Read 7/22/08 Ages 11+ (a kiss, some tramplings) In the fictional kingdom of Tyralt, someone is attempting to assassinate the headstrong Crown Princess, Aurelia. Robert, the son of the former court spy, is recalled from the frontier lands to investigate. The romance is light to none and the mystery is bland. However, there are a few scenes of horsemanship that intrigue, and the independent spirit of Aurelia - who is quite the People's Princess - makes her an engaging character. Only for fans of the courtly drama genre.

Read 7/11/08 My least favorite Maureen Johnson to date. Banter and writing is snappy, romance is meh, most characters (except for Mrs. Amberson) don't seem fully fleshed out. Still, a fun light read.

H.I.V.E.: Higher Institute of Villainous Education (Hive)

Ages 10+ (less than a handful of instances of CW level profanity - "hell", "damn", "bitching") For fans of Artemis Fowl and Austin Powers. Brilliant white haired 13 year old Otto is kidnapped from the orphanage that he's essentially been running for the past four years. He winds up helicoptered to H.I.V.E. - the higher institute of villainous education - a boarding school for the budding Dr. Evils of the world. Of course, his first course of action is to figure out how he can escape. A bit derivative of recent popular works (Neville - erm, I mean NIGEL is a timid side character with a love for herbology - erm, I mean, biogenetics - and starts his own Little Shop of Horrors!)

Downtown Owl: A Novel

Read 7/2/08 Follows the lives of three citizens of Owl, North Dakota - HSer Mitch, new teacher Julia, and old timer Horace - building up to the blizzard of February 1984. Klosterman is annoying but he writes a good turn of phrase. Angry faces that the book wasn't really ABOUT anything, but it did entertain.

Night Road

Read 6/30/08 Ages 13+ (violence, some language and prostitutes) Cole is a heme - short for "hemevore." His skin goes from zero to scalding in the sun, he's eternally 18, and his diet is mainly human blood. After years as a bit of a drifter, he's called back to NYC and the Building - the heme's home base. At first, he thinks it has to do with the Tragic Reminder of the Past that lives on the fifth floor, but no - he's been called upon to usher Gordon the Accident (a brand new heme) into the lifestyle. Begrudgingly, Cole accepts this task, and along with Sandor (the comic relief/Gordon's creator), embarks on a strange road trip, feeding and reminiscing. These hemes aren't bad, but they're not sparkly Cullens either. A good read for dudes, horror fans, and people who enjoyed the similarly off-kilter vampire tale "Peeps."

Girl at Sea

Read 6/27/08 Clio is set to have the perfect summer: she's just landed a job at the art supply store where her crush works and she's determined that this will be the summer that she finally gets kissed. Then her dad wrecks all her plans. Soon, she's adrift on a luxury yacht, sailing around Italy with her dad and her dad's new girlfriend (ick), the girlfriend's daughter (the impossibly cool milkmaid goddess, Elsa) and an irritating Yale-student research assistant (whose name I am tragically forgetting at the moment). She's cut off from email and phone, convinced that arty crush Ollie will totally forget about her. Worst of all, her dad won't even tell her what they're doing at sea - and there is definitely something mysterious going on. Of course, action and romantic entanglements ensue. Entertaining summer reading.

Day by Day Armageddon (A Zombie Novel)

Read 6/26/08 An engaging story of zombie apocalypse, despite the production values of an ARC (misspellings, homonym confusion) and literary quality of fanfiction. But v. believable as an unscholared military dude's journal. Good for fans of zombipocalypses, I Am Legend, etc. Note: Apparently a 2nd edition has been issued by an independent press that hopefully eliminates the typographical errors in the first edition. The cover is a lot better, too.

Oggie Cooder #1 (Oggie Cooder)

Oggie Cooder is class outcast with is funny looking clothes, and odd habits until the popular TV show, Hidden Talents, discovers his cheese charving talent and attempts to make him into the next superstar. Cartoonish in quality, where the good guys are good and the bad guys are bad. 1 part Frindle, 2 parts Fudge, Oggie Cooder is a worthy read that will keep you giggling and rooting for Oggie till the very end.
