Read 10/4/08 A very interesting and sophisticated book. Good for ex religion minors, virgin Mary obsessives, folks who have recently read Choke (but without all the sex addiction). Engaging/enjoyable/for folks who like to think about things like Gnostic Christianity and natural plants/poisons. Another possible companion: Buried by MacCready?

Read 8/6/08 The last book in the series; one that I never read in high school. Sita travels back in time psychically to stop the threat that comes at the end of the age Kali Yuga, then travels back further to put herself to rest. Interesting conclusion.

Read 7/31/08 So the story is that I loved these books in high school (I had to check the copyright dates to assert that, yes, it was indeed high school that I read these - I hadn't really abandoned all teen lit for the sci-fi section and homoerotic bildungsromans) and found volumes 2-5 for a quarter apiece at the Brown Elephant, the A-ville thrift store. They are as adventure packed as I remembered, although ridiculously implausible and filled with deus ex machina. Even more filled with religious undertones than I remembered - hell, they're overtones! No wonder I decided to minor in religion in college. An escapist goodie.

Read 7/28/08 (Ages 11+ - abuse) 14 year old Agnes has grown up in Mount Blessing, a community of 260 "Believers." Since her 12th birthday, she has been devoted to becoming a Saint - down to following the penances that historical saints followed, such as wearing a string tightly around her waist and fasting. Her friend, rebellious orphan Honey, no longer seems to have use for the strict life of Mount Blessing. The chapters alternate between the points of view of these two girls. Disappointingly, the strong ideology of the Believers didn't seem to be reflected in the narrative. (One glaring example: because Emmanuel was to be viewed as father to all, the children lived collectively in nurseries from ages 6 mos to 7 years - yet Agnes and Benny still called their parents "Mom" and "Dad"?) Despite a world that wasn't fully realized, an okay read that improved in the second half.
