Read 8/12/08 Ages 10+ Winnie is 13, finally! There are Bobbi Brown makeovers and boy drama with good old Lars, the hand-holder from 'Twelve.' But we've moved beyond hand holding to TONGUE KISSING! (which Winnie experiences for the first time.) Also her 7 year old brother has a 'bagina' and it is called a penis. STILL HILARIOUS AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.

It's Not Fair!

5 stars. Ages 4-8. One of my favorite picture book author/illustrators is Tom Lichtenheld. I've laughed til I've cried at his stuff. And I've enjoyed Rosenthal's humor (especially Little Hoot). The two of them together are great. Even the end papers (maybe especially the end papers)--in true Lichtenheld style--are hysterical. Absolutely identifiable for anyone who's ever had a sibling. Don't miss Rosenthal's dedication in the back.

Mary Had a Little Lamp

5 stars. Ages 4-8. This update of the classic rhyme is hilarious. Mary's bendy-necked lamp follows her to school and a variety of places. The ending cracked me up. Because of the vocabulary it would go over the heads of 2 and 3 year olds.

The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things

Read 8/2/08 (Ages 13+ for scenes of heavy petting, some language, date rape) Slightly dated to the early 00's (Ani love! Eyebrow rings! Purple hair!). V. readable story of HS sophomore fat girl Virginia as she struggles with her friend's departure, her non-relationship with Froggy IV (Fat Girl Rule: go farther than non fat girls), her parent's desire for her to slim down, and the reveal that her gorgeous older brother has date raped a girl. Issue novel much? But it's deftly handled and doesn't seem too "issue-y" and Virginia's voice is defined and strong.

Twenty-six Princesses

4.5 stars. I love funny and this wonderful alphabet book fills the bill. 26 princesses head to the palace to "Meet the Prince--Today Only." The rhyming text introduces us to each princess like Princess Ruth whose mithing a tooth. The frogs in each illustration are a complete hoot. Wonderful fun.

Falling For Rapunzel

4.5 stars. Rhyming text tells a slightly different version of this tale. Rapunzel is so high up in the tower she cannot quite make out what the poor prince tries to tell her. Very funny mix-ups occur. Did this as a read-aloud for my preschoolers. A big hit with them and all the adults in the room.

Read 6/19/08 (ARC) Author of the well received (by me) book "The Sex Lives of Cannibals" is back and this time he is wandering around China. Awesome! Says Ann. And awesome it is. Compare and contrast with American Shaolin, which featured China in the 80s. Less helpful advice and more anecdotal pleasures, including much rumination on eating ruminants and other beasties. (Om nom nom yak!)
