4.0 stars. YA. I'm sort of reluctant to give this book 4 stars because the ending was such a cheat--after 558 pages! The teens on the cover is so misleading. All the staff has a problem with it especially because the plot point of the book is that teens just disappear, poof!, when they turn 15 and the teens on the cover look like 17-19. Also, the characters act and think in ways your typical 13 and 14-year-olds would not. So between the cover and the character actions the reader keeps forgetting these are middle-school kids (and the whole point is that they're middle-school!) That aside, I just knew I would recommend this book (especially to reluctant readers regardless of page length) because it's so action packed and really keeps your interest but the ending was so sucky I don't know. Lest you think this is just my opinion the entire staff had the same opinion point-for-point. This stuff might not bother his target audience though. I'd love to get their point of view.

Found (Missing)

When Jonah and his neighbor, Chip, both adopted, begin receiving mysterious letters with a threatening tone - "You Are One of the Missing" and "Beware! They're Coming Back to Get You" - they begin to investigate where the letters come from and realize that they are part of a 13-year long mystery involving the FBI and time travel. "Found" gets off to a slow start, but when the pace picks up it's a quick read through the end. A fun read that will leave readers tingling for sequels that are sure to follow.

Read 8/3/08 Confession: I did not read every story in this book. Like any collection, the stories in this vary in quality. Thumbs up to Gaiman's "Orange" and "The Star Surgeon's Apprentice" (which stuck in my head long after reading.) Meh to Cory Doctorow - even though I liked your novel, I couldn't get into the agenda of Anda's Game. Only for the science fiction fan.

Read 7/10/08 Positively gripping sci-fi adventure that will appeal to those who enjoyed The City of Ember. Don't read the first without the second close by, as the ending is akin to a season-ending cliffhanger.

read 5/22/07 gripping and fast, a great start to a new series. "How did they know I was adopted - when I didn't even know?" Chip asked, his voice breaking. He bent his head down over the mail again. "missing doesn't necessarily mean 'adopted'" Jonah argued. "Or maybe there's some list in the school office of which kids are adopted, and somebody hacked into the computer system, and they think it's really funny to..." He stopped because chip didn't seem to be listening anymore. Chip's face had suddenly gone deathly pale. Slowly, he held up three letters, all of them plain envelopes without return addresses. All of them were addressed to Chip, two of the letters had yellow forwarding labels. One of the labels was peeled back a little, and Jonah could see the words "Winnetka, Illinois" below. Winnetka was where chip used to live. "You open them," Chip said. "I can't." Jonah took a deep breath and took the letters from Chip. He ripped them open quickly, the same way he took off bandaids. "You are one of the missing" he read from the first letter." Then, "Beware! They're coming back to get you." And the next one, again, "Beware, they're coming back to get you."
