk," Win is devoted to his eccentric Nana, the charming and superstitious psychic who raised him. Stump is a hard-bitten and tough cop who may have secret feelings for Win. In spite of her efforts to make him angry, Win is turned on by Stump's mind and physical beauty. Unfortunately, Cornwell does not establish a believable relationship between these two. They constantly exchange insults and juvenile banter, like a pair of squabbling siblings. In addition, a story line that has Lamont under suspicion for aiding terrorists is nothing short of outlandish. Adding to the absurdity, Win experiences a brainstorm that enables him to solve the Brolin case as if by magic. It is almost as if he has inherited Nana's second sight. "The Front" is a weak effort by Cornwell; it is insubstantial, lacks cohesion and pace, and never picks up enough steam to hold the reader's interest.

Read 8/12/08 Ages 10+ Winnie is 13, finally! There are Bobbi Brown makeovers and boy drama with good old Lars, the hand-holder from 'Twelve.' But we've moved beyond hand holding to TONGUE KISSING! (which Winnie experiences for the first time.) Also her 7 year old brother has a 'bagina' and it is called a penis. STILL HILARIOUS AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.

Read 8/6/08 The last book in the series; one that I never read in high school. Sita travels back in time psychically to stop the threat that comes at the end of the age Kali Yuga, then travels back further to put herself to rest. Interesting conclusion.

Read 7/31/08 So the story is that I loved these books in high school (I had to check the copyright dates to assert that, yes, it was indeed high school that I read these - I hadn't really abandoned all teen lit for the sci-fi section and homoerotic bildungsromans) and found volumes 2-5 for a quarter apiece at the Brown Elephant, the A-ville thrift store. They are as adventure packed as I remembered, although ridiculously implausible and filled with deus ex machina. Even more filled with religious undertones than I remembered - hell, they're overtones! No wonder I decided to minor in religion in college. An escapist goodie.

Privileged Information (Dr. Alan Gregory series #1)

(This is #1 in the Dr. Alan Gregory series. It is both interesting and entertaining. The main character is caught in his own ethics, and he comes up with amusing and stupid ways to get around them. A good read. I'll be reading #2 at some other point). A psychological thriller that poses an ethical dilemma. According to police reports, one of psychologist Alan Gregory's patients has committed suicide. A few weeks later the local paper prints information from an anonymous source alleging that sexual misconduct occurred in the deceased's therapy sessions. Gregory's patients cancel appointments, unexplained terrorism randomly occurs, and two more of his female patients die--one in a car accident and another from strangulation. Because of ``privileged information,'' Gregory feels he cannot divulge information about these women, and thus clear his reputation. He begins his own quest to unravel the mystery that is destroying him. It doesn't take long to zero in on the probable suspect. The real question is how these deaths and acts of terror are related and why Gregory is the target.

(This is Robert Crais' first attempt at a novel, way back in 1992, and you can see the beginnings of a very entertaining author who goes on to continue the Elvis Cole series as well as publishing stand-alone novels. This first book is definately a little rough around the edges, as compared to his later writings, but he certainly was on his way and worth another chance at a second novel in the series.) When quiet Ellen Lang enters Elvis Cole's Disney-Deco office, she's lost something very valuable - her husband and her young son. The case seems simple enough, but Elvis isn't thrilled. Neither is his enigmatic partner and firepower Joe Pike. Elvis Cole--the sensitive and wisecracking collector of Disneyana--and his heavy-artillery partner, Joe Pike, traipse through the seamier streets of Los Angeles, infiltrate high-society Hollywood, and cross the line with the Latino drug trade in search of an errant husband and a missing boy. The adventure and the characters of this novel are exciting and totally satisfying. Their search down the seamy side of Hollywood's studio lots and sculptured lawns soon leads them deep into a nasty netherworld of drugs and sex - and murder. Now the case is getting interesting, but it's also turned ugly. Because everybody, from cops to starlets to crooks, has declared war on Ellen and Elvis.

Troubleshooter (U.S. Marshal Tim Rackley Series #3)

(Although the story is written in excellent form, I found this particular novel to be more violent then the first two in the Tim Rackley series, as well as the other stand-alone novels he has written. Other than that, I'm waiting for #4 in the series because the recurring characters are written so well). U.S. Marshal Tim Rackley, nicknamed "Troubleshooter" because he's usually in trouble and he shoots a lot of people, is back on the job after breaking up a mind-control cult in his second Hurwitz outing, The Program. Biker gang the Laughing Sinners kills a couple of Rackley's friends while busting them out of U.S. Marshal custody, then go on a rampage and massacre 37 of their rivals in preparation for a drug deal involving a powerful new form of liquid heroin called "Allah's Tears." Readers will feel a lurch of unease early on when informed that Rackley's deputy sheriff wife, Dray, is eight month's pregnant. Rackley is still suffering from the loss (in The Kill Clause) of his daughter, Ginny, so when Dray tangles with the gang he comes close to losing it and screwing up the case. Hurwitz is a rock-solid writer, researcher and plotter, and readers will find him in top form putting Rackley through his procedural paces as he slowly closes in on and shuts down the spectacularly evil Laughing Sinners.

Hunting the Hunter (On the Run, Book 6)

Ages 8+ Some gun violence rounds out the series, which remains as action packed (and implausible) as the previous installments. The kids are still slightly maddening in their singleminded devotion that repeatedly strains the meaning of "justice." The ending satisfies, as Meg and Aiden finally accomplish their goal. Despite its flaws, the series will definitely appeal to fourth through seventh graders.
