Read 7/2/08 Follows the lives of three citizens of Owl, North Dakota - HSer Mitch, new teacher Julia, and old timer Horace - building up to the blizzard of February 1984. Klosterman is annoying but he writes a good turn of phrase. Angry faces that the book wasn't really ABOUT anything, but it did entertain.
Read 6/26/08 An engaging story of zombie apocalypse, despite the production values of an ARC (misspellings, homonym confusion) and literary quality of fanfiction. But v. believable as an unscholared military dude's journal. Good for fans of zombipocalypses, I Am Legend, etc. Note: Apparently a 2nd edition has been issued by an independent press that hopefully eliminates the typographical errors in the first edition. The cover is a lot better, too.
Read 6/23/08 (typo-ridden ARC) Bridget Jones' Diary meets She's All That in a fluffy quick read. Loosely drawn from the Oscar Wilde play "The Importance of Being Earnest." Good for English Litty types.
Read 6/19/08 (ARC) Author of the well received (by me) book "The Sex Lives of Cannibals" is back and this time he is wandering around China. Awesome! Says Ann. And awesome it is. Compare and contrast with American Shaolin, which featured China in the 80s. Less helpful advice and more anecdotal pleasures, including much rumination on eating ruminants and other beasties. (Om nom nom yak!)

Read 5/20/08 Very high thumbs up! Prone to making you laugh out loud in public spaces, such as Metra trains and work lunchrooms. The kind of approachable science text that I love. Plus, walrus penis bones as Inuit war clubs!

Read 4/20/08 Though it can be repetitive when it comes to technical explanations of the physiology of death (all the better to only reproduce one chapter and still understand!), this is all in all an interesting book that will appeal to both those interested in forensics, and the history of forensics, and those who like true crime stories. After reading, I want to become one of the thousands who donates her body to the Body Farm - under explicit instructions that the experiment done on my body is that it's mummified in the trunk of a car, of course.
Read 4/11/08 Vampire apocalypse from fifty years ago, now made into a film. Short (170 pages) and fast, an interesting novella of a read.
3/27/08 A fast paced poolside read that took little thought to ingest and which I will probably forget about in the near future - the perfect vacation book. (Pair with a recent viewing of the film "Ratatouille" for an interesting look at the food service industry)
