Hillary Clinton had a great many criticisms of Donald Trump during her Democratic convention speech Thursday. She called him hateful and divisive. She said he had no actual policy plans. She bashed him for stiffing his contractors, and for not making his products in America.
But perhaps her most damning criticism of all was a riff on Trump’s temperament, in which she suggested that he was a "little" man "moved by fear and pride" who could end up starting a war.
"A man you can bait with a tweet," Clinton said, "is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons."
Here’s the full section of the speech:
So just ask yourself: Do you really think Donald Trump have the temperament to be Commander-in-Chief?
Donald Trump can't even handle the rough-and-tumble of a presidential campaign.
He loses his cool at the slightest provocation. When he's gotten a tough question from a reporter. When he's challenged in a debate. When he sees a protestor at a rally.
Imagine, if you dare, imagine — imagine him in the Oval Office facing a real crisis. A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons.
I can't put it any better than Jackie Kennedy did after the Cuban Missile Crisis. She said that what worried President Kennedy during that very dangerous time was that a war might be started – not by big men with self-control and restraint, but by little men – the ones moved by fear and pride.
This criticism of Trump has been coming up more and more often lately. Stephen Hayes, a conservative writer for the Weekly Standard, wrote earlier this week that Trump was "crazy" and "not of sound mind." And former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, an independent, said at the convention that we need to "elect a sane, competent person."
