The Obama administration wants American teachers to be better at their jobs. They're going about accomplishing that goal in a somewhat roundabout way: new regulations on the colleges and other programs that educate teachers.
President Obama announced Friday that he's asking the Education Department to propose those regulations sometime this summer. Those regulations would probably tie a small amount of federal financial aid to the quality of teacher preparation programs.
The administration is promoting this effort as a way to "put a great teacher in every classroom." But it's also about hurrying up a long-stalled, complicated bureaucratic effort to incorporate students' test scores in judging not just teachers, but teacher training programs. What the administration ends up doing could eventually affect not just classroom teachers or schools of education, but all colleges.
The Education Department is still working on new regulations for teacher education programs. But here's what we know about what they want to do.
